I'm sorry, now we bring up philosophy after people striked it down? Why not forget this talk about abrahamic faiths in this discussion, it's so boring and long-winded.
IMO religion came because people wanted to understand the world around them btw, has anyone else seen The Invention of Lying? it gives a pretty plausible explanation of how religion came to be
Not only the world around them. But within them too. yes, I'll stop posting now.
Intelligent beings, as humans, have an urge to find out where we come from, who we are etc. Religion is basically something that has been created in order to explain the unexplainable.
religion was probably invented so people can have something to lean on rest of their lives, its for people who are afraid of life. starting wars and fucking up humanity.
Religion develops as a response to problems in society. For example, near the end of the classical era when nomadic invasions and diseases were rampant, religion quickly spread.
religion was probably invented so people can have something to lean on rest of their lives, its for people who are afraid of life. starting wars and fucking up humanity.
I don't think people are afraid of life. Death, yes.
I think humans have just been genetically programmed to believe in a higher power. When people were more simple minded religion was such a big thing. Now that we have a little more reason and knowledge of our universe, we are questioning the existence of such a being. Not to say religious people are dumb. I think todays religion has a direct correlation to child rearing. Someone with atheist parents will most likely grow up to be atheist. If someone is religious then there is a 99.9% chance their parents are religious in some way. And they most likely learned it from their parents and so on. My belief is that in the next couple of hundred years religion will slowly die out.
The only reason Religion has lasted this far is because parents have been forcing it on their children for ages.
That and that it brings people comfort that there's life beyond death and that their loved ones will be with them forever. This is very powerful as it helps hide the grief of the death of a loved one which can be devastating. on top of that it's easy knowledge really, all you need to do is read the bible to claim to know God and that appeals to the laziness in people
There's no point being hateful to each of your ancestors. Tradition is tradition, and as long as they were happy, who gives a shit.
It exists for many reasons..
Like?
Like money.
morales. [editline]22nd December 2011[/editline] do we need more religion threads
If religion didn't exist, then Willem Dafoe would never have been Jesus.

Not a good recipe.
An explanation for the things that cannot be conventionally explained by science or proof.
Science defines love as a reaction of the body. Where as religion treats it as an aspect of life as a whole.
Science defines love as a reaction of the body. Where as religion treats it as an aspect of life as a whole.
So does science......
Marriage is a religious thing. There are many reasons why religion exists.
So does science......
.......so does science what?
.......so does science what?
Treats love as an aspect of life as a whole. They need it for psychology.
Also, people need to get it out of their heads that you only live two kinds of lives, "one by science and one by religion". How about take both into account with an open mind and make your own life. [editline]22nd December 2011[/editline]
Treats love as an aspect of life as a whole. They need it for psychology.
I'm still not following. Psychology as it stands is a simplification of people's mindset. Although it's an interesting study, it's a very "one-way" method of approaching life.
morales.
lolno. We have morals because we feel empathy, which we feel because we are social animals. Even before religion came along, most people knew that Killing your own kind = Bad [editline]22nd December 2011[/editline]
[editline]22nd December 2011[/editline] I'm still not following. Although it's an interesting study, it's a very "one-way" method of approaching life.
How is it one way? How exactly does religion look at love in a way science doesn't? If anything it would be the opposite since science actually studies love, its effect on people, the environment and what it actually is and doesn't mean a scientist can't experience it.
Marriage is a religious thing. There are many reasons why religion exists.
It's not like marriage is a stupid concept or anything.

Religion gave people something to do, a lifestyle if you wish that guided them towards morales, ie not stealing etc. [editline]22nd December 2011[/editline]
It's not like marriage is a stupid concept or anything.
It isnt. How is marriage a bad concept. If it was nobody would marry eachother.
most people knew that Killing your own kind = Bad
Please. Using simplistic crap isn't adding any depth to the discussion. I think a good look into ancient mythologies is what we need to do. Religions built from an original idea, it has indeed been bastardised over the last many generations. But the history is quite inspired.
Lol no. Religion gave people something to do, a lifestyle if you wish that guided them towards morales, ie not stealing etc.
Look at animals. They don't have religion, yet most don't needlessly hurt each other. That argument is just stupid, moral can and did exist without religion. And having a lifestyle forced on you is an incredibly bad thing. [editline]22nd December 2011[/editline]
Please. Using simplistic crap isn't adding any depth to the discussion.
