Vintersorgs earlier albums, ödemarkens son and hedniskhjärtad qualifies as melodic black metal to me. But his later work is VERY avant-garde. Also check out the precursor to Vintersorg; Otyg.
I didn't say they were melodic death or black metal. I said they have melodies in their music and they take influence from melodeath. That doesn't mean I think they are melodeath, but that they have elements of it in their music. You can't define the genre of most metal bands goddamn it, opinion affects it way too much. They all make music they like, and I was suggesting something to this guy that I think he might enjoy based on what his preferences were.
I can define the genre of metal bands. It's not very difficult. I never said you thought they were any of those things. Did you read my post? I said they didn't take influence from melodeath, but got influence from the same play melodeath got "melo" from. Pop vocals. That's obvious. Why would they take "melody" from melodeath when "melody" has always been around? Yes they have elements of it in their music, but they didn't take it from melodeath. Besides, melodeath and metalcore showed up around the exact same time.
Okay, my post says it was posted 40 minutes ago, and here we goooo Note that this list is a WIP. I update it every time I finish typing up a band's presentation. First up on the list is Dark Age Dark Age - Minus Exitus (In my opinion, their best song to date, followed closely by "Black September" and "Outside the Inside," with "Devote Yourself to Nothing" close behind) Dark Age - Outside the Inside (If you like demonic-sounding phrases followed by a soaring clean chorus, then you'll love this song) Dark Age - Devote Yourself to Nothing (A change of pace; this is from their newer, 2010 album Acedia. If you like more dynamics, both vocally and instrumentally, then give this song a whirl. Okay, that's it for Dark Age. Up next is Gardenian Gardenian - Selfproclaimed Messiah (The intro track to their last released album before splitting, this song is a good showcase of Gardenian: an introduction that goes from acoustic to pounding, clean vocals (some that are even Autotuned! And done right!), and harsh vocals.) Gardenian - The Suffering Probably their catchiest song to date. The cleans in the chorus aren't the best ever, but they're a nice contrast. The effects on his harsh vocals though more than make up for what the cleans may lack. I would definitely give this song a listen, too! Gardenian - If Tomorrow is Gone From their earlier album, Soulburner, this song is a great contrast of cleans [first repeat of lyrics] to harshes [second repeat of lyrics]. This is probably the best example of both, thrown right by one another.) Gardenian are awesome, but another great band are Ukrainians Infinite Tales. They do it a little different, with the cleans being female clean vocals, but her voice is amazing! Infinite Tales - Amoxicillin...Extermination (The first Infinite Tales song I listened to, this is a pretty accurate showcase of both the male's harshes [which could be better] and her amazing cleans [which COULDN'T be better].) Infinite Tales - Wings (Another great representation of Kiwi's amazing vocals [the female], and the contrast made with the male's vocals) Infinite Tales - No War For This Century (A change of pace from the rest of the album, this song is predominantly a Kiwi-dominated dirge, with the male vocalist jumping in at parts for added emphasis on the message of the story to the song.)
I know about Dark Age and Gardenian, but I've only heard Dark Age's second album (which felt like it was going down the mainstream road maybe?). I'm digging the sound of the first album though, and I had no idea Gardenian had so many albums. I've only listened to Two Feet Stand. Ironically, my favorite song from that death metal album is an acoustic track named "The Silent Fall". Infinite Tales sounds good, but I'm not a huge fan of female vocals. [editline]01:36PM[/editline]
Also, I'm not really sure if it's what you're looking for but Insomnium's latest album uses clean vocals in some of the songs. They're also absolutely incredible. JUST LISTEN TO THAT FUCKING GUITAR, STRAIGHT AWAY GOD FUCKING DAMN
I know about Insomnium, but I haven't heard that album and that song is fucking amazing. [editline]01:44PM[/editline]
Have some Nevermore. Moonrise This Godless Endeavor The Heart Collector
Well holy shit, they sound epic. "The Heart Collector" has been taken down from Youtube, but between "Moonrise" and "This Godless Endeavor", I'm liking Moonrise the most (though both songs are great). [editline]01:48PM[/editline]
it makes me sad that in a thread about death metal 2 shitty metalcore bands are mentioned before opeth. anyway here is some opeth with clean vocals.
I've known about Opeth, but I never gave them a chance. What a fool I was. [editline]01:56PM[/editline]
I didn't say they were melodic death or black metal. [editline]02:09PM[/editline]
Everything by Circle of Ouroborus Nearly everything by Alcest Wolves In The Throne Room - A Looming Resonance (this upload is fairly low quality)
All of those sound great. Circle of Ouroborus has a very interesting sound. [editline]02:46PM[/editline]
Ftw. I didn't know their new album was up on youtube. Sweet. If you like Nevermore, you'll like Dark Empire. Also, does it matter if it's Melodeath or black metal specifically? It seems like lots of people are just posting any metal with clean vocals haha. (Although some of it is crappy pop metal core type singing practically.) Dark Empire In Mourning Novembers Doom (They have some really heavy songs and some really calm songs, and he has a wide range of vocals. Amazing band.) Swallow the Sun Before the Dawn (Great band) Katatonia Amorphis (Best fucking band ever. No seriously. Best band ever.) (Their older albums are a bit heavier if you want that.) Nile (Will often have some cleaner vocals on their songs, but mainly just the chorus and that's it, if you don't mind his vocals the rest of the time they're a great band.)
Awesome post. All of those bands are amazing. I already knew about Amorphis, Nile, and Before the Dawn. My favorite out of all of those would have to be the song by Katatonia.
Anaal Nathrakh is really good stuff Black Metal with clean vocals: Emperor and Dimmu Borgir
What is the definition of clean vocals in these songs, cause most of what I listened to was all still raaaaaaaaaauuuuughhhhhhhh I do like the instrumentals though, mainly in opeth and insomnium.
The first song from the above is so awesome

And Insomnium use mainly growls although in their new album, there are clean vocals in some songs, and clean whispering in every album. Scar Symmetry use a lot of clean vocals, and he has a beautiful voice for clean. More clean vocals than death actually, or roughly the same anyway.

Maybe it's just because it was a low bit rate.
Whoa, I left Facepunch for a day or two and the thread exploded. I am now going to listen to all of this. [editline]04:26PM[/editline] That sounds great. Thanks. :) [editline]04:37PM[/editline] I know about Children of Bodom, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, and Raintime, but I have never before heard Disarmonia Mundi. They sound good (and a lot like Soilwork), but I didn't hear any clean vocals in that song. If you like keyboard, listen to Mercenary. They're a really good combination of melodic/thrash/power/progressive/death metal. Thanks for the share. Mercenary - My World is Ending
THANK YOU someone else like Mercenary !
also cynic has clean vocals and they're awesome
I know there are no clean vocals, but I couldn't skip sharing this amazing melodic black metal band I just discovered. Strigampire - The Enemy Inside
While they don't like to be referred to as black metal, try Forefather. There's black influences in there and they mix clean and harsh vocal styles:
I forgot about Cobalt
Well, Opeth mixes clear vocals with growling, and is pretty good at it too. That's everything that comes into my mind.
Oh right, I was going to add more bands to this thread. Okay, well, I'm on limited time here, and super slow Internet, so I'll just list the bands out here, and then if I have time (probably when I get home in three hours) I'll add some sample songs to listen to. I already did Dark Age, Infinite Tales, and Gardenian, so... As Memory Dies Blind Stare Code for Silence Divinity (kinda sorta) In Grief (more progressive death than melodic, but they fit here still) Instant Suppression myGRAIN NahemaH (A mix of melodic death metal and post metal; very cool) Universum If you just wanted melodic death metal, I'd be able to help you out a lot more. :v:
Thanks for those bands. Here is a melodic death metal band I found with clean vocals. Blood-Stained - Scars of Loss
When you say clean vocals do you mean basicly singing or screaming?
