I'm horribly scared of the dark- How do I overcome this?

I am still afraid of the dark as well. The two ways I deal with it are I try to act as though I am not afraid of the dark. By acting calm I can fool myself into thinking I am calm. I also try to deny that it's dark and I picture my house as it would look if the lights were on.
I'm going to tell you the truth: The dark scares me. Well, not really the "dark" but whatever could be in there. This is recent, as I don't have any memories of being scared of the dark as a kid. I think this surfaced when I moved into a new house, an old-style mansion with lots of life-size statues and creepy paintings, with shadows lurking everywhere.
Nothing really scares me, but the dark, oh my god, I can't walk for five seconds before beginning a sprint, and before I know it, I am already pushing my body to top speed. I can stand most gory/scary movies without closing my eyes, but I cant be in the dark without whispering to myself "nothing's there, nothing's there".
You are surely thinking "Why don't you just stay in your room, where you are the most comfortable?" The answer is: My dad. Dad's a lazy bastard and he loves to eat apples at night, and the kitchen is downstairs. Our maid always turns off the lights really early, so almost every night I have to run down there and get the damn apples from the basket- there are many baskets so I usually have to spend a minute looking for the right one. After these trips, it is not common to hear my dad saying " Wow boy, you are pale like a ghost. See anything interesting downstairs?"
How do I overcome this fear? Flashlights don't work because I think whatever is there will creep behind me- I feel powerless at this, and sometimes I even get angry!
Any tips facepunch? or perhaps has anyone had an experience like this?
Get a girlfriend and make out in the dark next to your scary statues.
This is strange, but I learned to befriend whatever you are scared of. That is the best way to destroy your enemies. Do anything spiritual, place offerings, tell the darkness that you are its ally. Once you do that, you have nothing to be scared of. Whatever happens, the darkness will protect you. It is your house. You will always have the home-field advantage, no matter what.
A life without things in the dark is uninteresting.

Isn't that what 99% of the kids in those horror movies do before they get chopped up?
I'm can walk around in the dark for hours and be fine, but as soon as I hear a sudden noise I fucking BOLT.
Sounds like a plot from a bad movie, like Casper, or that one nickolodeon werewolf movie.
I like to believe there are horrible things out there, looking to eat me, and I'm just unbelievably lucky that they haven't yet.
I am not afraid of pitch black dark, but I am afraid of shadows if there is a little bit of light.

Doing that is one step away from the cultists who start sacrificing humans in order to befriend what they're scared of.
Amnesia seriously removed my scaredness of the dark, more because you either nut up or shut up going into the dark, or you think of the darkness as a protective cloak against any damn monster thats trying to rip your head off.
Go into your closet at night with all the lights off, close the door and scream at the top of your lungs "COME AND GET ME BITCHES!"

This is good advice. After I saw a horror movie when I was little, I kept thinking there was this giant formless thing standing right next to my bed. As soon as I imagined that it was there to protect me, I stopped being afraid instantly.
kill yourself
You have a maid ?
Please post pic of house

But then his poor lazy father will have no one to fetch him apples. :frown:

Hey, fight fire with fire. If you are afraid of imaginary things killing you, make up imaginary things that defend you.
So does anyone feel their senses heighten while in the darkness? I usually hear better while I'm up at my computer at night.
Honestly when I used to be afraid of the dark I just said fuck it if something attacks me whatever. Basically a COME AT ME BRO sorta thing. worked for me thus op should man up and gro some balls
-insert racist joke here-
Not really, racism is bad. BAD.
Learn this, and there will be no place for the darkness to hide.

But seriously I know where you're coming from, its pretty much something that mentally haunts you, maybe from movies or games of some sort.
If there's one thing that helps me(to a certain extent) is to admit your life is absolute shit, nothing fantastic, exciting, or out of this world will happen in it.
That's basically just it.
Psychotherapy.

Next time you stare at one of your paintings in the darkness it will turn into that.
That would be so awesome.
I have the same problem dood. :C If you figure out how to overcome it, tell me, kay?
I'd ask your parents, or just keep a flashlight nearby and every time you think there's something turn it on.
Nothing is going to be there, and you can investigate the noise. Leave the flash light on for an hour a day, and it'll die. At this point you should be at one with your room, know the noises of your house, and realize nothing is there.
Next time you feel scared, start screaming at the darkness.
Imagine it's a dark, cold, cloudy night. No shred of light at all. Your biological nightvision kicks in but you can barely see anything. Your dad's in his room munching on an apple sitting and relaxing watching porn and shit. When all of a sudden, a high pitched
"FUCK YOU DARKNESS, I WILL FUCK YOU!"
Coming from the hallway on the other side of the house.

Yeah its because you lose the advantage of vision so the rest of your senses make up for it.
Start sleeping with the lights off, it helps.
Wait.. if the maid turns the lights off.. why can't you just turn them back on? Do big houses not have lightswitches?
Don't fight the dark, let the dark consume you
become the dark
