What if the Earth's rotation was knocked on it's side by a solar flare? A novel idea.

You know about Logan's run? You could use the darkness to equal the euthanasia at the 21st birthday, like in Logan's Run.
Maybe since the world has become overpopulated in the north, the societies exile and cut off people from the (dome / society) and put them into the dark wastes.
The character is exiled and seeks refuge in the southern cities (or domes, i just like the dome idea). The southern domes are all messed up, some without heat, light, water amenities for example, or you could go with the fallout-esque idea of the social experiments in the southern domes, each giving weird circumstances and crazy messed up inhabitants.
Sounds epic to me?
we get fucked up
2012 is the most scariest shit ever
but if we would all die there what the fuck we would do
It'd be like mercury.
You could probably work in a few ham fisted metaphors with the light/dark dichotomy. Literary critics gobble that up like gold dust.

The book I want to write would focus on the story of a man from Sunside who is looking for his wife who is trapped on the Darkside. Either that, or a person trying to get from Darkside to Sunside, unaware of how terrible the sun really can be...

Don't just do one, alternate the chapters between them. Try to intertwine the stories. I really think that would be a better idea.
South pole would get alot of direct sunlight, causing lots of ice to melt and flood the land.
And day and night would become really messed up, everyone would loose their sleep patterns, get cranky and kill each other
I think we've established that.

Yeah, I think it's a good but tough idea, I was only laughing because it's also an incredibly simple yet elegant one. If I focused hard on the socioeconomic aspects, and get a more "social science fiction" (as Asimov would've called it) going on, it'd be great to see the results.

Also isn't Roadside Picnic the book Stalker was based on was the movie S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was based on?
Yes.
Second Impact.
... was the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread.
It's story is based on October 1st, 2007, when the earth's axis tilted, and all the creatures became mutated.
Was such an awesome game for it's time.
Sounds like a good idea. Looks like I'm not the only one who studied literature.
I would do some more research on Solar Flares. I kind of stopped reading at the "the flare could have some sort of EMP effect"
Do some research on your subject please, and then continue.
and have you ever heard of a Gamma Ray Burst?
inb4 2012
If I'm right, in 2012 the Earth will align with the center of the galaxy. Big woop.
if this did happen, and it happened like you said it, the book would only be like 100 pages long, unless you go into a lot of detail and have most of it take place before it happens.
also no matter how powerful the solar flare was (unless it used a large amount of the suns energy causing other bad things to happen) it would not tilt the earth.
Earth be sad and cry tears of melting polar ice.
Yeah, I know. Any thoughts?
If the moon went drastically out of orbit somehow, maybe the gravitational forces would sway the Earth into a different facing...
An asteroid crashing into the planet would definitely fuck with the orbit, but humanity would still have to be sufficiently alive somehow. An asteroid smashing into the moon, perhaps? You'd end up with a rock shower situation as well ala Cowboy Bebop.
Assuming you haven't found a cause yet (haven't read the second page), you could try spinning something around with this idea:
Some military agency has been designing a secret weapon that uses seismic tremors (AKA: earthquake machine) to attack tactical locations. War breaks out over the consequences of overindustrialization (AKA: no space left to expand, worsening economy and standard of living) between said nation, a nation on the other side of Earth, and several other nations. The two biggest players are the earthquake machine nation and the nation opposite it, however.
After all attempts at diplomacy have been shot down and the threat of nuclear holocaust sits on the horizon, the EM nation decides that their secret weapon will be used for the first time, aimed at some key element in the opposing nation's military or economy. The weapon is fired with great success, crippling the opposing nation and cowing its zealous allies. Mutually Assured Destruction through nuclear arms slowly retreats.
However, after some period of time, it's discovered that the usage of the seismic generator device somehow affected the Earth's core (slowing it down, speeding it up, reversing its direction, maybe changing its direction to make the axis change?). You fill in the rest.
...
If you don't take that idea, I will. :v:
Great idea for a novel, interesting thread to read. I've not been too big on sci-fi literature but stuff like this would be facinating to read I think, assuming your characters have an ounce of depth to them so that they will really shine in this unquie setting/situation they are in.
Story kinda reminds me of that one episode of Stargate SG-1, where they transport to a world where one side is always in the dark (full of nomadic feral beasts) and the other is always in the light (full of a high proper ancient society).

They made a movie called "The Core" based around the idea of a seismic weapon stopping the Earth's core. Already done, in other words.
I remember reading something about the galactic plane of the milky way, and a small section along the center of the plane where, because of the spinning of our central black hole, the effects of gravity are slightly different (stronger/weaker?) and so our solar system passing from top to bottom through that plane would change things up a bit, or something like that, my memory is very vague on this.
If not, and this is not scientificaly accurate at all, how about the LHC creates a strangelet, which accumulates mass. as it does it is pulled towarrds towards the sun due to some other force, lets call it a 'strange' force, before ripping through the earth and plummeting into the sun where it is broken up again by nucular fusion/fission whatever. As it pushed through the earth though, it exerted enough force to knock it sideways. as it was a minute particle however, it did very little damage, and so little is physicaly changed on the earth.
Blah its late.
not going to lie i would buy this book.

Bleh, now this is just delving into science and chance way above our heads, and the goal of the story's. I'll just leave it ambiguous in the book, although if anyone has a shot at explaining it, then go ahead. Like I said, I'm more interested in the ends than the means, but this kind of speculation is fun :v:

Did you read my post?

that would be a Hot topic in the news.

No, I did, but that idea can already be found in the movie "The Core". It's a good idea, but I like the idea of the catastrophe being ambiguous more.
It's like how Douglas Adams chose the number "42". It was just a random number to him, but some kooks with too much time on their hands found decent explanations. If I play my cards right it won't seem to matter, and people can fill in the blanks for themselves.
Once again, I say that pulling the ambiguity off would be possible if I make the characters deep, I make the situation engaging, and I provide less focus on the incident and instead on how people are treating it.
It would be and epic novel.

I remember that movie.
I thought the idea was familiar. Been too long since I've seen it. :rolleye:
Now, don't you have a novel to write? :v:

Will do :v:
I might post excerpts in Creationism, just to see how people are liking my direction. Thanks, guys, your ideas have sent me on a literary spiral that'll make this story great.
In the meantime, how about you guys check out my other project, a children's book?
No.
