2009 wasn't shitty for music. Here's a list of awesome albums that came out in 2009 from my collection:

Kreator's Hordes of Chaos
Dark Age's Acedia
Scar Symmetry's Dark Matter Dimensions
Paradise Lost's Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us
Deus Ex Machina's I, Human
Instant Suppression's Domain.Nation
Fractal Gate's Altered State of Consciousness
Dark Age's Acedia
The Fading's In Sin We'll Find Salvation
DevilDriver's Pray for Villains

Candlemass's Death Magic Doom
In fact, a good portion of my metal library includes 2009 releases. :v:
Oh shit, I completely forgot about Hordes of Chaos and Descent Into Depravity. I haven't heard a majority of those other ones, though I shall put Nile's, TBDM's, and Amorphous's new releases on my "to listen" list.

Doesn't surprise me that you haven't heard most of them.
I wonder how you people find your metal bands. Am I honestly the only one who goes to Encyclopaedia Metallum's advanced search, puts in a genre and a lyrical theme, sets the shows to "full albums only," hits search, and goes through the results and see what's good?
I also forgot fucking Carving Out the Eyes of God and Monoliths & Dimensions. Great albums as well.
I don't know. I find out about my Metal through YouTube a lot, friends, torrents, and related artists. There's a certain intangible aspect to a lot Metal that's coming out nowadays that I can't explain but I don't like... I find it really hard to explain.

Like I just can't get into Opeth and I don't know why. Everyone I know loves them.
Muse-Origin of Semetry
Muse-Absalution
Muse-Resistance
Radiohead-Hail to the Thife
Radiohead-OK Computer
Radiohead-KidA
Radiohead-Amnisiac
Muse-Showbiz
Gorillaz-Demon Days
Eliot Smith-XO
SoaD's self-titled came out in '98.

You have two Parkway Drive albums in your top ten of the past decade. I believe you should shhh about Cannibal Corpse.
Hm, with songs like "Entrails ripped from a virgin's cunt" I think that they're doing better than Cannibal Corpse are
and I'm not saying that they're the best albums released in the last decade, like OP said it's personal opinion
I'll go by albums (alphabetical order, not in order of favorite to least favorite):
- Avenged Sevenfold: Avenged Sevenfold
- Avenged Sevenfold: City of Evil
- Between the Buried and Me: Alaska
- Between the Buried and Me: The Great Misdirect
- The Black Dahlia Murder: Nocturnal
- Divine Heresy: Bringer of Plagues
- Dream Theater: Systematic Chaos
- Metallica: Death Magnetic
- Nile: Ithyphallic
- Pinkly Smooth: Unfortunate Snort

Like I just can't get into Opeth and I don't know why. Everyone I know loves them.
Hmm, maybe it's because they break away from the traditional mold of death metal? :raise:
That's the only thing I can really see in Opeth. If you gave me more examples, I could try and draw more lines between them - maybe we can isolate what you don't care for. It's a shame, too, because a lot of stuff coming out these years is really quite great - Fractal Gates's "The Eclipse," for example, is simply orgasmic - both in the sound and the lyrics. Same goes for Instant Suppression's "Inner Entropy." :v:
There's a joke about Opeth, how they're so boring that even their fans pretend to like them.
I never could get into Opeth, at least not into their newer stull like Blackwater Park and Damnation. I thought Watershed was alright though.

I admit their acoustic stuff gets boring after a while - but then, that's a lot of what made Opeth so big.
Mikael Akerfeldt has an amazing growl, though. Songs like "Heir Apparent," "The Locust Eater," and "Deliverance," showcase them very well.

Besides, I find Opeth more of a band centered around the lyrics as opposed to the music. It's quite obvious the lyrics took a while to write.
In my opinion, the only people who say Opeth are boring are the people who never bothered to listen to even half an album that wasn't Damnation. I'd suggest Deliverance as a good album to start with for Opeth.
Still, different strokes for different folks. :v:
1. Foo Fighters - ESP&G
2. Foo Fighters - In Your Honor
3. Weezer - Maladroit
4. Weezer - Green album
5. Velvet Revolver - Contraband
6. Seether - Disclaimer II
7. Seether - Karma & Effect
8. Manchester Orchestra - Mean Everything to Nothing
9. Gorillaz - Demon Days
10. Foo Fighters - One by One

I use MA a lot but if I've never thought of searching by lyrical theme, probably because I can't think of a specific theme I'd want to search for

Browsing through their forums is a good way to find bands though

Are you really judging them based on song titles they purposely use to creative negative attention and to piss people off
Alternatively Parkway Drive are arguably doing anything possible to get popular, by going along with the current scene

Speaking of Opeth, they made a new song for that God of War III OST

No order:
Dillinger Escape Plan
Grizzly Bear
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails - The Slip
Nine Inch Nails - Still
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
30 Seconds to ma--- Hahahahaha I'm just kidding
Saul Williams - Amethyst Rock Star
Saul Williams - The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!
Isis - Panopticon
Kasabian - Kasabian
anything by metallica
I know, I know too much NIN but I couldn't keep those albums off this list

No, it's not that. I appreciate experimentation above all else!
Please don't crucify me, but I don't like Akerfeldt's harsh vocals. :x I enjoy his singing voice though. I don't dislike them, but a lot of their material bores me to be completely honest. It's something about the tone of the guitars, and the style... It's hard to explain. Like I said, I don't dislike them, I just can't get really into them.

Okay, have fun with your commercialized Brocore. :byewhore:
Bro-core?
I'm curious. If I started a death metal band and wrote about nothing but toothbrushes and dental health, would my band get stuck into a "toothcore" genre? Maybe Dentalcore?
Brocore.

Tell me that's not Brocore.

I will buy every one of your released CDs.
Fifty times over.
I want some fucking toothcore. That'd be fucking AMAZING.

The band list their lyrical themes as "dentists and gore"
commercialized
all music is commercialized
Well not all. I know a couple of artists who have given their music out for free.
Well not all. I know a couple of artists who have given their music out for free.
you could make the argument that it is commercial as long as they want to gain something from it
Over-commercialized, I should say. Thanks.
you could make the argument that it is commercial as long as they want to gain something from it
Publicity is all they really have to gain.

I agree, I'll admit that it takes some listening to get into Opeth, but IMO they are one of the greatest bands of the age.
They're so talented with so many different kinds of music and Akerfeldt has such a versatile voice that he can backup whatever the band wants to play, because they're all multi talented enough to try anything.
However some songs are so boring, they take so long to get anywhere so it isn't for everyone.
I'll always love Opeth, they've always got something new to offer and the lyrics are incredible.
They're great musicans and I hope one day I'll be able to see them

I'm seeing them in 12 days :smug:
But anyway, I agree. Opeth is one of those bands where if you can get into them, it's a really special hidden gem that you know you may never find again.
Akerfeldt is an incredibly innovative musician.
Oh fuck you, I want to see them
They came to Australia, every capital city apart from my own.
An Tasmania, but nobody ever goes there

Audioslave - Audioslave (they had a good thing going, and that was their best!)
Radiohead - In Rainbows (I liked it better than Kid A)
System of a Down - Toxicity (you don't have to like them, but this is where they were best)
Dream Theater - Octavarium/Six Degrees (can't decide, they are both too complete and good)
Caspa & Rusko - FabricLive.37 (DUBSTEP! Yes, it basically paved the way for the better dubstep out now.)
Muse - Origin of Symmetry (Can't forget muse, my favorite album is Black Holes and Revelations, but Origin of Symmetry is a lot better)
Gorillaz - Gorillaz (running out of choices, but this is definitely a pick)
Meshuggah - ObZen (good album, and again running out a ideas)
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (Good album, I liked all the songs)
Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny (had to add it, may get boring after a while, but definitely a pick)
I spent too much time on this, probably crappy, list. O well
