[QUOTE=Teh_Cheese;15932175]If anyone is up for a big challenge, how about the prototype Horten Ho 229?

(yes, it is a real plane)[/QUOTE]
I'm up for it.
[QUOTE=tarkata14;15932287]I'm up for it.[/QUOTE]
Very cool, can't wait for the end result.
[QUOTE=Teh_Cheese;15932328]Very cool, can't wait for the end result.[/QUOTE]
Any rules/restrictions?
[QUOTE=tarkata14;15932385]Any rules/restrictions?[/QUOTE]
Uhmm, The texture has to be nazi-ish, cause it was built for them, and you don't need the landing gear, unless you want a bigger challenge.
Oh, and the size on wikipedia? that was the prototype's size, not the real one ;)
the real one wasn't completed, therefor never seen.
and it was going to be about the size of a Boeing 747
I'm guessing a helicopter wouldn't cut it in this competition would it?
[QUOTE=Ajacks;15932913]I'm guessing a helicopter wouldn't cut it in this competition would it?[/QUOTE]
Go ahead I'll remove size shit.
I overthought this.

There you go guiz I fixed everything to make it really lenient. Teh Cheese's post would be an epic plane to model. :buddy:
I'm came in here all excited at a the thought of a fp modelling contest, but was confronted by an OP who is quite obviously very inexperienced.
I.E. You're rules are absolutely terrible.
I'm still going to make something, but your rules can go fuck themselves.
You can now model the specs in the wikipedia article, thanks DOG-GY. :D

[*]NO POS MODELING PACKAGES [B]ok[/B]
[*]One entry per person, don't use alts to post more content. That would be stupid. [B]alright[/B]
[*]No 2 second shit, take this seriously or it will never take off. [B]k[/B]
[*]Must be your own work [B]uhhh, kinda a given[/B]
[*]Must be no greater than 10,000 poly's [B]ehhh... Don't really like polycount limits myself but whatever[/B]
[*]Must be submitted by July the 22. 2 weeks should be plenty of time. [B]k[/B]
[*]Must be based off of a real life aircraft that follows these guidelines: [B]k, there's your first real problem; if we want to make something original, we should be able to[/B]
[list=a]
[*]Does not have to open any cargo bay, does not need an interior, does not need to have any physical doors (meaning that you may use textures for doors). [B]another idiotic rule[/B]
[*]Don't be a smartass and post a ufo or something stupid like that. [B]wtf? "Oh noes, someone made a non conventional aircraft"[/B]
[*]Can be a spacecraft if you must, but preferably something that doesn't leave the earth. [B]What the hell is with these rules[/B]
[/list]
[*]Because this is a low poly competition you should texture your plane. It's not required, but it's worth it. Trust me. [b]this isn't a rule, it's a suggestion. And a weird one at that since people are going to vote for textured things anyways[/B]
[*]Texture limitations:
[list=a]
[*]5 materials for the whole scene allowed (This means that 1 material can contain 1 of each of the texture maps below). [B]ok, now this is just turning into absolute bullshit[/B]
[*]Diffuse, spec, opacity, env, bump, and normal maps are allowed. [B]you are telling us what texture maps we can use?![/B]
[*]Must be textures you've done yourself. [B]This is just slightly off, seeing how there's nothing wrong with finding good textures for your models, but I'll let this pass[/B]
[*]Do not use anything inside your 3d modeling package for texturing, what-so-ever [B]only elitist noobs have a problem with people using the tech they have to their advantage[/B]
[/list]
[*]No turbosmooth, meshsmooth, or anything of the sort to make your model look smoother. Do not use any kind of built in optimization feature to lower poly count either. [b]once again, a good modeler uses all the tools at his disposal[/B]
[/list]
Rendering your final, beautiful creation
Renders should be no larger than 640 x 480 in size. [B]You can't be serious[/B] [img]http://d2k5.com/sa_emots/emot-aaaaa.gif[/img]
The background should be a solid GRAYSCALE colour or transparent and should not blend with the model in any way. [B]wat[/B]
Please don't have anything except the airplane in the scene. [B]ok[/B]
[/quote]
That's what I think of your rules.

[QUOTE=DOG-GY;15933748]If you read the damn thread, after I got feedback I modified the rules. Plus, don't even think about calling me fucking inexperienced. I've worked with Max for 4 years and I have a job as a 3d modeler and animator. If you read the thread, you would realize the reason behind my rules: I wanted people to have a go at stylistic low-poly modeling. If you knew any background information about me, which you could have learned from posts. You would have known I already know how to model. If you read the OP, you would realize I knew terms that are telltale signs that I know what I'm talking about.
So don't call me ignorant in this field when you didn't even bother to read. "Your rules can go fuck themselves" har har har.[/QUOTE]
All I'm saying is that you're rules make you sound inexperienced. Maybe I'm wrong.
But I'm intrigued, please post something you've made.

After those examples... I find this hard to believe.
And is it just a coincidence that when someone goes "OH LAWD YOU DON'T KNOW JACKSHIT!" everyone replies with the same, god damned generic : "I WORK AS (insert here) OMG I KNOW EVERYTHING!".
I'm not saying you're not a 3D modeler and animator...(I'm taking a gamble here) I just mean you're bad at it.
Edit - Also, I know you're a "purist" and what not, and love low poly... But at least work on the smoothing groups/normals/whatever you call it these days. The first car looks more like a Photoshop mock-up than anything else.

What's bad about those examples? Point out flaws, please. My employer was very happy with the Ramblin' Wreck. If you'd like to bitch about detail: it's being integrated into Second Life, so I have to take into account everyone's hardware. I made it as low poly as possible. They are using SL in conjunction with a program called F3 to bring education as well as GTRI as a business into the SL world. I work there, my dad works there. I work down the hall from him. I'm pretty sure the massive amounts of info I just gave proves I'm not bullshitting. I do most of my work there. Most of my posts on FP are made FROM MY OFFICE SPACE.

Please, quote tag that wall of text. And I would appreciate if you could quit flaming me.
As for the second part, not too bad, I mean nothing amazing or anything, the car is not too shabby, considering the polycount, but I have to ask, are you planning on working as a modeler like a decade ago? Because low poly is nice and all, but it's pretty useless, especially [I]this[/I] low poly.
Also, I have to call bullshit. I live in georgia and I don't see how Georgia tech could be employing you. What sounds more likely is you are attending georgia tech as a student.
stop bitching

Read above to see my reasoning. I have to take into account people's shit hardware. Low poly is fun for me. Although I'm going to be learning more high poly techniques soon. Most of my work is base around the polygon limits on consoles, and I barely have anything to show as of now because my work is spread out between 3 computers.
[QUOTE=DOG-GY;15934221]What's bad about those examples? Point out flaws, please.[/QUOTE]
I just did. Read the edit line.
Also, being pissy about everything and anything won't get you anywhere.
Edit - Smoothing groups/Normals BARELY have a negative impact on hardware, if at all.

Are you responding to me or him?
And this! Is why we (mostly) don't have good things here in FP's C.C.
Look how a simple competition turned into [b][u]RAEG[/u][/b]. (Myself included in the bitch/whine/moan, of course)

I'm talking to the guy, I stopped bitching about the rules a while ago.
[QUOTE=DOG-GY;15934317]Second Life doesn't have the best engine and like I said I have to take into account all of peoples hardware. Low poly is not useless in any way.
I'm not flaming you at all. I'm responding with thought, though I'm [B]fairly angry because you refused to listen.[/B] Also, how could I be attending as a student when I'm not out of high school? I assure you I work there. My email address is [email]ryan.evans@gtri.gatech.edu[/email]. No I don't care that I just gave that away either. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to sleep. I have to get up at 6:20 and I'm probably going to be reading till 1.[/QUOTE]
Me: "Heh, I think x"
You: "Well fuck you asshole"
Me: "No need to get angry"
You: "I'm angry because you didn't listen to me"
And as for you being a 4 year Max veteran that does commercial contracts, do you think I was born yesterday? You are (at best) doing the equivalent of intern work at your dads workplace, which somehow includes making simple models for second life. You aren't even out of highschool. And you know what? There's nothing wrong with that. No one here is going to disrespect you because you aren't a a hotshot game developer, we are all learning.
Anyway, this whole thing turned into an absolute derailment, so I'll stop expanding this thread with our argument.
