• Is Latin useful in life?

Had Latin for four years. Shit sucked.
There's alot of English and Spanish words that often derive from Latin, but the majority for English is German. Latin does help to an extent, learning Latin makes learning Spanish easier, 'Nosotros' (Spanish) is derived from the Latin word, 'Nostrum'. If you come across English words that you don't understand, you could dissect it and try to pull stems that may have derived from Latin.
Had Latin for two years. Don't remember a single thing and I still live.
It would be helpful in general life.. But so would any other language. I dont think the time taken to learn it would be worth it. Try learning some language from asia or something (they trade a lot with euro countries).
You won't really learn to speak it unless you put some real effort into studying it, so no impressing ladies I'm afraid
If I was any less shit at languages than I am now I would love to do Latin. It would be a great compliment to writing and understanding English (and getting into the one-in-a-million hot nerd chick's pants as it sounds very romantic). But if you're good at languages and it's somewhat relevant to whatever else you're doing I'd say do it.
As someone who has studied latin, I can say that it helps you throughout advanced conversations, science, and history.
I'm fluent and Latin doesn't impress girls. It does however, get good scholarships and make it INCREDIBLY easier to pick up a 3rd or 4th language.
It's called a dead language for a reason
You won't really learn to speak it unless you put some real effort into studying it, so no impressing ladies I'm afraid
Yeah, all you do is reading because there's no point to speaking anymore. Your teacher may speak to you occasionally, but there are never any oral exams like in Spanish, French, German, etc.
Impressing ladies? Who are you dating? A librarian?
I guess you could write a poem nobody would understand in Latin, but if you're going for ladies, learn French.
It makes it easier to learn other languages that are based on Latin.
If you go back in time or something you will regret not learning Latin. (It also depends how far back you go though.
Do you also plan on joining the Catholic Church?
I've got a Latin qualification. It's useful in certain situations, but it's not a romantic language. It's main use is in science, medical or agricultural fields.
I hate the "Veni Vidi Vici" tattoo, so generic and goddamn is it ugly.
So you want to do like this. "Evening Ladies, you want to come in my room and futuere with me?" :v:
I highly recommend Latin. Of course it's a dead language so you aren't going to be translating for anybody or speaking to native speakers, but it's really useful for vocabulary and understanding words. I've only taken a year of Latin so far, but I see derivatives of Latin words in books all the time. (For instance tacit means silent. It comes from the Latin word tacitus). I chose to take it because I had no idea what I was doing in Spanish class. I could read pieces of Spanish text, but if someone started speaking it to me, it was way to fast for me to understand. So I said fuck it, and took Latin. So if you're in a similar predicament, I would highly suggest taking it, and It definitely looks good on your college resume, especially if you do well in the National Latin Exam.
I took two years of Latin, and it really wasn't too bad. I think the whole "learn Latin to learn English" is way overrated. Very rarely do I find a word I don't already know in English and know it because I've taken Latin. I was actually in the predicament that the above poster was in.
Learn french or german Maybe spanish if you live in the south west
I had 4 years of Latin. It is not realy useful in every day's life, but it could come in handy if you study medicin or something.
Learn French. Much more useful, plus it's the language of love baby doll :smug:
It's only useful if your going into medicine or law. Also, compared to the other romance languages it's generally considered the hardest to learn.
I took Latin for a few years in school. Don't know why I did it.
Latin is useful if you want to write the spoken word sections in black metal songs
Latin is only useful if you study medicine or if you like it
You should just memorize large lists of greek and latin roots, not only because it helps advance your understanding of most modern languages, but also helps your memory. You'll be able to learn things faster and remember them longer. When I was 13 I memorized just 350 and it helped out a bunch.
Also German and French is 100% useless in the US, if you're going to spend time in school doing this Spanish is by far the best for careers and whatnot.
I took three years of Latin. I never speak it, but man is it fun to catch teachers when they are like "this comes from the latin word durr which means hurr", or when people post some latin phrase to look cool and I just get to shut them down. I am the only one in my school that took Latin so teachers feel all relaxed about bsing up some Latin since they think nobody knows it. It really helps me learn other languanges like spanish and french. Like if you wanted to learn romance languages, just learn Latin then they come really easily.
