Soilwork are one of the bad supergeneric melodeath bands I don't really like bands like Soilwork because they sound the same as EVERYTHING ELSE
Like Odium and Scar Symmetry, right? Scar Symmetry are awesome Wouldn't call them generic really There's something about their sound that makes them stand out a lot, I find.
so i learnt that one of my friends sisters has awesome taste in music and she showed me this band today They're not really straight out melodeath, more groove/death but I think it fair to call them melodeath as well
Daath are pretty sweet, Emil Werstler is an absolute beast of a guitarist. And he uses a hollowbody :v: [editline]16th October 2010[/editline]
Scar Symmetry are awesome Wouldn't call them generic really There's something about their sound that makes them stand out a lot, I find.
I've always found Scar Symmetry to be more technical than a lot of bands in the melodeath genre, but I don't listen to melodeath all that much
Soilwork are one of the bad supergeneric melodeath bands I don't really like bands like Soilwork because they sound the same as EVERYTHING ELSE
Well they're the only melodeath band I've ever really listened to so I can't agree with that. I like their lyrics a lot and they sound awesome to me. Each of their albums after the first 3 sound a little different from each other. It's subtle but it's there. They came a long way in my opinion.
I came in here to say that Insomnium is the best band ever.
I came in here to say that Insomnium is the best band ever.
I like you. Let's be friends.
Am I the only person who doesn't shamelessly worship Insomnium? I mean yeah, they're definitely top-notch, but I have personally never found them that amazing. To say they're the best ever is a bit pretentious; I'm pretty certain there are quite a few bands vying for that position. Bands like Dark Lunacy and Fractal Gates, just off the top of my head. Well, I may as well as throw some more content our way. Aeveron - Anger Complex Dat bassline. :frogc00l: In Mourning - The Shrouded Divine Think Opeth without the acoustics or clean vocals. Souldrainer - They All Die Honestly, I could throw any song off this album (Reborn) up, and it'd be amazing. The entire album is a Gothic/melodeath masterpiece. Words can't describe them. Just listen to the song and be amazed. :frogc00l: Noumena - Misanthropolis Think I already posted it. I don't care. I'm posting it again. Again, dat bassline (:frogc00l:). The usage of female vocals is pretty neat, too. NahemaH - The Perfect Depth of the Mermaids Doesn't entirely belong here; but then, NahemaH don't entirely belong anywhere. I mean, where would you put a band that mixes progressive metal, melodic death metal, post-rock / post-metal, and jazz? I mean, honestly. I think that's good for now.
Well they're the only melodeath band I've ever really listened to so I can't agree with that. I like their lyrics a lot and they sound awesome to me. I just realised I called soilwork bad They're good but there is such more amazing things in melodeath. [editline]16th October 2010[/editline] also one of the reasons I love Insomnium so much is the fact that they're so unique. The only bands that sound like them are Fractal Gates and Be'lakor, but Insomnium do what they do better. Be'lakor don't really sound a lot like Insomnium but they do a similar thing, just in a different way. Either way all three bands are great.
I think I've enjoyed nearly all the music in this thread. I just think Insomnium sound that little bit better. I worship them shamelessly because they create music that will cheer me up (sounds ironic with how melancholy their music is) whenever I listen to it. Not many bands can do that.
Yeah, I love how you're able to listen to them in a relaxing calming way, as well as a loud and rockin' way. A tough feat to do.
I like you. Let's be friends.
As do i, insomnium rule. i think Dark Tranquillity are the best melodeath band, because they're the pioneers of the Gothenburg sound, but i prefer insomnium in their lyrics and technical work

I'll try this Insomnium out since you say they're so good.
Finnish metal tour is coming to my area march 1st. Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, and Finntroll. Going to be so amazing.
I loved Children of Bodom's first album, then again I had a massive hardon for both Extreme Metal and Power Metal/Speed Metal/Shred Metal and all, my favourite bands at the time were Stratovarius, Sepultura (both still are), Helloween and Death. I recently picked up In Flames first 2 albums, and they're great. But I seem to enjoy the stuff they do thats not actually Melodeth, like Everlost Pt 2 and the Acoustic Medley for Artifacts of the Black Rain. Is it worth going more indepth to this genre?
Really is. In Flames aren't really a great melodeath band, imo. And content: Oblomov, cool ass band. They've got a female and male singer. Male does clean backups, female does lead clean and harsh. Really cool as fuck snaring vocals. They sound so raw. Honestly it sounds like what a big ass fucking dragon would sound like if it could sing. Awesome. And they seem to be very experimental, lots of strange instruments (Well strange use of the keyboard) in it. Works well though, really cool. And Edge of Sanity, one of Dan Swano, a rather unspoken hero's bands. Cool prog/melodeath. They're quite like Opeth in that they blend prog rock into their death metal sound. Dan has fucking SLAYER growls. And because i mentioned him I sort of have to post his solo now. Not only is his music quite like Mikael Akerfeldt's, he even sounds like him :v: [editline]17th October 2010[/editline] And while it's not melodeath (Progressive rock), here's a duo project by Akerfeldt and Swano. Really good. They only made one song, and here it is: Mikael does guitar and vocals, Dan everything else.
"Oh look, my favorite band is on tour! Oh, ok, they are playing 30 shows, in Finland and Germany only.....". -_-

"Maybe I should give Equilibrium a listen. Just to hold me in for a while, and to keep me from bombing Finland. I'd like to see them postpone a retaliation. I hate Finland." :v: [editline]19th October 2010[/editline]
eh its kinda old news, somone posted it on the winterun last.fm page after someone asked yesterday. In my opinion, Dismantling Devotion is one of their best albums, and "Lies That Bind" is one of the best songs on said album. :bravo:, my good sir, :bravo:. Even if I did suggest them God knows how long ago in this thread. :v: [editline]fish[/editline] Well I'll be damned. Just as I finished posting that, MediaMonkey started playing "A Life Less Lived," off, you guessed it, Dismantling Devotion. :v:
holy motherfucking god i just came oh my god mind is blown this is some of the best fucking music I have ever heard. And this was 1994, the very beginning of melodeath. This would have been absolutely and utterly GROUNDBREAKING back then. Listen through it all. 5:20 literally one of the best bits in any music ever It's Edge of Sanity, Dan Swano's band
I came here, wanting to spam Dan Swanö. Saw someone already did it for me, great. Please mention his solowork too. Moontower is possibly my all time favourite album.
posted him up a couple posts yeah, he's awesome. Love his vocals and he really pushed genre boundaries with his work which you gotta always respect. [editline]19th October 2010[/editline] I will now listen through Crimson in its entire 40 minutes of concept-ness 1 song album [editline]19th October 2010[/editline] mikael akerfeldt does some vocals in this :iia:

Revive for mighty Odin
bump w content Centicore, think a non industrial sybreed with growls and more melodic riffing Ashes to Ember. kinda deathcore-y but still awesome. The highs are really damn cool, remind me of TBDM. Also cleans. Feast For The Crows Heathen Foray- folky melodeath Thousand Leaves- Anime melodeath for Touhou :v: Arcoisolium Also Threat Signal, the cleans sound SO LIKE Chester Bennington :v: Divinity, apparently this is melodeath but I wouldn't really say that, sounds more like teutonic thrash :v:
Also Threat Signal, the cleans sound SO LIKE Chester Bennington :v:
I thought the same thing when I first heard them.
Guys I found the new ENsiferum :3: Frosttide, good stuff. Their vocals aren't amazing, too deep and not powerful enough for the style but still good. Sounds like Amorphis' second album quite a bit too.
That is amazing
I wanted to one-up mikeyt and post a shitload of awesome new bands, but to be frank, I haven't had the time to look up new ones. However, in an attempt to explain to a friend how exactly I filter out bands that are even worth further listens, I made a flowchart. Since I've had people ask me in this thread before how I find such good bands, I've decided I'll post the flowchart here. NOTE: This flowchart is NOT for deciding if I want any of a band's albums. This is simply to decide if I should even consider listening to a band past my initial listen (two or three songs).
