Tbh Norther and, to a lesser extent, Children of Bodom are the only bands of that Melodeath style I like. And if they count, then Wintersun but then they're not really any genre other than metal because they're so fucking unique and different in like every way
I prefer listening to melodic melodeath. (clearly not a real genre but I like that term as a separation from above style)
I mean really, stuff like this... I find it almost insulting for them to classed the same as In Flames and the like.

Amazing, amazing band. Seriously. The riffs, the vocals, the deep soulful lyrics, everything about this band is truly pulled straight from the heart.
And some more of the style even though I've posted similar stuff once before

Bands like this are my favourite style. Although it's fucking hard to find bands of the style. A decent amount use the same instrumental style, but the vocals are too high.
Don't listen to the vocals? I listen to melodeath exclusively because of the vocals. Well, vocals and lyrics - those are the two most important things to me in melodeath. Then comes the drumming (the more explosive the better), followed by the punctuality of the riffs. How dynamic the songs are also plays an important role, and is generally the maker/breaker.
I understand that I'm of a rare breed, to listen to melodic death metal in its entirety. One of things I don't understand is how people can oppose multiple vocal styles in melodic death metal, though. Take for example, Odium. People call them a Soilwork clone, but I think they reach depths far beyond anything Soilwork could ever reach - instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically.

I mean, you don't have to go any farther than the first 12 seconds of the song to hear what I mean: An extremely punctual riff over explosive drumming, and then a clean, drawling "You left me here to..." and then a high-pitched, eight-second-long "DIE!!!!"
Odium's usage of extremely powerful and sorrowful clean vocals, growling rasps, and high-pitched shrieks is an ideal example of how melodic death metal should be done, in my opinion - the amount of emotion and power that can be expressed with a single vocal style simply pales in comparison to Odium's three.
But then, again, I know I'm of a rare breed that listens to melodeath for the power of the composition, not just durr-hurr blastbeats.
That is some amazing stuff, I gotta get into melodeath more
And I think you're diminishing your stock metal fan a bit :v:

Have you tried some Gothic Doom/Death? Insomnium are a bit faster, but I think these may be up your alley:
Daylight Dies - A Life Less Lived

Draconian - The Solitude

Unfortunately, that's all the Gothic Doom/Death I have. I'm not a real big fan of the genre.
Just use the Encyclopaedia Metallum, use the advanced search, set the genre to "Doom Death" (or "Gothic Doom Death", but that has a lot less results), set the release to "full-length" (so many bands with only a single crappy demo released, it's not even funny... :geno:), and see what you can find.

I tend to agree with this, but there are some good exceptions to it. Insomnium, Ensiferum and many songs of Eluveitie's use one vocal style to good effect.

The only ones who oppose multiple vocal styles in a genre are the elitist pricks who think that adding clean vocals to metal automatically turns it into metalcore or something.
I enjoyed that Odium song, and I see what you mean about the vocals. I also won't argue with the fact that many people don't actually pay attention to all the elements of the song. In my previous post, that's exactly what I was saying about Wintersun. You have to actively LISTEN to the music rather than just put it on play and start playing a game or doing something else. That's only my opinion of course, but you shouldn't assume that no one else listens to melodeath for more than the blastbeats/heavy riffs or whatever :v:

Obviously, some people do. It's just the vibe I get from places outside this forum (this forum seems to be pretty centric on intensive listening when it comes to the melodeath scene), especially reading reviews of bands posted in Encylopaedia Metallum and other metal review sites.

EM reviews remind me of how much division exists in the metal community. It's depressing, really. :crying:

The only Souldrainer song I really like is "Reborn." The song was in a death metal pack I downloaded for Frets on Fire, and I loved the song so much I looked into the rest of the album. Unfortunately "Reborn" was pretty much the best song of the album.

Personally, I love it. The blind elitism and bashing is a bit unnecessary, but the emphasis on genre division is very useful when looking for bands.
I've said it many times before, and I know a lot of people disagree with me, but I personally feel that the genre of melodic death metal is too big as it is, and needs more division. Far too many styles - it makes finding bands that play an explicit style incredibly difficult and time-consuming.

Actually, I'd agree with that now that I think about it. But yeah I was referring to the constant band-bashing and douchebaggery I see in some of the reviews there.
How exactly would you divide genres up more, though? By adding more labels? If so, then my fantasy of Epic Powerdeath Folk Metal could become a reality :v:

A DARK HALO are a really fucking cool band drawing influence from industrial, electronica, orchestral, and progressive death/melodeath, they only released one album before splitting up. Not officially, but the members have went their separate ways. They're still labelled, and officially the band still exists so there's still hope of a second album, albeit rather unlikely.

Heh, you're the first person I know to call A DARK HALO anything related to death metal, mikeyt. They're most commonly referred to as industrial metal, or industrial groove metal (I call them industrial groove, myself).
Speaking of A DARK HALO, have you ever taken the time to read some reviews? They're absolutely appalling, and rage-inducing.
In fact, to save you the trouble, here are some snippets of two reviews I found.
A Dark Halo is a band playing the good old style of industrial metal that was so popular in the 90s. In other words, it is two dudes sitting with a bunch of synths, computers, and samplers and recording all of the instruments, presumably in a basement or garage somewhere. [...] Sadly, the music on Catalyst is as outdated as the band's recording habits, since it is rather unimaginative and unadventurous stuff that could have been created by a large number of other bands.
We are all familiar with this brand of drab industrial metal - heavy, pounding riffs, distorted vocals, clean, slightly gothy vocals in the refrains and a general cold and synthetic feel to the music. Most of the refrains feature somewhat cheesy keyboard harmonics. Die Krupps, Misery Loves Co. or even Rammstein and Zeromancer have been doing this kind of music, and much better, for years. [...] Most of the songs here follow more or less the same formula and have a similar sound. This makes the album slightly boring, but on the other hand, it is easy to listen to it while doing something else. The best song is saved for last and hits better than the rest with its Fear Factory-like structure.
Catalyst is primarily an album for people who just can't get enough of Zeromancer, Misery Loves Co. or Secret Discovery. I would not really recommend it to anyone who isn't a hardcore fan of this style though.

Summary: A Dark Halo is a band that brings to mind many memories. Memories of the time I drove a horse-drawn carriage with square wheels over a road made of glass that was also covered in screaming cockroaches.
Let me take you back to a time when industrial bands roamed the Earth; now, let me take you back to 2006 where absolutely nothing changed for A Dark Halo. Shamelessly borrowing overused sound effects from 90’s industrial bands, A Dark Halo slithered in with their debut album Catalyst. Boy did they get attention. The Nintendo GameCube video game, ‘WWE Day of Reckoning 2’, featured two of their songs with one of them (‘Burn It All’) being the game’s theme song. A Dark Halo had it all: the attention of two big names (Nintendo and WWE), they were featured in a video game, and anyone who bought the video game would know the band. What could cause a band, with such a promising start, to be virtually unknown in the music scene? Blame the band.
Although A Dark Halo claims to be unique - they are the exact opposite. Everything from the predictable guitar riffs to the mercilessly boring vocals say that this band is nothing special. For every good moment in the album, an equally worse one shatters it into oblivion. Synthesizers that could theoretically be used effectively are instead cheesy, excessive, and unforgivably annoying. Don’t like the synthesizers? No sweat. Dave Lowmiller’s vocals give the album what only a half-brained stooge would want: pathethic, boring, uninspired, emotionless vocals. Listening to ‘Indestructible’ for any extended period of time carries with it the sort of horror one could previously only experience by stepping into a shower and then realizing Cthulhu is already inside.
Everything that A Dark Halo does wrong is thanks to Lowmiller. Don’t like the typical cold atmosphere with typical strings (that many bands do) and horrible synthesizers? Blame Lowmiller. Tired of the kind of vocals that could initiate murderous impulses for the listener? Blame Lowmiller. The decision to keep Lowmiller was an idiot’s move, because the rest of the band does their job. The guitars are decent enough, the screams are decent (if not over-produced), and the drums are solid. If A Dark Halo replaced their singer, and their entire supposedly unique genre, something good might come from this atrocity. As it is, A Dark Halo is still the genre-abusing, forgettable band that no one listens to because no one cares.
I've not. Are they all negative?
Just googled
A Dark Halo is a band playing the good old style of industrial metal that was so popular in the 90s. In other words, it is two dudes sitting with a bunch of synths, computers, and samplers and recording all of the instruments, presumably in a basement or garage somewhere. Interestingly, bands with such minimalistic lineups have become a rarity these days, even within the realms of industrial metal. Sadly, the music on Catalyst is as outdated as the band's recording habits, since it is rather unimaginative and unadventurous stuff that could have been created by a large number of other bands.
With all this said, Catalyst is not an entire failure as an album. Although originality is a problem, the actual songwriting and riffs tend to be fairly memorable and if not groundbreaking, then at least of passable quality. A Dark Halo is also actually quite a heavy and aggressive band as far as this genre is concerned and many of the songs include very metal-sounding drum beats and riffs. This makes the album quite tolerable for a metal fan, especially one who doesn't care much about innovation. Most of the songs here follow more or less the same formula and have a similar sound. This makes the album slightly boring, but on the other hand, it is easy to listen to it while doing something else. The best song is saved for last and hits better than the rest with its Fear Factory-like structure.
