it's a movie about evil rich people keeping cures from cancer and stuff from poor people who live on the dirty world below. It's about as subtle as an airhorn to your balls.
I liked it.
That movie was shit.
Couldn't agree more, I really don't understand why people liked this so much. The writing was just fucking awful and left me with a ton of questions. For example: [sp]-Why did Max even bother going into the radiation room? What did he expect would happen? That he could unjam the door and then walk out? Then he gets locked in and an alarm goes off saying there's a human inside, but of course, not before the radiation is released. -If Kruger and his team had a ship completely decked out with high tech weapons, why did he have so much trouble trying to kill a group of four guys hiding behind some cars? -How did Kruger know Max was in Frey's house? -When Max gives the code to Spider, Spider just looks at the code flying by on the screen and bam, he knows it's the code to "override their whole system". -Kruger's entire face gets blown the fuck off but his brain is somehow still intact -When Jodie Foster's character dies, am I supposed to feel bad for her? Or was it just supposed to be a "shocking" plot twist -Why are there a bunch of aid ships for earth if no one was ever going to send them there?[/sp] It may seem nitpicky, but this kind of stuff just makes it seem like the writers think the audience is retarded.
Couldn't agree more, I really don't understand why people liked this so much. The writing was just fucking awful and left me with a ton of questions.
Well let's look at each question individually. [sp]-Why did Max even bother going into the radiation room? What did he expect would happen? That he could unjam the door and then walk out? Then he gets locked in and an alarm goes off saying there's a human inside, but of course, not before the radiation is released. His boss said he would be fired if he didn't do it. He didn't want to be fired. The alarm didn't go off until after the radiation had begun being released. -If Kruger and his team had a ship completely decked out with high tech weapons, why did he have so much trouble trying to kill a group of four guys hiding behind some cars? This is a valid point. -How did Kruger know Max was in Frey's house? He had the drone footage of Max exiting the house. That's how they found him. -When Max gives the code to Spider, Spider just looks at the code flying by on the screen and bam, he knows it's the code to "override their whole system". It's obvious that Spider is a talented hacker, seeing as he can outfit shuttles with stolen code, hack through Elysium's high security doors and stuff. Not too much of a stretch to know what a reboot program looks like. -Kruger's entire face gets blown the fuck off but his brain is somehow still intact This happens all the time in real life. Why do you think facial reconstruction surgery is a thing if people die every time their face gets injured? -When Jodie Foster's character dies, am I supposed to feel bad for her? Or was it just supposed to be a "shocking" plot twist I agree with you that this was a poor plot decision. -Why are there a bunch of aid ships for earth if no one was ever going to send them there? Elysium has citizens that visit earth, so if an emergency happens, they are going to send medical help to earth.[/sp]
It may seem nitpicky, but this kind of stuff just makes it seem like the writers think the audience is retarded.
Well you obviously didn't think everything through, so there's that.
I like your responses but please never say 'duh' again.
I like your responses but please never say 'duh' again.
Ok, sorry.
holy fuck that was incredible
Now that you all bring it up, yeah the writing did seem very barebones, a lot of unanswered questions and whatnot. The CG, action scenes, and performances by Matt Damon and Sharlto Copley were pretty damn good though.
[sp]When Jodie Foster's character dies, am I supposed to feel bad for her? Or was it just supposed to be a "shocking" plot twist[/sp]
I think I got this one [sp]You're not supposed to feel bad for her. I think the point was she's such a bitch that even when she's dying she refuses to take help from a dirty Earthling[/sp] [editline]10th August 2013[/editline] But I still think the burning question is [sp]what prevented the healing beds from being accessible by all. I would've accepted a simple "blah blah blah they're expensive to upkeep" but they just didn't seem to make an attempt at answering that. Maybe they just wanted to show how douchy the rich people are but that seems lazy in more than one way.[/sp]
Saw movie, dissapointed. [sp]Soo, we got great big Elysium that is soo overprotective that it forgot to put any anti-air rockets for it defence somewhere else then earth...makes sence why Jody Foster's character was willing to die before credits roll, station's defence is shit[/sp]

[sp]Plus, Mr Pres was against shooting people down. Jody Foster was the only one who was that overprotective.[/sp]
That ending was so satisfying.
Watched it today probably the funnest movie I've seen all summer. Just wish [sp] there would have been more robot battles. [/sp]
I saw it yesterday and I have to say it was pretty good. The plot kinda sucked but the visuals / environment / universe in the movie was beyond amazing
I've been thinking and I think I figured out what went wrong with this film. This movie is not bad, but it's not very good either and compared to D9 it's a massive letdown. But there is one thing that happened with Elysium that did not with D9. Focus testing. D9 was never focus tested, however Elysium, with 3x-4x the budget, obviously was. Now there are plenty of movies that have been killed by focus testers and the directors cuts have ended up being insanely much better. That would also explain the 2nd film editor and the crazy ass hectic editing. The re-re-re plays of all the flash backs for dumb people who can't follow the plot and so on. This film just so feels like it's not done by the D9 gang when it was. As a filmmaker and editor myself, I could nitpick this movie to death, but most of my problems with the film would be explained by focus testing this movie to dumb people. Calling it; there will be a Director's Cut Blu-Ray, it won't be the best thing ever, but it will be much, much better than Elysium currently is.
Man, the local multiplex is showing this in their biggest and best auditorium, and I'm looking at fewer than ten other people here. Nice for me, but the theater is totally losing money on this. Beats being banished to the furthest and smallest screen with the shitty loudspeakers, though. Movie was awesome. Yes, there are plenty of unresolved questions/plot holes, but I still enjoyed it more than any other blockbuster this year. The whole "filthy high-tech" look of the movie pushes all the right buttons for me, and the plot (holes and all) moved right along without bogging down too much on any one thing. Happily, they didn't get caught in the "hero tows around a screaming child that ruins every scene" trap. Copley's character was just fucking ridiculous in every single way, and I loved every minute of it. High points: -The fucking ships, dude. -The fucking rail gun, dude. -Exoskeletons, duh. -The 200-year-old AK. -[sp]Face grenade.[/sp] -Kruger 2.0 Low points: -Everything about Jodie Foster. -Can we just ban "sick little kid" as a motive? -No real reasons for withholding advanced technology from Earth except "We're rich douche rockets, so fuck you!" -The action was all really great, too bad we couldn't have steady camera shots.
The space station reminds me of these images I saw in books about the future when I was a kid: [t]http://www.wired.com/images_blogs/photos/uncategorized/2008/06/09/cylindricalinterior_2.jpg[/t] [t]http://tankmagazine.com/media/41144/donald-davis-nasa-space-colony-1.jpg[/t] [t]http://blog.mutewatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/AC75-1086-1.jpg[/t]
Fucking awesome movie, I hate getting over critical on shit in movies (it's fiction anyway I could give fuckall if a plot piece didn't make sense), I just flat out loved it.
Just came from the cinema, the movie kicked ass, it was fresh and original (however way less than District 9). Things I liked: GORE (holy shit fucking finally, I'm so tired of 12+ movie deaths), all the desighs ( excluding healing beds), actors' performance (especially when there's a lot of unknown actors) Things I did not like: too much shaky cam, would've appreciated more fluid panoramic shots, the Kruger's arsenal (does he have a gadget for everything?), healing beds (I mean really? Could've used nano-machines or something) and Jodie Foster (a more developed character instead of "lol shoot em down" wouldn't hurt) [editline]13th August 2013[/editline] Oh I also like how the trailers showed Kruger to be a "silent precise deadly badass" but turned out [sp]he's a total psycho[/sp]
Just watched it. Holy shit Sharlto Copley has to be my favorite actor ever. He's just fantastic and I don't even know why. I feel I wouldn't have enjoyed the film near as much as I did if he wasn't in it. 8/10
Wow don't know what people are complaining about I thought it was pretty great Sure I think D9 is better just because its a bit more subtle and elegant with how it portrays its plot/setting but I still found this to be pretty good. Guess people just expected D9 X2 which this movie obviously wasn't trying to be
Very cool film, a bit plain villains. The visuals were really pretty damn impressive.
Just got back from this. I liked it, but yeah, it's not as good as D9. Pros: Matt Damon was pretty good. Starlto Copely as Kruger was great. Great visuals. Airburst rounds. Kruger's stay of face. Cons: Plot felt really underwhelming. Class war could've been expanded upon. Weird acting from Carlyle. Villains could've been more relevant. To me, this film seems to have been cut and pasted together during post, kinda like Prometheus. Many of the scenes feel either too short and some even feel out of place, as if they took one shot from one part of the film and then put it in a new spot for one reason or another. Dunno if it's true, but hopefully if it is, we'll see a director's cut. [editline]15th August 2013[/editline] [sp]And did anyone else think that the gore in the film was lacking? Sure, we got Kruger getting his face torn off by a grenade, and I feel someone terrible for saying this, but I wish there was more.[/sp]
[sp]And did anyone else think that the gore in the film was lacking? Sure, we got Kruger getting his face torn off by a grenade, and I feel someone terrible for saying this, but I wish there was more.[/sp]
[sp]Well I think there was plenty of stabbings and gore, but the body count was way too small. District 9 had over 70 kills, Elysium felt closer to 10 if you don't count the two shuttles in the beginning.[/sp]
I went into this yesterday knowing absolutely nothing about it. I thought it was okay. One thing that sort of nags me is how I really wanted to see more of Elysium itself. I dunno, I just don't like having potentially fascinating sci-fi settings dangled in front of my nose and not being able to see it all.
I went into it expecting it to be on the same level as district 9 and while I enjoyed it a lot I'm still a bit disappointed. The world, special effects and acting were all fantastic (I couldn't take Krueger seriously because of his accent but I see that as a positive thing) but the story felt lacking Great movie nevertheless

I was kind of hoping for a sequence where Matt Damon just lays waste to everything like the mech sequence in D9. [/sp]
Good movie, but I hated the Gore.
