My vote has to go to a D40 or something from Olympus.
Canons break down too easily...
Agreed, my friend's Rebel just began corrupting every SD card he put into it. He had to sell it.
Are you guys shitting me? I've dropped my EOS 40D on rocks from 6 ft with a heavy lens attached and it still works perfectly.

It may be as tough as a rock (and that's certainly a good thing!) but bad programming, faulty cheap parts, etc. can cause trouble.
Not saying cannon has bad programmers, etc., I've just heard that they tend to break easier than Nikons.
I prefer Canon's menu programming and such over nikkin's, but it all boils down to personal preference, so whatever.

Exactly. There are so many variables that go into which camera outperforms the other. They're both got their strengths and weaknesses.

You're an idiot.
Really are, both camera brands have the same amount of chance to "Break." Just because it has a different brand logo, it doesn't give it some magical shield that will protect it.

I beg to differ. The camera manufacturer may use a design/body material that resists impact more than other brands. Also, don't think that manufacturers don't look for the more cost-effective alternature (perhaps of lesser quality) to make a higher profit. Especially the state of this economy.

Also, you're a Cannon fanboy.
Jeeze Wakka, it's 'Canon' not 'Cannon' ..! damn...
Anyways, don't get a camera based off which will survive a fall. Wear the strap that comes with the camera and this won't be a problem.
Get a D40 is all that I can say.
I have been looking and researching this too a month ago, I wanted a DSLR too.
I got the D40 and I am very happy with it. Only downside, standard lens.. but hey, what do you want for 300 euros. (yes Euros, I am from the Netherlands)
the kind with a cock bult in so you can suck it
