Jasper, I would reccomend taking a look at most popular webcomics. Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Nedroid, VG Cats, Penny Arcade, Super Mega Comics, and many more. Note how all of them have an extremely distinct art style, if the artist(s) drew anything, you would be able to spot it due to the style.
It's also an idea to stick to a tight release pattern. Once or twice a week is good. It will give you time to refine your comic ideas and your fans, once obtained, will know when to expect something. If you update too often you'll likely get a bunch of clusterfucked shite that nobody likes, because you didn't think about it enough, if you almost never update (VG Cats :colbert:) then people won't be inclined to stay up to date.
Manly Guys Doing Manly Things is a perfect example, in my opinion, and one of my favourite webcomics. It updates every monday, and when the author was away, he got some friends to do guest comics, which were also great.
A good friend of mine writes a fan comic on the Nuzlocke (Pokémon challenge run thing) forums in his free time, and sticks to the once-a-week thing perfectly, to the point where he had a comic done, but held it back to keep his track record immaculate. He also does it in his free time, he does it because he enjoys it, not for lods of emone.
Just my £0.02.
Thanks for the heartfelt advice, Shibbey. I'm going to study all those comics.

How much time do you actually spend on sites like this? Before making a webcomic, you should be familiar with internet "culture", as you might want to make references, etc. to different things, or just generally be informed about the humor at such a place as this. What you failed to do with your survey between your neighbours or whatever, was asking someone on a forum such as this, what they thought of it, as we are really what you want to reach with a webcomic.
that's street talk for "mom." think "pops," but "moms." that's just how it is. word. boost mobile.
I know I am EXTREMELY late but oh my god I was laughing so hard I was crying at "boost mobile" lmao
Edited: Mr. GoDong, I realized your advice was actually really good. :)
Hi Mr. GoDong,
I've never actually spent more than 10-15 minutes in an internet forum before joining Facepunch. I have, however, spent 25 years with a wide variety of people on the outside. While it's true I'm not too familiar with the internet culture, that very lack of familiarity may allow me to create comics for all humans, and not just message board enthusiasts.
Many are telling me to study the truly successful comics, and while I do think that's wise, I want to carve out a unique niche on the interweb. I want to appeal to the 3rd grade school teacher in Kentucky just as much as the hormonal college freshman in Australia. What I'm getting at is that I'm aiming for absolute mass appeal. Maybe if I didn't need Spicy Tornado to become popular in the next three months I could concentrate on appealing to a specific niche, but I need fans of all flavors, and quick.
P.S. Out of the many that took part in my informal survey, only four were neighbors.
P.S.S My brother and I will only get better with each and every earth rotation.
I'm sorry, but you're terrible at being witty.

I'm sorry, but you're king of the Negative Nathans.
Edit: I don't think you're actually King of the Negative Nathans, I've just had a bad day.
jasper you might as well be reading sweet bro and hella jeff for your serious webcomic inspiration
maybe even MSPA itself because that's where it comes from (and it's not an ironically awful comic like sbahj is)

No problem here.
Mr. Spicytornado, I have yet to see you heed my advice on including religious minorities in your comics. It is my personal belief that you would reach a much larger audience base if you did so.

Shoulda been a double rainbow.
this has to be a troll thread, no one is this dumb
protip for funny jokes
bounce it off people who you usually don't talk about jokes with (family and people you usually throw jokes at probably isn't the main audience your trying to reach) , if they laugh it might be a good joke.
keep doing it with a few people and if most of them laugh you got a good joke.
just saying. usually helps with the humor
SpicyTornado kills people.

SpicyTornado called his homies to fuck up your shit. :ohdear:
Jasper, all of your comics seem like their creator is attempting to form humor around subjects he has only an inkling of. You probably live in an isolated town into which pop culture and even news trickles very slowly and where people use phrases like "negative Nathan." (Edit: it can't be common, even in some local culture, for people not to know what "autism" means.) Consequently, all the jokes are on the most obvious aspect of the subject being "satirized." You just heard some buzz about Mayans and the end of the world, so you made a comic in which a Mayan controls the end of the world through some laptop-like device. It's extremely predictable and yet has no ground in reality, and leaves the reader wondering if that was supposed to be the joke.
I think that you should embrace that your comics are horrible and make them worse on purpose, because that's your only hope for success, unfortunately. Bring it from "too bad to be funny and too direct to be ironic" to "bad enough to be a parody of the idea of a webcomic," since making it good is out of the question.
[editline]30th April 2011[/editline]
The faces are important. It needs more Yoda.
So are people still taking the comics seriously, or did they finally figure out they're intentionally bad?
Edited: Mr. GoDong, I realized your advice was actually really good. :)
No problem. Saw your original message quoted, and while you may want to appeal to a third grader, he's probably the specific niche, as there aren't many of them on the internet. Hope this turns out well for you, but really try to find the humor that we've got here on Facepunch. Try go to fast threads for example, look in the LMAO pics, and so on. That is probably what you will have to appeal to.

This man is kinda right, too, though I think you have a slight chance to make your comic atleast somewhat sucessful. You'll have to adapt to our kind of humor, and not the one you have grown up with.
But it definitely helps. I will demonstrate with a custom made comic for the situation, depicting my reaction to this thread.
