Would it be worth diging around the kokoda trail and other areas around? Or would it all be rusted because of the tropic environment?
Well when I dig in the dunes close to the sea most items are actually really conserved.
And it's always worth digging!
Nope, there still loads of stuff to find, Last week someone found this mp44 and k98

So...
Is that pure rust, or are there any chances of re-plating it or restoring it in any way?

There is no rust on those weapons anymore it has been all been removed, the weapons are also treated to prevent rust forming in the future.
You can't really restore these weapons because the rust left pitting on the metal, it's best to leave them as you found them and clean of the rust to prevent further deterioration.
Here are the weapons before the rust was removed:

If you guys are interested of course.

Sounds good, I'll make a thread asap, if you want to add things just pm me.
Not restoring them, cleaning them up.
Removing dirt and loose rust with soft brush can't damage the items.
That's all I'm going to do.

You should return there and try to find some casings. They might've sunk in the dirt before they cleaned up the site.

I scanned whole the area with my detector, no casings...
The Germans probably took them to melt them down.
Damn I wish there was something like that to do in Australia
You could dig up the aftermath of the emu war.

http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1145511 the thread is up!
I just did a 4 month deployment in Guadalcanal, Solomon islands. Saw so many WW2 relics, like live bombs, grenades, coke bottles, and even Japanese skeletons. I ended up mailing home a coke bottle but not sure if it made it through customs :v:
