• Does humanity really matter at all?

Solution: If you find life to be meaningless, then make the most of it while you can by having fun.
when you put it that way it's shit why do we need that kind of perspective, does that perspective count/matter?
This is important, too. Perspective has gravity.
oh no life is pointless!!! go listen to linkin park and slit your wrists
I don't think I'll do that see, that would counteract with everything I've been trying to do at this point.
No. There is not point to anything, we don't matter, we have no purpose. Purpose is a human creation. Everything we've ever done collectively will one day be erased and the universe won't even flinch. Now get over it and go back to work.
:emo:
when you put it that way it's shit why do we need that kind of perspective, does that perspective count/matter?
Not at all, this thread doesn't matter, I don't matter, 10 years from now I doubt you'll remember anything I said. And that's just fine.
i want to grow up to be just like you
You pulled that outta your ass just to sound intelligent.
No, I didn't, actually. If every single person from the beginning of humanity thought that surviving was pointless because they were going to end up dying anyway, then we would have become extinct a long time ago.
though that would mean i would want to be like me when i was younger [editline]1st November 2010[/editline] fuck
Not at all, this thread doesn't matter, I don't matter, 10 years from now I doubt you'll remember anything I said. And that's just fine.
How old are you, out of curiosity?
I was going to make an effort to post a huge ass post on why I hate people that think on par with the way you think but I couldn't be bothered to. Have fun living life with a shit perspective.
So what you're saying is, you'd rather be ignorant? Imagine if you were ignorant, but still had the awareness you have now. It'd be even worse than the feeling you feel now, because you'd know even less. Sure man, ignorance may be bliss, but it's not the best way to go.
When we're younger we always fantasize about the could-be's and the what-if's. When we're younger we imagine things that aren't restrained to what we know, just what we can think of. I don't consider that mindset to be ignorant. Letting your imagination flow, letting your mind run free is what living is all about. If you put a limit on your thinking, on yourself, you aren't living. I think children possess the smartest minds on the face of the earth.

Alright. I tried to think of a thousand, "don't worry about it" type of things, but you know what? It's life. Learn to deal with what you got, and move a long. We all want to reclaim our innocence, but once reality/guilt is seen, it can't be unseen. This reminds me, why are you trying to guilt trip yourself? All you're doing is making shit cut deeper.. You want to do something? Give humanity meaning? Get the fuck off your computer, and get outside, and fix whatever is bugging you. Prove a point that, "There is something wrong" and get people to do something about it. That is all from me... I really can't go on without flamming.
I'm sorry if I made any of you angry, that being said from what I gather from some of your opinions, but not everyone thinks the same. I hope you don't think I'm trying to make anyone depressed, that's the last thing I wanna do

It makes sense to him, and will make sense to him until he comes across logic that shows otherwise. Besides, people complain when you live the other way (if you can). That is, believing what you want for no other reason than it's nice. If you don't like his perspective, fine, don't take it. However, don't try to cheapen it. It's just as valid as yours.

But I see you are all in the same boat as me. Not surprising really
Maybe its that innocence of childhood is sitll here - just with new questions in a different format.
you obviously havent seen kidzworld.com
I'm talking about three or four year olds. Kidzworld is overrun with pre-teens. When we hit the age of twelve or thirteen, we stop asking questions. We stop wondering about the world around us. We stop imagining. We all become realists. We let reality control our thoughts rather than imagining crazy things because the realist in us knows we can't achieve what we imagine.

I thought it was discussion, in which case, I'd say the OP has provided a great topic for discussion.
Why would contacting exotic lifeforms make your existence any better or more meaningful. We'd just be two civilizations floating around space destined for nothing. The thing with you nihilists is that you've given up on the world for whatever reasons and invented your own ideal one. I believe this is applicable to all the people on here that have spun themselves an existentialist crisis or want to change genders or want to go back in time, all they really want is to get away from their current situation. You mention that you don't feel insecure or inadequate but is it accurate that you experience some degree of impostor syndrome? This habit of inventing your own far off and unobtainable values is not uncommon, it's not unusual for people to pursue esoteric interests because they feel inadequate at something else. You also express the mundanity of the sciences early on and how you could easily become adept at them, somehow as if you fully grasp everything there is to know about the world. If you substituted a portion of that self-assured disposition with feigned interest in science and actually read up on these subjects you'll find that there's a whole world of wonders that's yet to be discovered. Eventually you'll be able to adopt a more constructive world view as easily as you've your current one. Again, it's not unusual to feel like this, we're all ego-driven creatures and nihilism is just the ego's way of clinging onto that last sense of self-importance that comes from having it all figured out. That's at least how I see it. Who knows most likely I'm all wrong and you are the Übermensch.

Just because you think you can't do something doesn't make you a realist, the fact that you find a way to make what you want work makes you awesome in your own right.
Not at all, this thread doesn't matter, I don't matter, 10 years from now I doubt you'll remember anything I said. Who the fuck discovered the point slope formula, or every formula ever?Hell if I know, but their discovery lives on forever
Universe = Pointless Why give a fuck?

Think about Jules Verne and how many people thought he was batshit for writing "From the Earth to the Moon." The man invented the genre of science-fiction, but at the time most people probably considered him and people who actually read his books to be crazy because they were all about stuff that could never possibly happen.

Who knows most likely I'm all wrong and you are the Übermensch.
The existence of life other than our own would be amazing what are you talking about, could you even imagine the scientific, political, social, and maybe even spiritual information we could gather from them. We would reach our very own golden age. Even if we met a hostile extraterrestrial race. If there is anyone that appreciates what science has done and the leaps it has taken mankind to discover said things more than me I'll eat my hat, but ego has nothing to do with it, if I could have been the first man on the moon I would have been the first in line to attempt it and I wouldn't have said a word about it. I could be this famous actor, singer, president and have all the fame and fortune but I would know it means nothing. Then there are real heroes making discoveries and actually helping mankind progress and they get close to 0 recognition by the world, and I admire them for it, but I know they know that they can only imagine what their work will escalate into and they won't even be able to see it. And that's just sad you know.
All of humanity could die tomorrow and the universe would keep moving. We are but one spark falling off of a cog on a machine larger than we could ever imagine, and when that spark finally dies the machine will continue on regardless, with no way of caring or even knowing that anything happened at all. That's why I'm an existentialist!
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pool singing at night, And wild plum trees in tremulous white; Robins will wear their feathery fire, Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire; And not one will know of the war, not one Will care at last when it is done. Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree, If mankind perished utterly; And Spring herself when she woke at dawn Would scarcely know that we were gone.

Tell me what does ranting/whining over a trivial matter accomplish? Nothing, it just furthers the ranter/whiner into more depression/anger or whatever he feels on the subject. If he were to focus more on his life and life as we know it now and not on life after he is deceased, he more then likely would have a more successful/enjoyable life. His perspective on life now will achieve him nothing. While the other has a better chance of achieving on what he would see fit as a successful life.

I know most of it will be pointless, but I still do what I love. Sure some things have changed in my life, and I hate the fact that I'm pretty much a cog in a machine that will only be taken notice when I break, and then ultimately be replaced by an exact replica, but... fuck I forgot where I was going with this.
