Nobody will be replaced by an exact replica. I'm not trying to pull that "Everybody is unique" garbage, but whatever you decide to do with your life, you're working off of what someone else, a previous cog in the machine, has done.
Actually, as depressive as I may seem, I do workout everyday, read and study things like biochemistry, astrology, to oceanography. I know most of it will be pointless, but I still do what I love. Sure some things have changed in my life, and I hate the fact that I'm pretty much a cog in a machine that will only be taken notice when I break, and then ultimately be replaced by an exact replica, but... fuck I forgot where I was going with this.
It shouldn't be pointless if you are doing what you love. So what if you will never be a famous man remembered for amazing things. As long as you live your life doing what you loved and died doing so,you will have achieved a successful life. The future should be the least of your worries and as such shouldn't anger you.

Usually I'd make this a really long winded post, but I'm gonna give you the basics and let you figure out why life is fucking amazing. 13.7 billion years. That's how long, give or take a few hundred million years, the universe has been around for. 13.7 billion years of events going PRECISELY as they did allowed for you to be conceived and born, for your consciousness to come into existence. 13.7 billion years for one measly hydrogen atom to be in the wrong place at the long time and there was no you. Think about it for a while. Soon enough it'll dawn on you how crazy and amazing it all is, and you'll realise that even though there are disappointments and downs occasionally... you've just got to enjoy the ride, because it was god damn unlikely you'd even GET to go through it in the first place.

Its simply just an itch that needs to be scratched
Oh great. You not only think life is ultimately pointless but you also think human emotions are pointless, too.

God? Sheer luck? A mistake?
There might be a purpose or there might not be. There is always hope.
Life is amazing I agree but, the sheer things that had to happen at the exact time makes me think sometimes. God? Sheer luck? A mistake?
Miracles.
having a discussion about how pointless everything is is fucking stupid
Life is amazing I agree but, the sheer things that had to happen at the exact time makes me think sometimes. God? Sheer luck? A mistake?
Statistical motherfucking improbability.
Oh great. You not only think life is ultimately pointless but you also think human emotions are pointless, too.
Well they are.
Life is amazing I agree but, the sheer things that had to happen at the exact time makes me think sometimes. God? Sheer luck? A mistake?
simple universal rules. for fucks sake its not complicated when you break it down to what it really is. [editline]1st November 2010[/editline]
Statistical motherfucking improbability.
more like statistical certainty given the number of planets in the universe. [editline]1st November 2010[/editline]
Well they are.
doesnt make them any less real
simple universal rules. for fucks sake its not complicated when you break it down to what it really is.
Well I'd like to see you create life right now. Thing is just because you read about it, it doesn't give you the experience to replicate it.
The very idea of love is pointless, be it any kind of stimulation from pheromonal, sexual, or mental. Its simply just an itch that needs to be scratched
Oh for fucks sake, I give up on you. Have fun with your "meaningless" life.
Well I'd like to see you create life right now. Thing is just because you read about it, it doesn't give you the experience to replicate it.
what the fuck are you even talking about? with the correct starting conditions life will form. these conditions aren't extremely likely, however there are a lot of places without life in the universe too.
more like statistical certainty given the number of planets in the universe.
I'm talking about life itself, but A life. An individual. The odds of any one individual coming into existence, of your, or my consciousnesses ever having have developed in the first place was fucking ridiculously low.
I'm talking about life itself, but A life. An individual.
having a discussion about how pointless everything is is fucking stupid
this thread is just so pointless yo
Oh for fucks sake, I give up on you.
I'm sorry but if it weren't for things like emotions, scientist wouldn't have to deal with protestors or people with a sense of higher being who decide what is morally right or wrong. [editline]1st November 2010[/editline]
what the fuck are you even talking about? with the correct starting conditions life will form. these conditions aren't extremely likely, however there are a lot of places without life in the universe too.
You yourself said it is not complicated.
I'm sorry but if it weren't for things like emotions, scientist wouldn't have to deal with protestors or people with a sense of higher being who decide what is morally right or wrong.
So basically you think emotions are useless and are weighing humanity down?
I'm sorry but if it weren't for things like emotions, scientist wouldn't have to deal with protestors or people with a sense of higher being who decide what is morally right or wrong. [editline]1st November 2010[/editline] You yourself said it is not complicated.
i said the processes behind every step going into the formation of life are not complicated. i didn't say i had mastery over them and could control them, or create life. just because i can explain how a computer works, doesn't mean i can pull one out of the fucking air.
So basically you think emotions are useless and are weighing humanity down?
Not necessarily, emotions are interpretations of how the brain processes circumstances, those circumstances lead to ideas. Ideas are good.
The existence of life other than our own would be amazing what are you talking about, could you even imagine the scientific, political, social, and maybe even spiritual information we could gather from them. We would reach our very own golden age. Even if we met a hostile extraterrestrial race. If there is anyone that appreciates what science has done and the leaps it has taken mankind to discover said things more than me I'll eat my hat, but ego has nothing to do with it, if I could have been the first man on the moon I would have been the first in line to attempt it and I wouldn't have said a word about it. I could be this famous actor, singer, president and have all the fame and fortune but I would know it means nothing. Then there are real heroes making discoveries and actually helping mankind progress and they get close to 0 recognition by the world, and I admire them for it, but I know they know that they can only imagine what their work will escalate into and they won't even be able to see it. And that's just sad you know.
Are you unable to utilise this passion for science and discovery in an already wondrous world because we don't have aliens? You mention political and social aspects of alien life that we could study while in that same post demeaning actors, singers and presidents in our own culture. In essence, that's all I'm trying to get across, if we actually had contacted aliens and they were now a relatively normal part of our lives these people you admire would study them and you would have found mundanity and irrelevance in the world all the same. I'm too tired to really elaborate on the question of ego, you base this whole tragedy of the scientist around acquiring recognition and being compensated for their work. I meant ego more in regard to the need we all share for other's recognition, besides, people like you who take an interest in science will always recognise the scientific efforts of others. I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here with these threads in general in mind, I'm not looking to antagonise you specifically, I just get contentious and adopt a conflicting viewpoint for sport it seems. I can actually relate to a lot in your original post. Keep your chin up, that's all anyone can do.
Not necessarily, emotions are interpretations of how the brain processes circumstances, those circumstances lead to ideas. Ideas are good.
an odd statement considering entropy will eventually end the universe as we know it thus making everything extremely pointless.
Not necessarily, emotions are interpretations of how the brain processes circumstances, those circumstances lead to ideas. Ideas are good.
You are being heavily influenced by emotions, whatever you perceive as your own cold, logical analysis could just as well be deluded and dulled by emotion.
Not necessarily, emotions are interpretations of how the brain processes circumstances, those circumstances lead to ideas. Ideas are good.
Now I am going to ask another question. Do you have a good social life?
One of the reasons why humanity is now dominant is because of survival. From the start, they always sought to advance technology and live out their lives while they can. The focus is placed on enjoying your life. For example, even if you are a scientist and you don't get to see the fruit of your labour because you were imprisoned or simply dead, you can take relief in the fact that YOU mattered, and that you had played a role in the advancement of humanity and the improvement of other human's lives. Same thing for cavemen, that's how we managed to reach the technological age. Over the generations, humanity strived to improve itself. This is the purpose that drives many forward to play a beneficial role towards technological advancement.

Actors, musicians, presidents and the like all have free will and can choose to do what they want with life, as I said I'm not trying to force my views on anyone just raising points. I just meant in the very essence of gathering information from an intelligent source other than our own would be welcome. And on the subject of aliens, it would be always be better that we meet them now rather than later and I hope that chance will arrive. And with ego, I acknowledge that it grows as time passes otherwise I wouldn't be talking to you I would be too busy lighting things on fire.
I feel the same way when i'm doing my homework, OP.
