I love Aliens, one of my favourite movies. I also really like the comic books featuring colonial marines and the likes. Speaking of which, can't wait for the colonial marines game :)
Does it really matter, afterall they're pretty androgynos to begin with. It's not like the aliens have tits to differentiate between male and females.
The Queen ? she's pretty different. I mean, no tits but a big fuck-off birthing sack and all. I think all the others are supposed to be males, like an ant hive.
Fuck off. Alien is a masterpiece, but so is Aliens. Don't you dare lump it into the shitty action category with shit like Starship troopers. It's Cameron's talent as a creative artist that made Aliens more than just an action "flick". [editline]04:59PM[/editline] Don't. The AVP films are not only abominations of both series, they are just terribly shit films. Jesus christ, stop being overly pretentious. You can create a film with substance and quality without it having to be a fucking arthouse picture that waxes poetic. Aliens is one of those films.
Honestly, I don't see that. But if you do, hey it's your life. Yes, I suppose you can, but I think it's important to note that's it's harder to make a movie about a bunch of people alone on a spaceship with hardly any weapons than it is to make a movie about a crack team of marines with an arsenal of explosives and combat rifles. I respect a movie that doesn't need constant action to be interesting more than one that does. And you may not give a shit, but that's just how I see it. Really, the aliens can't be said to have a definite gender.
They have acidic blood, of course they are female.
The Queen ? she's pretty different. I mean, no tits but a big fuck-off birthing sack and all. I think all the others are supposed to be males, like an ant hive.
still technically androgynous when you think about it
I need the door opening sounds from this movie
I watched the first one after seeing this thread, and I have to say the expression on the cat's face is priceless. You just think though, maybe if they stopped going off on their own they wouldn't be dead? But nonetheless a great film. I need to find time to watch the second one now.

From there on they only split up to accomplish tasks faster because they had to get the fuck off the ship. And even if they didn't split up, the Alien is practically indestructible. What are you going to do, frighten it away with numbers? Also, here's the original end to the alien lifecycle, with the Alien's victims being strung up and transformed into eggs. Ridley Scott said he left the scene out for pacing reasons, but I disagree. I think it would be a great final push, showing the fate of those captured by the Alien.
Makes much more sense than the queen thing too. How can a single one of them be of any threat without a queen? Which apparantly is a super rare thing to birthe. It's a recipe for extinction not endless reproduction.
Aliens was on last night on Film 4 :D
You mean where she runs into the Alien nest and blows up shit with a grenade launcher? [editline]02:52AM[/editline] I'm not saying it's not a good movie, because it is. I'm saying it's also a dumb action movie.
you are wrong. Alien is a sci-fi horror masterpiece. Aliens is not a dumb action. It is a very well made and clever action. Blowing things up doesn't automatically equal dumb. Believe it or not explosions do exist and sometimes are used to blow shit up!! What the fuck is dumb about it at all? If you widdle anything down to "person a walks in to place a and blows a up" you can make even the most clever films seem dumb. "An alien goes on a spaceship and fucks people up" yeah alien must be stupid too [editline]11:16PM[/editline] what i'm trying to say here is shut up

There's no disputing that Aliens is an sci-fi/horror action movie, it is. But saying it's a "dumb" action movie is wrong on so many levels. Compare Aliens to GI Joe. Now that's a fucking dumb action movie. Aliens has substance and style, and parallels the vietnam war. And like I said, it's purely to James Cameron's credit as an creative artist that he managed to pull that off. Any other director given such a daunting task would've fucked it up drastically.
parallels the vietnam war, eh? did you just get back from intro to cinema
I loved all 4 movies, even though my memories of the 2nd one are quite hazy. In fact, I don't remember almost anything from the 2nd movie.

It's the kind with stereotypes and bad comedy relief that is never in any way funny. It was a bit overzealous of me to say it was a "dumb action movie". What I'm trying to say is that it was dumb in comparison to Alien, in that it failed to capture so many of the attributes of the Alien that made it so good. I suppose I'm just trying to say that he took something, made it into something else, and I'm bitter about it. I'm not trying to say, nor have I ever said it was a bad movie in any respect. I'm just saying that I think it didn't do the world justice thematically. And I care about that kind of shit. For me, it all comes down to respect for good design. In my opinion you should use concepts as they were intended, because that's when they're at their strongest. Trying to take an idol of darkness, and sex, and death, and then trying to make it some bunch of big bees that waves their faces in the camera and goes "ooga booga booga!", it just doesn't seem right to me. It's like if someone made a sequel to Predator, except now the Predators have hoods and they run into the middle of crowds and explode. It's just not what they were designed for. Predators were made to be hunters, the Alien was made to be a serial rapist. That would explain your lack of memory and your liking of the fourth movie. Which was terribad.
The chestburster scene in the first movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I had nightmares for a week.

Mr. Mcguffin is right though. The Alien is meant to be a dark, sexual creature that reproduces by raping it's victims. Rape doesn't just mean "Penis goes in vagina." The rape is symbolic. It is the taking advantage of someone's body, which the Alien does in the films as a form of reproduction. This is all canon by the way. I'm pretty sure Ridley Scott said most of this.
I really don't understand your fascination with the rape idea of the Alien, personally, I like what they are now, I love what Aliens made them.
The Alien preys on multiple phobias. Suffocation, being hunted, rape, what makes it's sexual aspect so important is that it represents a sort of antithesis of what society views as moral, at least here in the US. Sex is a very taboo thing, so we have strong reactions to it, negative or otherwise. Harnessing those emotions is what makes the Alien so brilliant. It keeps you from growing comfortable with it, it keeps you from ever getting a good image of it in your mind(at least within the span of the movie). It also works with many powerful images. It combines skeletal objects with a human outline, it combines predatory aspects with sexual ones, it combines a sick sort of sensuality with a cold uncaring violence. Used properly, you can leave an audience just enough room to understand what it looks like while maintaining enough mystery that they can all see it as something completely different. used properly, the Alien is almost unfathomable. Do you see what I'm getting at? The original Alien is something incredibly hard to grasp, like a nightmare. The Aliens version is just a monster who goes bump in the night, still relatively surprising, but never unfathomable. They're evil insects, nothing more. [editline]11:51PM[/editline]
I know he's right, but I like it better when you aren't thinking of it being rape
But that's the point. You aren't supposed to like it. It's supposed to be uncomfortable. You're supposed to feel violated. The Alien is supposed to be fucking your brain. That is it's purpose. The Alien is sex, and violence, and rape, and darkness, and suffocation, and smothering, all of those thoughts, being injected into your mind. And the fact that it can do that so well is a testament to it's genius.
Which one should I see first?
Which one should I see first?
Erm, the first?
Which one should I see first?
The first one unless you want to see the best one, in which case see Aliens
Sorry if this was already posted, but io9 just put up some cool concept art from the development of these two movies: http://io9.com/5475322/ridley-scotts-alien-could-have-looked-like-this/gallery/ I had no idea James Cameron was such a good draftsman.

Especially seeing as how there never was going to be a queen in Alien.
