Why, yes. Yes I am.
Care to explain how?
Instead of them being a 100% scary alien species, which is fine and fucking dandy, Cameron made them an actually interesting species, gave them a hierarchy, he made the Aliens look a lot cooler. Deal with it.

Yes, this is the second time you've told me that, now can you please tell me how?
If you don't tell me how they're "actually interesting" now I can hardly agree or disagree with you, now can I?

didn't see that one.
i just gave you a reason, what do you want from me
What, that they now have an uber alien? The addition of a queen makes all of the other Aliens now exponentially more interesting?
What, that they now have an uber alien? The addition of a queen makes all of the other Aliens now exponentially more interesting?
the addition of a hierarchy, and a hive system, yes
I haven't seen either movie and I don't really care either way but one could argue that the addition of a hierarchy makes them more relatable and concordantly less alien
the addition of a hierarchy, and a hive system, yes
How does that make them interesting?
If I say, "sexual imagery incorporated into the design of the Aliens makes them interesting", I have to say why it makes them interesting. Otherwise I could just pull anything out of my ass and it would mean just as much.

That's sort of what I'm trying to get at. The Alien is almost Lovecraftian, it's a monster that you aren't supposed to understand. It does this by being something you don't want to understand.
By turning them into insects it takes away from them, it's like if you made Cthulhu into a Godzilla villain. Would it be awesome? Yeah, for a while, but what makes Cthulhu awesome in the first place is that he's fucking Cthulhu. An elder god from the stars who invades your dreams and drives you to insanity, not a big octopus man who roars and smashes Tokyo.

wow, stop.
I might wish to remind everyone that the use of the word Xenomorph is still dumb a page later.
Too bad, because I'm not going to stop saying it and you can't make me.
Also, I like what they have become because it makes them more believable as a creature. Less mysterious yes, but still scary in my opinion.

When I saw the alien latch onto that guys face, I got up and said "bullshit!". When it burst out of his chest later on, I said "impossible and stupid!". And then when it turned into a giant penis headed rapist I walked out of the theater because it insulted my intelligence so.
But then they made the sequel and it turns out that they're bugs, so I said "FINALLY something believable!".
[editline]08:32AM[/editline]
Moral of the story: Believability is overrated. If I want something believable I'll watch Animal Planet.
Well it's science fiction. Still nice to have that believability. And the added origin of the eggs being created by a queen made it more so.

I think you missed my point.
I guess I did. Unless you were saying that you'd still want to see it as a mysterious killing machine rather than a familiar species. If so, then I understood.
I loved the two movies, the last two were awful though.

I'm trying to understand why you would want it to be familiar.
Doesn't that rather defeat the point? Isn't that like making Godzilla six feet tall?
By the way, what the fuck was up with the runner skipping the chestburster phase?

Just because it's familiar doesn't mean it's not frightening. But I do understand what you mean.

Who knows? That whole movie was nothing but plot holes.
But it's less frightening. I'm just trying to understand what's being gained by making it familiar and understandable.
I don't know, I think it made a nice movie though. I guess it's because I can't appreciate the first one as much as you can.
One thing I've always wondered; how the fuck does the aliens navigate? Like, they have no visible eyes.
They have eyes inside their head. If you look at one of the prop heads or one of the skulls, you can see eye sockets at the front of the head just above the mouth.
[editline]10:54PM[/editline]
Makes much more sense than the queen thing too. How can a single one of them be of any threat without a queen? Which apparantly is a super rare thing to birthe. It's a recipe for extinction not endless reproduction.
Seeing as they are all "female" (I think) they probably all have the ability to become a queen and will eventually molt and become a queen if there isn't one present.
Sounds reasonable to me.
ITT: Mr. Mcguffin trolls you all.
My two cents: Alien is a horror movie, Aliens is an action movie with horror elements. Is it a different kind of film? Yes, as you woud expect from a different director. James Cameron directs action movies, and excels in that area (Terminator 2, Aliens, Avatar if you ignore all that preachy bullshit). Ridley Scott directs deep, complex films with a lot of hidden messages, metaphors, and shit like that underneath (Blade Runner, Alien, etc) Does Aliens being an action movie make it a worse film? No, it doesn't. It was suspenseful, intriguing, and downright balls to the wall awesome. Mcguffin, stop being such a goddamn film snob, I's entertainment, it's meant to entertain, and if it's entertaining you then it's doing its job.
Alien is my all-time favorite movie, Aliens was awesome but not as good as the first, 3 and 4 were just awful.
Aliens was a very good movie, but alien is the only one I'd feel comfortable calling a film.
I'm going to set off all the James Cameron fans, but I'm not really impressed by him, if you look at his movies together it would seem that he is incapable of making something unique; they're incredibly well done but completely generic. They have no soul.

Yeah, having a different opinion = LULZ TRULL LULZ
I'm saying I prefer the design of Alien over that of Aliens because Alien was singularly unique, how is that a trollish opinion in the slightest? It's not like I've ever even said that Aliens was a bad movie.

I kind of agree here. Looking at all his stuff it sort of starts to feel like a bunch of stuck together prefab plot elements.
I mean, looking at his early work with Terminator, it feels like he's sort of working out what it is he wants to do. He hasn't quite worked out the formula yet. But as time goes on, you see him kind of quantifying what makes a good movie, culminating in Avatar. Which is like a movie made by movie scientists. It's acceptable, bright, happy, actiony, has a love story, has a badass general, has explosions, has aliens, it's like a distilled essence of blockbuster.
I think most of that stems from the fact that his ego is fucking colossal, but you always get some of that just by being a big time director. I just feel that he's more focused on making a ton of money and getting a ton of praise then actually making something worthwhile. Which is fine, I guess. I mean the movies are entertaining. It's just kind of depressing.
I mean, if you're a filmmaker, and your job is to tell stories, and all you're doing is making the same basic prefabricated love/action plot over and over again for money, I don't know. I'd feel like I was being praised for busy work. But hey, it's his life.
Though I'd probably be extraordinarily more depressed for having created the fucking Na'vi, but that's a completely different story.
Really, does no one else find it funny that the guy who's dream was to create this,

A happy forest tribe, worked on this

A dark, psycho sexual horror classic? Does this seem like oil and water to no one but me?

Thinking about it... that's actually kind of ironic. Heh.
Uh, colonial marines? :3

Mcgruffin, I certainly see where you're coming from, you prefer dark horrible things over, well, James Cameron's xenomorphs, it all comes down to what you prefer, but no matter what, both are amazing ideas of a species, maybe you won't agree to it, but I'm sure a lot will. So, stop arguing over which is better because it's all based on opinion (well no shit, but there's no point, you can't change someone's opinion in this case)
