but.. you need a damn good HD TV to notice the real difference. so if you got a SD TV... don't do it
Doesn't really count with animated videos, as the graphics won't really change.
There's a reason why you want a 40" screen or larger before buying bluray, as you can't really notice a differense.
When I grow up, I wanna be just like you.
Hey man I would not doubt that you're older than me. :v:
I'm not really interested in BluRay other than for TV series. I think BluRay is already obsolete and they should come out with a new format for movies, like a flash drive or something.
The only blu-ray video I own is District 9.
I like it.
Absolutely worth it. :v:
it's only worth it if you have a good set up. blu-ray with small hdtv and weak speakers is pointless. but with a big 1080p screen, and surround sound, it's an incredible experience.
animated movies in particular are spectacular. wall-e is amazing.
for the trillionth time, screen size is almost entirely irrelevant. as long as it's a 1080p screen, all that matters is where the screen is in relation to you.

this post makes absolutely no sense. you think blu-ray is obsolete, but then go on to say that they should come out with a new format, detailing that you have no knowledge of another format.
so how the hell is blu-ray obsolete?
[editline]04:11PM[/editline]
Doesn't really count with animated videos, as the graphics won't really change.
err...what? i'm trying to break down what you're saying...but it doesn't really make any sense as rationality, can you please explain your reasoning.
There's a reason why you want a 40" screen or larger before buying bluray, as you can't really notice a differense.
again, all that really matters is where the screen is. not everyone has their tv ~6.7 ft from where they sit.
[editline]04:12PM[/editline]
I don't get it. Why do them Images that are SD look different then
because DVDs are compressed to all hell

and to answer your question about Avatar and 3D, the 3D avatar is using will be compatible with some TVs.
just about every DLP for the last 3 years or so, most LCDs for the last year, and new LCD and plasmas. the technology is LCD shudder, and they're pricey.

Ok that's understandable. Anyway you can upgrade the PS3 with new firmware if some discs are giving you trouble and won't play or something. And MB is right, as long as you have 1920x1080 it's HD. You won't notice the HD res if you sit 10 feet away from a 22 inch monitor however. That's why you get a bigger screen the farther you sit away. As a rule of thumb, get one size up from the size you think you need, you won't regret it.
I'm buying a PS3 Slim soon, this will be one of the selling points for me.
Yes.
I bought Blazing Saddles on Blu ray. The quality was so amazing for a movie made 30+ years ago. I was amazed!
I'm still pissed they haven't released a Back To The Future Blue Ray collection though.

the most common formula for figuring out distance from a 1080p display is to double the inches and that's about how far you should sit
ie say it's a 52" screen, try to sit about 8.5-9ft from the tv if possible.
[editline]07:27PM[/editline]
also, PS3s are 3D ready as per the method i mentioned earlier, LCD shudder glasses (note this does NOT mean you NEED an LCD screen). sometime when Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a Sony Pictures film, rereleases on Blu-Ray 3D, the PS3 will get an update, most likely. All Sony's said is sometime before the end of the year, but they have said they intend for 3D blu-rays to be out and on the shelves by/around summer.

all of those titles have frequently been slated for a release that particular year every year. last year they were expected by the end of 2009, a year prior the end of 2008.
the only one that looks realistic, really, is Alien Quadrilogy as the Blu-Rays already exist (in an interview Sigourney Weaver said she gave them to her daughter for christmas or her birthday or something like that)
I've always wondered if using my PS3 as a blu-ray player was a bad idea, I don't know if I'm getting the 'FULL HD EXPERIENCE' with it. Can anyone comment on it? Alot of the time when playing Lost on blu-ray for example it can seem very 'blurry' when they're moving around etc.
That's probably motion blur artifacts from LCD. Plasmas FTW.
If you have a nice tv they are most definitely worth it. I have a LG 60PS60 60' 1080p plasma, they look stunning. I don't buy blurays though. I rent them from netflix. Much much cheaper imo.
That's probably motion blur artifacts from LCD. Plasmas FTW.
old LCDs*
on new LCDs if that occurs it's usually because of some "feature" that's enabled by default.
i myself don't like plasmas, the color is screwy, they generate an inconvenient amount of heat, and the burn in is still pretty bad.
Also you can't use infrared headphones with plasmas as you get interference from the tv itself. My tv burns in pretty easily, although it's the temporary kind like when you pause a disc for a few minutes. Sometimes I run the scrolling bars feature to get rid of the burn in from the pillars of watching 4:3 content.
And another thing, make sure the tv's power supply is quiet, mine makes an annoying hum when on. I am not sure if any plasmas are quiet though.

Gotta agree. Especially if you're on the fence about the purchase and you haven't seen the movie yet. Like Halloween 2. I rented it. And I FUCKING hated it. Rob Zombie is such a piece of shit.
Only reason i'll buy Blu-ray movies is because they usually contain more extra material than DVD's.
Only reason i'll buy Blu-ray movies is because they usually contain more extra material than DVD's.
I disagree. I would make the purchase to enjoy the movie to the fullest.

That's an excellent comparison.
No, unless you have a 40"+ TV you won't notice much difference, even then DVD's still look fairly decent.
Also, a fun fact for you; a lot of Blu-Rays are just upscaled DVD quality footage put on to a new disc, this is allowed because the "HD" spec doesn't forbid this.
I only have a 32'' TV.. But I'm getting a 46''.. Full HD this time. But a 32'' TV will do the job in HD.
Summary: Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) is a gimmick technology unless you analyze the pixels to every movie you watch.
Or if you watch movies on your computer. The difference is clear when the screen is a foot from you.
Cases in which Blue-ray (I don't give a shit if it's called Blu) isn't worth it:
-TV that is <40"
-A TV that is not 1920x1080 (not really worth it if your TV is only 720p, though it really depends on your will to spend money on movies)
-The Blue-ray version is just a copy of the DVD one on a blue-ray disc with the same crappy quality
If you watch it on your PC screen then ignore the first point, since you will be pretty close.
this post makes absolutely no sense. you think blu-ray is obsolete, but then go on to say that they should come out with a new format, detailing that you have no knowledge of another format.
It's a disc. Media discs have been around since the '80s.
And I suggested a new format, but I don't KNOW of a new one. You're right. That's because they don't exist yet. I thought all of this was rather evident from my saying they should come out with a new one.
The big advantage, for consumers, of blu ray is that it also plays your dvds.
The jump from VHS was worse because it made your VHS collection obsolete.
If the next storage medium was flash drives or something like that, your dvd collection would be useless.

I miss VHS :saddowns:
People keep saying flash memory is going to be the next biggest thing, but with the value of the dollar in the toilet, I doubt it would ever catch on. I mean if you compare prices of DDR2 memory to 6 months and a year ago, their price in dollars has more than doubled. You used to be able to have 4 GB of DDR2 1066 for $50-60 and now it's $100-140. Other types of memory are in the same boat.
Now compare that to a disc made with a couple cents of plastic and a razor thin coating of aluminum reflective coating.

simply being around for so long doesn't instantly make it obsolete. disk based hard drives have been around for far longer, are those magically obsolete?

to the first statement, this is hilarious because first you spell it wrong then say, basically "fuck you i'm not going to spell it right" and then you spell it right. perfect way to set the stage for the idea that you're retarded.
-again, screen size is irrelevant, it all comes down to resolution
-this is somewhat fair
-this is retarded. you've clearly never even seen a blu-ray before, or you're just stupid.

well when people are referring to flash memory, they're not referring to RAM.
USB thumb drives, SD cards, micro SD cards, memory stick duo, etc. all of these have done nothing other than go down in price since they debuted.

I have a 32'', 720p TV. And I notice a substantial difference.
i noticed a difference between upscaled DVD and blu-ray on a 26" 1080i (1366x768, so closer to 720p) display.

Full HD though is noticeable to 720p. At least I see a difference.
