Because they look bad most of the time.
That, and putting borders on blurry snapshots with the flash on is kind of really pretentious It's better not to obsess over the presentation of your artwork, just do it and focus on the actual content
If a picture is really nice, you could have it printed and put a real frame around it.
Yeah I know, I wasn't implying that you were, it's just that other people do which makes it difficult for me to get honest critique on my photos. [editline]04:24AM[/editline] Because they look bad most of the time.
Ah right. I use borders because I like giving my photos a place to stop. It makes them more contained. [editline]09:49AM[/editline]
That, and putting borders on blurry snapshots with the flash on is kind of really pretentious It's better not to obsess over the presentation of your artwork, just do it and focus on the actual content
Why is putting a 5 pixel border "obsession" over presentation? Obsession over presentation is the white-dropped rounded-corners frame that all hipster photography uses, that takes more time than any real post-work.
Why is putting a 5 pixel border "obsession" over presentation? Obsession over presentation is the white-dropped rounded-corners frame that all hipster photography uses, that takes more time than any real post-work.
No.
No.
Your one word reply isn't answering my question or helping me whatsoever. Why do you all get so butthurt over a fucking border?
Because they would be better off without one. And I don't like the smoking pics either. And the one with the huge light flare is quite pointless to be honest.
Because they would be better off without one. And I don't like the smoking pics either. And the one with the huge light flare is quite pointless to be honest.
Jesus christ. There's not meant to be a point to any of them. I take them because I enjoy it. Yes, I get it, none of you like the smoking pictures. Okay. I've got like one decent piece of advice about them and that's it. Not sure what happened to this thread, but you've all turned into assholes. That light flare is completely unintentional. That's what happens when you expose an image at night for 5 minutes with a bright shining at you. or if you're referring to the one with the road, that's a car. It's the absolute intent of the piece. Therefor, not pointless.
hrm... this thread HAS shifted. I for one welcome the new wave of critiques, even if they are a little... critical.
hrm... this thread HAS shifted. I for one welcome the new wave of critiques, even if they are a little... critical.
That's the problem. I've gotten very little critique but a lot of "I DON'T LIKE IT."
That's the problem. I've gotten very little critique but a lot of "I DON'T LIKE IT."
well, it may have been that you capped off the whole set with several pictures of sir smokesalot. Honestly, I bet no one would notice if you posted up the entire set again without him :v: if you want critique, though, I CAN give it on a few things... I've done a bit of night photography as well, and I know that flares are a major problem that you just have to use to your advantage- I understand the one with the car was intentional, and it's hard to catch when you're headlight-level and it produces only one streak with the exposure, but people misinterpreting your work is an unavoidable (and sometimes desirable) side effect of art. If you can get people to stop and look at an image for a few seconds and decide for themselves what it means to them, it may as well have become a second piece of work.
[img_thumb]http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs51/i/2009/320/9/a/Weatherford_Lake_at_Night__1__by_Boyblundr.jpg[/img_thumb]
as I think someone else said before, a little too 'snapshotty'. This raises the question, though- I see you're using a Nikon D40 (using my psychic ninja powers). Are you taking your pictures in RAW format? I would suggest setting your camera to RAW+JPG so it saves 2 pictures out, a small JPG for archival value, and RAWs, which are what you should be opening up and editing. These pictures have serious color-balance issues and are washed out, something I had trouble with when I first started with night photography- note- flare, extreme yellow from bad streetlighting, etcetera. I fought the bad contrast/washout with level editing, though, something you can do still. Also, despite being at an ISO of 200 (ninja powers again), maybe you can turn it down to whatever minimum that camera has (my nikon d5000 goes from 200 - 100 - "lo" 0.3, 0.7, 1). You don't need the extra sensitivity if you're (presumably) using a tripod, since it's holding it perfectly still for the entire exposure. Yeah, I'm using a d40 and shooting in raw. That saturated foliage was thanks to a nearby light, you're right, and my camera sadly won't go any lower than ISO 200. I'm looking toward upgrading to at least a D60... D40's lens selection is mediocre at best thanks to the lack of a built-in autofocus motor. I appreciate your advice though, thanks a lot.
Well Boyblunder, a lot of people just post in here to show what they're working on, and not specifically for critique. Usually if you want specific critique on things you should make a thread so people are more motivated to give critique.

(:ninja:) also, though I haven't looked at the features of the d40/60/90s, upgrading from the 40 to the 60 seems like it might be a little too small of a jump for the money involved. I'm not saying more expensive or bigger numbers means better camera (my d5000 would be GOD in comparison :v:), but if you're doing a lot of night shots make sure to mention that to the person at the camera shop, they'll know what to suggest... but will try selling you something slightly more expensive anyways :/ [editline]05:49PM[/editline]
Well Boyblunder, a lot of people just post in here to show what they're working on, and not specifically for critique. A thread (as possibly damaging as it may be) will make sure all comments are directed for you, and that you'll get more people seeing it, giving an obviously better chance of the good critics actually saying something. edit- what am I saying, you should know this by now. Look at your postcount/joindate, I feel shame for talking like you were new around here! :o
I suppose you have a point.
I suppose you have a point.
looking forward to your topics soon! :D
looking forward to your topics soon! :D
Yeah, next time I go on a decent shoot I'll make a thread. But I'll keep putting my here-and-there photos right here. I haven't visited this thread in a while, so I was expecting what we had going a few versions ago. :P
sounds about right, hehe.

Mostly photo dumping and no comments with some constructive criticism here and there. The problem with CC is that it takes so much time that few bothers to give it to stuff the poster doesn't even find thread worthy. So people just tell the poster if they like it or not if they say anything. And even in threads CC is generally lacking, so yeah.
