Hey guys, just bought a Chinon CP-9AF on craigslist for $45. Doing a bit of research, it's not worth much, but I started messing around with it, and it looks promising. It's my first camera, and I wanted to get into film, so I might make better investments someday. I don't even know where to start really. lol I need to get some film. Do any of you guys use lomography?
Yes, I do. Lomography is pretty fun, but a lot of the cameras are extremely over priced.
Anyways, where to start? If you're trying to use the lomographic approach, I'd say just buy some film, doesn't even matter what kind as long as your camera uses it, and go snap-happy. Absolutely no effort behind lomography, but you can still get a lot of cool results.
Now, if you're trying to take a more serious approach to photography, I wouldn't know where to tell you to start. I'd say take the time to learn about your camera at first; how it works, aperture/exposure knowledge etc. Once you have the basics down, you should then proceed to learn about different types of film, what kind your camera takes, what type of iso you'd want to shoot with, etc. Then finally, go have some fun.
Of course, I'm an amateur, and I'm sure there's way more you should be learning about and what not, so I'd suggest asking some more experienced members around these parts as to where you need to start. I'd suggest daijitsu first, seeing as how he is a mod for this section, and by what I've seen him post, knows what he is talking about.
Dude thank you. That's totally what I'm looking for. Appreciate it.
Someone want to explain what Lomography actually is?
Someone want to explain what Lomography actually is?
stemming from the name of the lomo camera (basically the original russian diana kind of camera), hipsters have taken up buying expensive remakes of cheap plastic cameras and shoot expired or color slide film because it looks vintage and produces light leaks now and again.
at least, that's the side that I don't like, there's good lomo too but it's 90% trendwhoring as I see it

hipster faggotry is mostly what it is
If there are any thrift stores around, you may be able to find a decent SLR, it might need a cleaning, but it's worth a shot.
I bought a pretty nice Yashica mat 124 TLR for 30 bucks, then cost me $20 to have a guy clean the insides up for me.

I have one of those! i'll take a pic and upload it if i can find it.
i'm no hipster trendy fag when i use lomo cameras.
does that make me a hipster?

it's ironic that you're not being hipstery by not being a hipster
therefore hipster
I'm so meta, even this
Speaking of TLRs...

I am really itching to go out and take pictures with this, wish the weather would clear up. Tried earlier while my friends were playing soccer, was too hard to follow them though.
And that cylindrical stack next to it is all of my 55mm filters. Yea there's a lot.

look at your viewfinder, you'll notice a square that either pops out or folds away on the lid. If you fold it down, you can use the top as a direct view ironsight for quick shots, though you'll obviously need to focus and do your metering ahead of time, so it's wonky if you're shooting at a wide aperture.
[editline]24th September 2011[/editline]
found it, it's referred to as a "sportsfinder", for obvious reasons.

I actually did know about that, but I forgot about the focusing beforehand. And I also have the metered porrofinder for it if I want to view in that manner, also lets me focus right then.
Just tried it now, the catch for the hood is worn, and won't hold the front part down. Dammit
I'm sure there's a simple fix for that
Climbed this today:

Will get the roll developed tomorrow. I'm exhaust.
Located within the Sky Lakes Wilderness the 5.5 mile long trail to the summit of Mount McLoughlin winds through rocky terrain. After it leaves the Pacific Crest Trail (at a point a little over a mile from the parking lot), the trail ascends through a boulder strewn forest. Watch for blazed trees and a well worn path. Above timberline, marks spray-painted on boulders are unreliable. Once you reach the main ridge, follow the ridge line up to the summit. Watch your footing and avoid the loose scree on the left. Each year a number of people become disoriented or lost on the way back down, usually due to coming down a different route than they used when climbing the mountain. Tempting as it may seem to descent the sandy, cinder slope, the lower you get down this slope, the further away you become from the trail -- and once down to the timberline, it's a 2-mile strenuous boulder-hopping hike back east to the trail. The proper way to descend is simply to follow the same ridge-line route that took you to the summit.

It looks like it's just a small metal tab I have to bend a bit. Should be simple, maybe tomorrow I'll fix it.
Just take pictures. Who cares what the name is or who else uses it and whether it's a 'trend'. If you produce a nice picture, party. If not, figure it out.
I say this, but at the same time disregard all photos taken with toy camera cellphone apps.
@krazipanda: Get that Yeshica outta hiding!!
@Killerelf12: Ur gnarly. $$$ Go shoot!

Ok I have used the Zenit TTL for about 7 or 8 rolls now and I have three to be developed, But so far I have liked most of the results and its nice to feel like the camera is well made and won't break easily.
So heres a few shots

A small chunk based tutorial on how to understand everything a camera can do and what to do with it.
Yay, fixed both the catches for my camera. Now my problem is I keep looking at different lenses I could possibly buy for it...
Anyone have experience cleaning up a lens? Like haze/slight fungus? I saw one being sold for parts for that reason, but apparently it's a fully functioning lens mechanically... If it's not crazy difficult I might go for it, as it saves about $100...
God damn it, there are no operational photo stores to develop my photos in this small ass town. They're all closed sundays.
Should I maybe try a Walgreens of Fredmeyer?

walgreens will develop and print, but don't expect spectacular results. I got a black and white roll developed at a walgreens and it came back with colored chromatic aberration.

I went to fred meyer to develop my film and put the results on CD. I could always rescan the negatives, right?
[editline]25th September 2011[/editline]
I'm at freddy's right now waiting for it to be developed.
you can always rescan negs, their print process is what botches the most.

I'm starting to dislike this film.
because it gives people hitlerstaches?
it actually doesn't look that bad, why don't you like 'that' film?
Would anyone happen to have a nice guide to filters I can read?

filters as in color filters for b/w, or just filters all in general, like warming/cooling, polarized, etc? I could explain some basics
So my campus doesn't have a dark room, where do you guys develop your film?
