On the shutter release button theres red dots if you line them up, that might be been the problem
open the back when cocking the shutter, you should see the shutter curtains moving across and so should the spool.
Lined them up, and I can hear the shutter move, slightly. The problem is now though, that the curtain isn't moving at all, and the mirror in the front doesn't move when I press the shutter either.

Well that was the problem I used to have all the time
Have you opened the back to watch it move
You could do what I always do when I need something zenit related answered.

it is now fixed.

So it works now.
Anyway does anyone know a 50/58mm prime with decent sharpness and no auto pin for M42 screwmount for less than £15.
Or should I just get an Industar 50 for £14
Vivitar 50mm f/1.8 is decent enough, has an auto/manual selector if that works for you. Around $15 USD on ebay, shouldn't be too much more over there.

Doesnt seem to exist here in England
Problems keep stacking on with the Zenit, however, I think this one will be a lot easier to fix. Just need a little guidance.

Alright, so the image pretty much speaks for itself. Every other exposure, the mirror gets stuck beneath a screw poking out from below the mirror. No idea why that screw is that, if it's there to hold on the mirror, if it's out too far, etc. But whenever the mirror gets caught underneath that screw, I need to manually pull the mirror out from under the screw. SO, how should I go about fixing this minor issue?
look for zenit repair guides corresponding to your model, see if you can find some graphics involving that screw's placement. I highly doubt it should be out there, so see if you can find some small pliers and twist it back into its hole. If it resists movement, wait until you can triple check what the hell it's for, heh
all else fails, hit few times with great quality soviet wrench
or i can just hit it a few times on a tree like bhazard. ;b
i think i'll just wait for communistcat to come back online, and see if I can't get him to take a picture of this inside of his zenit ttl. i'll use that as a reference for whenever i decide to fuck with mine again. :>
i got a roll of holga color 35mm just to see what it turns out like knowing it well won't be worth the price, only to find out it's 640 iso
what the fuck is this, do i just set it to 400 and have it overexpose half a stop?

You could set it to 800, use a wide as fuck aperture, and a much slower shutter speed. I'm gonna guess you're using your AE-1, so I'd say 1/30th - 1/250th should work, depending on the lighting of course.
edit: maybe not a wide as fuck aperture, unless you're shooting for a shallow DOF. i'm thinking maybe f/11 and below will work?
That screw is supposed to hold the mirror up, as for repair guides
http://tomtiger.home.xs4all.nl/zenrep/zenquick.html#q1
Its "I'm getting out of focus shots! With every lens!
And the range measured on my Zenit SLR is way out. " that heading and he says what its for and why it might be changed

So push it back till it just rests under the mirror and then it should work.

ah, interesting
just be wary of how much you move it, since apparently this affects the focus of your viewfinder and you may over/underfocus your shots

and if you do just turn the screw into or out of the holder which is sort of like this shape > until its focused properly

Thank you very much. The Zenit is now back to functioning properly. Can't wait to go shoot my first roll. x3

Good if theres ever a problem I will just refer you to Tom Tiger, he is really helpful with most things zenit related
Also industar 50 arrives at the end of the week so I have that to mess around with soon.
Also someone said why have such overlaps in your kit, its because I like to have my TTL loaded with either B&W or color and the E will be loaded with the other. Anyone think thats a bit odd. And I might load that Pentax MX with some 800 speed color just in case.

I do that with a few of my cameras. The AE-1 has color in it right now, while the Zenit has Ilford Delta 100 in it.

i think mine needs to have this adjusted, because the viewfinder seems to suggest that none of my lenses can focus to anywhere near infinity

Think you guys will enjoy these shots more than any other thread. I shot these with my AE-1, pictures date all the way back to July. Found the roll under my bed not too long ago, and had them developed today. These are my favs from the roll.
Hey guys found a film camera in Narnia (moms closet :P) and well I have been using digital since I was interested in photography from my uncle and mom so why did I make the change? Well your pictures and how you say you prepare for shots ect its so much more different to digital! So I will be uploading a pic or two from my first roll (as long as its not rubbish.)
Camera: Vivitar V2000 from my grandpa (died from cancer :C)

My grandfather gave me this awhile back, but I totally forgot about it until I came across it while cleaning my desk drawers. I know pretty much nothing about it.

edit: Just read about it online, apparently it was introduced to the market in 1955 and a guy named Charles L. Bronson used the same type of camera to film the JFK assassination.
that is a BEAST of an 8mm
that is a BEAST of an 8mm
It would be pretty interesting to order some film for it, but I have no idea how I would go about developing it and/or transferring it digitally. Any recommendations? Or is it just not reasonable.

[editline]11th January 2012[/editline]
just out of interest, has anyone ever had a problem with an old camera where the paint on it is sticky? i got a zorki 4, and all the parts on it that are painted black are sticky; if you touch it, sometimes some of the paint stays on your hands, and i can even easily scratch it off using my nail. not very cool.
Got my industar-50 today
Looks tiny on a Zenit-E

So.. Just developed my first roll of film from my Canonnet 28! Got pretty happy with the results, even though alot of pictures where very underexposed because the battery didn't work, so the shutter speed was stuck on 1/30, or out of focus since i'm not very used to manual focusing..
But i must say, there really is a special fealing to shooting with film and I'm absolutelly gonna keep doing it, hopefully buying a canon AE-1 in the near future.

Fujicolor Superia REALA 100 ISO / Exakta Varex IIb / P. Angénieux Rétrofocus 28mm f3.5-22 lense (I'll try to provide some pictures of the last two soon).
Not really happy with the scans but fuck it, I'm buying a Reflecta Crystal very soon...
