loving that station... and I could swear that was Colin Mochrie sleepin' there.
Not quite happy with this. Love the scene, but not happy with the framing.
Should have crouched down and taken it in landscape to fit in the guy on the bike and the kid sitting by the step-ladder.

So I'm going on an outing with my Photography group from College tomorrow, and we're using our film cameras. I'm really excited, I've never shot with a film SLR, here's to a good roll of B&W! :D

This brought up some very old memories and made my spine tingle like crazy, what the hell
I love all you guys' photos. I am now inspired to dust off my camera and get back into photography.
Last 2 weeks i got most of my rolls developed and scanned them.
I still need to upload most of them, but i'll show some pictures of the first roll i uploaded; some Portra 160VC that was expired in 2007.
Oh man, I do love the colour of Portra 160VC. Lens used for most of these pictures is the Canon FD 55mm f/1.2 SSC Aspherical and the nFD 85 1.2L.

Such brilliant work in this thread. BlazeFresh, those are all such phenomenal shots. 'east, west, home is best' in particular.
I recently inherited my dad's old Canon F-1 with a few lenses- a 50mm f/1.4, an f/4 zoom lens and an f/4 200mm telephoto lens (all appear to be Canon-branded). I've owned a 550D along with a nifty fifty for a while now, I'm quite interested in getting into film shooting. I'm not a complete newbie to photography- I have a basic grasp of the technicalities of shooting- full manual controls are no problem. The autofocus on my 50mm f/1.8 broke some time ago, so adjusting to the lack of autofocus would similarly be a non-issue.
There's something intensely beautiful & surreal about the tone of analog photographs, it'd be nice to get a feel for shooting with film just for that aspect alone. My dad has a really nice negative scanner I can use, so that's a start at least. The lenses all look fine at a quick glace through the viewfinder when mounted on the F-1, although the viewfinder is pretty dirty and the lenses have bits of dust trapped under their UV filters (which seem to be stuck after having been screwed on so tightly for ten years or so). The focus and aperture rings all work fine, and the film loading mechanism seems to be in order.
I have zero knowledge of shooting or developing with film- any tips for beginners anyone in this thread wouldn't mind sharing? I generally prefer to avoid using a forum's userbase as google substitute, but I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment and any general advice would be much appreciated.

It appears that was your first post, welcome to the photography forum. Thats a great camera to have inherited, with a nice range of lenses so you'll have a lot to work with
Many people enjoy using film for the look it gives, and it's pretty much unmatched with digital. It's something really rewarding and refreshing that i think you'll appreciate when switching from digital.
No problem that you don't know much about it, thats part of the fun. Shooting it won't be a problem for you however developing you'll need to take it down to you local developing lab and ask for develop only, and then of course you can scan them in yourself with your fathers scanner.
Good luck!
Cheers for the welcome, BlazeFresh. :)
I'm a long-time lurker, haha.
Does it particularly matter where you get film developed? I've seen a few prints of colour film some friends' have had developed locally and they look terrible. Almost as if in addition to the chemical process being off, something more has been messed with- the white balance is terrible, there's distracting colour casts and obvious oversaturation.
I suppose I'd have to find a decent developing place before I do anything. I do have access to my university's darkroom, though, if I want to learn B&W developing. What colour film would you recommend as a first-buy? Something 400 ISO for the versatility, or something less grainy? What film were you using for the photos of your most recent post, if you don't mind me asking?
Thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated.
No problem.
Im not really well versed in the developing process, but I'm sure it can have an effect who you get them developed with, just try to use a trusted place I suppose. Yeah black and white is fine to develop yourself, however ive never done it.
For 400 ISO I use Kodak portra 400 however that might be a little pricey for your first lot of film. The most recent lot of photos I posted in here was Superia 200 film.
Hope I helped!
Photography was so much more magical back in the film era.
So..I got my first roll developed today. I'm almost afraid to post my photos here.
I got them developed at a local CVS (as prints which wasn't the best idea in hindsight :v: Next time I'll get them on CDs..), I was a bit worried they'd come out badly. They didn't come out too bad, I guess. White balance seems off on some of them. I'll only post the ones I liked the most, the rest are kind of boring, or are multiple shots of the same scene...And yes, I scanned them myself.

These are all unedited besides the image size. They were all taken with a Pentax ME Super w/ the 50mm f/2 prime lens that came with it. 200 ISO Fujicolor film.
So..Yeah. Crits? v:v:v
Just got my first roll of film back.
they all suck

i know how you feel, comrade.
my first few rolls of film didn't expose properly.
they were all either black, or super over exposed.
The ones of mine that came out properly weren't very sharp. The ones that are sharp are blue
The ones of mine that came out properly weren't very sharp. The ones that are sharp are blue
There's an easy solution for that, buy a Nikon F6, your photos will be perfect afterwards.
But seriously what kind of camera do you have? Does it have a split focusing screen?
If the lens you are using is not super fast (big aperture like 1.4, 1.8) or you stop it down a bit you could try scale focusing.
For the blueness it most likely has to do with the lights in the location you took the photo in, you may want to try an orange filter to adjust you white balance. (unfortunately is not as easy as digital)
All said and done tho it's just a matter of practice (both focusing, exposure guessing, white balancing, etc.), keep trying man you will do just fine in no time if you stick to it, it's only your first roll after all!.
EDIT: Actually the blue tint could be that you used a film balanced for artificial lights outside, that will make the photos more blue.
It's hard to tell tho without seeing the photos/having more details.
I'm using a minolta xg1 with a vivitar series 1 and a rokkor lens. I'll check the actual focal lengths and try to upload some photos in a bit. Thanks for your support and suggestions
So..As much as I like the prime lens on my camera, I've been wanting to get something with variable zoom to just kinda..have. Unfortunately, I'm very (VERY) limited on budget...
Would anyone have any recommendations on a cheap (lol) k-mount lens?

Something tells me that your lightseals need to be replaced. Only time i got blue photos was when i accidently opened the film door of my Olympus OM-2n. So check your lightseals; they might be bad.

Tokina 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 pump zoom K mount.
Shouldn't be too expensive.
I got one with my Pentax ME Super. Should be a a OK lens.
shot some film in sedona yesterday, looking forward to getting it developed :)
Anyone know where to get replacement light seals for an AE-1P? My last prints have light leaks in them and I'm assuming the light seals (is that what they're called?) are worn out and stuff.

I found some foam light seal material on ebay, used it for the back of my Mamiya C3, got a 10"x10" piece for 12 bucks. However, I haven't gotten to see how well it's worked yet.

The camera is proper mint and I've got it for 40£.
I wanted an older all manual SLR but I decided to go with this because it had multiple exposures capabilities AND it works with my Nikon G lens. (only because of the missing aperture ring, I still use manual focus and exposure guessing)
I guess I'll get a cheap Rangefinder later on as an all manual film camera.
Thoughts on these? first ever film scans. Cropped a bit because when I scanned (at 3200dpi woah 400mb files) it showed thin black bars at the side. I'll get a hang of it eventually. Have a lot more MF but they weren't very good. Lots of 35mm to scan.
