I have never shot film before. I have a Canon AE-1 and a nifty fifty, might have to try it out.
What kind of film do I use?
Cheap Fuji Superia 400.

this picture makes me feel like a creeper.
Sorry for the silly question but I'm finding 36exp rolls too long, if I had a medium format camera with interchangeable backs it would be perfect I would have less exposures and I could change the film whenever I please but as of now I don't.
So anybody knows if there is any 24exp B&W ISO800? (400, 1600 or even 3200 are good too)
200 or less would be ok if they are really the only option left.
I'd take 12exp even. (even less likely to be out there but you never know)
I can't seem to find any so I'm guessing they make only 36exp for this kind of film these days, I hope I'm wrong.
Thanks.
EDIT: Dammit too soon, seems like Ilford HP5, XP2 and Delta 400 are all available in 24exp.
So let's see if we can find anything over 400.
Went urbexing again today (thats three sundays in a row) and I used some Portra 160, I'll be getting the roll back on friday.
Velvia... a fun, outrageously expensive endeavour.

Love the blue
One thing that I find unique to it is that you can bump the vibrance and saturation a bunch, and it still retains a natural look.
So none of my Canon AE-1 Program pictures came out.
Some were completely black, and the rest had nothing on them.

Can you give us more details? What kind of film, did you do it yourself, etc?
are you sure you put the film in correctly? i have a tough time winding it on my camera, you really have to work with it. when the back door is open make sure it catches on that little dot on the right side, and the film is rotating clockwise (as in it hooks into the rotating thing, in a kind of opposite pattern from what you might expect)

I am pretty sure it was catching, I bought some more and am going to try again, I made sure all the mechanisms inside the camera were in fact working so I figure it had to be error on my part.
if you can get some dummy rolls of film from goodwill (take them out of old cameras) to check to see if everything is working alright with the advancement until you are confident enough to be doing it absolutely correctly

I think I have got it this time. I have read the manual and watched dozens of videos demonstrating how to do absolutely everything needed for success.
If this next batch is "blank" then I can assume the camera is somehow at fault. The only thing I can possibly think of is light leaking in from the rear seal. However it appears to be in good condition, the camera is rather worn, I can tell it's been through hell and back.
Light leaks wouldn't leave it entirely blank. You should be all set to go
my brother bought one of these. scanned a print i feel dirty

We went to the aviation museum, the beach, the jetty, spent six hours out. Doing it with friends that enjoy it too really helps.
Got my roll of portra 160 back today. Turns out I adjusted my zenits meter to about right.
So here are some photos,
So lets start with a self portrait(its had some editing):

Now Portra 160 is a nice film, the colours are as true as I remember but I don't see why it has a very high stock price compared to lets say Ektar or Fuji Superia.
Finally scanned my roll I took with my little folder, apparently the crap on my lens didn't affect the image as much as I'd thought. Though I hadn't realized how much of an effect lens coatings have on glare, most of the pictures are fogged to all hell.

Did get two pictures I liked though. Film is Ektar 100, did a little editing to tone down the blue tinge from glare.
After months without film, I finally got my hands on the Kodak Ektrar 100. Only got 4 though. Gonna stock up on at least 10 of them and a bunch of portras. How much do Ektrar cost online? I bought them for $8 per roll.
Also, I'm back at the place I got my AE-1, would love to get more film cameras but I'm not really sure what to get.
Look what I just got

$8 is a lot, I'm pretty sure I got a 5 pack of medium format Ektar for like $24, and the 35mm is only around $5... This is from B&H.
I just got three rolls of Ektar online they cost £3.25 a roll which is great. Normally they go for £4.50 online
I have a lot of film negatives as well as photos. I should upload them
