To be honest, I think the cheap roll I shot looks alright.
But it wasn't that "memories" film...
I completely agree that cheapo film can look alright, I've shot a whole heap of ultramax and I was happy with it. Thing is, once you shoot a roll of ektar/portra, you realise how much better it is. The colours / grain / tones are just better
Yes, of course.
Although, I don't see the point when shooting 35mm to splash out on a film that's superior too much.
I have something embarrassing to say... The last 120 film I shot was portra. I've it'd been lying around for about a year, and I haven't had my yashica-mat working (can't afford to get it fixed, or buy a new one)...
So I wasted it in my Holga.
Still, got some nice shots, but I couldn't bare to have it lying around any longer. Just needed to shoooooot it :D
This was probably the only decent photo I got from the roll:

The store near me gives an insane discount to students at either high school in my town.
I don't know exactly how much but I've managed to get film with my change from lunch.
I have to buy all of my film online because the two camera stores where I live charge ridiculous prices for film. The cheapest I could buy a roll of Ektar for was $16. Meanwhile, Kodak is selling it on their website for about $3.50 a roll (although it's on sale). They also want $6.50 for a roll of Superia.
Hoping my Zenit 11 will arrive soon.
Did you manage to get your Zenit? I was looking at buying this camera and wondered if you've got any shots from it yet.
Would it be a better idea to order five rolls of Kodak Portra 400, or 7 rolls of Kodak Ektar 100?
The Portra is only sold in five packs, and those are about as expensive as 7 rolls of Ektar 100.
(36 exp. on each roll)
Probably going to be shooting a lot outdoor, but it's always nice to be able to shoot inside as well.
f/2 lens.
I'd say the 5x 400,
Though the 100 will be fine for a nice sunny day.
Get the 400 and pick up a neutral density filter for your lens.
There have been times at ISO 100 where I had to go at least 1/6400.
400 would be impossible in those situations without a neutral density filter.

Oh, by the way bopie, I like this.

Especially since the ME Super only goes up to 1/2000.
Finally sent in my color slide film. Will take 3 days to process because they ship it out. Then expect some film photos!
Film does have a charm about it, I love it!
What would be a decent film camera to buy for a beginner? I've never had a DSLR before, just compacts, and DSLRs are way too expensive :smith:
Also, how much does a decent roll of film cost and how long would it last?
Thanks

The Pentax ME Super is brilliant, and it doesn't have too many things to learn about it.
It also has an "auto" mode which would be similar to aperture priority on modern cameras.
A roll of film usually costs around £3-8 depending on quality, ISO, amount of exposures on the film and similar.
You can usually get rolls with 24 or 36 exposures.

Awesome, thank you :buddy:
Would the picture quality of the ME Super be similar to that of low/mid-end DSLRs?
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Also, is ebay okay or should I get it from a camera shop or something?

Picture quality when using film is much less dependent on the camera, and way more on the film itself.
The lens is also important.
I used ebay myself.
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Also a good lens would be the Pentax M 50mm f1.7
I personally would say it's better than a cheapo DSLR.
Here's my set from my ME Super,

I need to get a new one though, my current one is fucked.

Ah ok, thanks, I've found some good deals for the camera with the f1.7 lens
So what would be an alright film to use? And about how much does it cost to get the photos developed?
Thanks again!
I use kodak ektar 100 / kodak portra 400, they will give you the best results (not sure about the fuji equiv.)
they go for about $5 a roll on Freestyle http://freestylephoto.biz/
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
you get developing done locally, I go to a minilab that does it for $2.50 a roll, I then scan them (the negatives) into the computer myself.

Cool,
So when you get it developed, do they put it onto a CD/other digital format or do you have to scan them onto your computer? And can you actually do anything with the scanned negatives or are they just there for archiving?
Thanks
When I scan them I scan them into my computer and get a jpeg file out of it, just like if you took a jpg off a memory card. I just get the negatives because that's the cheapest way to get it done.

So can you, like, 'develop' the negatives on the computer when they're in digital format?
no... the developing process is putting the film through chemicals, the lab does that for you. After you scan them you get a jpeg file exactly the same as you would off of you memory card, you can then open it in photoshop / lightroom / whatever and do further editing.

Ah, I thought the negatives were the little black and white images, not the actually developed colour ones. That makes more sense now.
Thanks for all the help :buddy:
well, the developed images *are* the "little black and white ones", these are developed http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3131/5776539738_b7f8d44c11.jpg you need a scanner that can scan 'transparencies' (aka film).

Ohh right ok, thanks
So then the actual big versions are called prints I assume?
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
Also, how much does a film scanner cost, approximately?
ywap, the big ones are prints. This is the scanner currently sitting on my desk http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/496399-REG/Epson_B11B189011_Perfection_V500_Flatbed_Photo.html I have scanned roughly 60 rolls through it in the last 6 months, so if the lab had been charging me $5 a roll for that scanning I'd have forked out $300 by now, about $50 more than the total price of the scanner (after shipping, etc)
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
some labs might charge $10/roll for scanning, in which case I would have save $300 +

yikes, that's more expensive than the camera!
are there different qualities of scanner, by any chance, or can I get the cheapest one?
I have a spare scanner sitting on my floor actually... If I tested it, etc, would you be interested in taking that off my hands for the price of the shipping? (probably around$50) , it's this one here http://www.nikon.com.au/productitem.php?pid=63-7d71bd903f

That's very kind of you! :buddy:
I would love to have it, I just need to finalise the decision to get the camera and stuff, but it will be in about 2 weeks (after my exams) so if you've still got it, I'd be happy to take it, but don't hold on to it specially for me because this is all still quite undecided
Thanks
heh, it's been sitting on the floor of my bedroom for the last 6 months, it's not in any great demand.
[editline]1st June 2011[/editline]
well, I'll open it up, anyone who legitimately wants it can tell me so in this thread, sold for $50 incl shipping to whoever puts money into my paypal first paypal@haslehurst.net
