Looks to me like you're just exposing it wrong and have the wrong white balance, better lighting/exposure/white balance/focus and there is no reason photographing it won't be good
probs right, I will have another go, any suggestions I have never been a person for lighting.
lamps left and right so there isn't any glare, lens hood if you want to. Also, defuse the lamps if you can. Shoot in raw and use a sharp lens at f/5.6-8 for maximum sharpness :)
I dunno what camera or w/e you are using to photograph it but to photograph negatives I use a reversed 50mm lens so that the negative nearly almost fills up the frame on my 60D (1.6x crop)
That may be the case actually, since I bought it the lightmeter hasn't worked and I shrugged it off because I'm pretty good at metering myself and that's why I never changed the batteries. May have to go and get some replacements. And it isn't that, I have forced it once before by accident when i didn't realise I was at the end of a roll but when I removed the film and put a new roll in it all worked fine again.
Definitely try a battery, if not something is probably just jammed up. And that kind of forcing will only wind up breaking your film, not a big deal (except you have to figure out how to get the film out).
Right guys, I've replaced the batteries and still nothing... gonna take the film out and let my dad have a look at it
I am using a 50mm on a Sony A350 its an old camera sony dont even make it any more and thanks for the help guys
then it should work for negatives and other ~35mm stuff
My dad has taken a look at it: the winding arm won't wind, the shutter button does nothing, the bit where the film gets wound onto during shooting works fine (turning one turns the other too, no friction), the mirror is down meaning that that's not jammed and according to my dad the mechanisms for the winding arm working are in full working order so we've concluded that it's the shutter that is broken.. any advice? or am I just going to have to get a new body?
New body
okay, any suggestions for a PK-mount body? i've heard good things about pentax k1000's [editline]6th January 2013[/editline] Pageking content: more found here
PK lenses can fit on pretty wide range of bodies with a simple adaptor (canon, mayima, olympus 4/3, contax, leica, etc) Pentax K1000 is pretty good, well I haven't used it much but my friend says it is.
K1000 is pretty good, I would try and stick with anything that's actually a Pentax body, they are much better for aperture control and metering. I have a Pentax Mv (it broke) and it was pretty cool, small and I think it was an aperture priority body only.
Won an auction for a Pentax K1000 with a 28-80mm Lens, should be here by Friday :)
I'm picking up a couple of rolls of Provia 400X on Wednesday and plan to go camping for a sunrise shoot with a friend. I do have one question however. I intend on shooting the set on my Canonet QL17 (40mm f/1.7) but am planning on using my OM-D with Pana 20mm (40mm equiv. f/1.7) for metering. I understand the light transmittance will be the same at the same aperture settings, but to gauge the DoF I'll be getting, how should I meter the OM-D?

That's about the same way the Canonet meters.
Use center weighted metering. That's about the same way the Canonet meters.
Ok I will do that, but I'm not overly fussed on the metering mode of the OM-D as I'll probably go off how a test shot turns out. I'm more concerned with getting the DoF right, because I'd hate to shoot a whole roll only to find that it's either too shallow or too deep. [editline]7th January 2013[/editline] After a little googling, I think I found what I'm looking for: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/digital-camera-sensor-size.htm 2x crop factor on the OM-D means I can set the shot up on digital and just bump the Canonet aperture 2 stops down and adjust the shutter speed to suit. (If I'm getting any of this wrong, someone please call me out on it)
Yeah it's generally agreed upon a good rule of thumb for DoF is as follows for FF comparison APS-C: 1.5x length and approx 1 stop for DoF (50mm f1.8 becomes 75mm f2.4) 4/3rds: 2x length and approx 2 stop for DoF (50mm f1.8 becomes 100mm f3.5) And this just means in terms of equivalence. If you were to take two pictures using those aperture and focal lengths on each camera, that's what it would take for them to look basically the same. So your OMD will show you (using the 20mm lens wide open) what the canonet will look like at f3.5 for depth of field. This is not an exact formula, but a good rule of thumb to go by.
Ok awesome. It'll be light enough to not need anything wider than f/3.5 anyway and I can just generally play around with it a bit now that I know what I'm working with. Thanks for the clarification. I'll post the results when it's all done and dusted.
Him1411 that first shot is stellar.
I got my first roll through the Canonet developed the other day too, so here's 2 shots that I liked from it (the rest were either family Christmas shots or me getting used to the focussing (thus misfocussed)) Untitled by HiddenMyst, on Flickr Untitled by HiddenMyst, on Flickr I've been having a few issues with colour spaces again when uploading to Flickr. I save them out as sRGB, but it still messes the brightness and contrast up on upload, so I give up on trying to fix that issue.
are you using photoshop? if you are, try view > uncheck "proof colours"
Yeah I normally switch it to monitor colour anyway because I found that was throwing me heaps when I'd edit for one colour space and it would be totally out in the saved jpeg. But the problems I'm having now are when I actually upload the image. It looks fine when I view it in picasa, but on Flickr, it seems to bump the contrast up, so I lose a lot of the subtle colours in the darker areas. It's most obvious in the silhouette shot, because you can only make out the top edge of the strawberry, whereas the jpeg on my computer lets you see the whole thing. I tend not to have these issues as much when I export from lightroom, so I think it's mainly a problem with how I have photoshop configured.
Him1411 that first shot is stellar.
Thankyou so much man, means a lot to get compliments about my photography from other photographers. Also, Pentax K1000 arrived with a 28-80mm f/3.5-22 :)
that is a very pretty camera
It's gorgeous, isn't it!
here's a rather massive film dump from several rolls that i have shot over the last year. i finally got a film tray for my epson v500 so i was able to scan these (along with some advice from frag that helped extremely), and rather than just drag it out i figured i'd post all at once. you might have seen some of them before scanned poorly, but the results here are much better and i'm happier with the look. the cameras used for this were a minolta 7000, minolta 9xi, canon ae-1p, and an olympus om1n. almost every shot is taken with a 50mm in the respective mount for that system. and yes some of them are grainy, working on it currently. so here's a year of my life in film form.
