Amusing excerpts from the 2000 edition of the DK "FUTURE" book. My, how far we've come in 10 years.

We exceeded all expectations in computing power and fell short in space exploration.
Get on it, Skylon
humans on mars in 2014?
ha
SpaceX motherfucker.
what is it with the late 90s obsession with videophones and virtual reality, we perfected the technology only to find out that it was shit when used in the context described by that book
also I love how most of those things can be accomplished through a single mobile phone now

We've had videophones for 6/7 years and the technology for them a couple of years more.
Where the fuck is my virtual reality?
In 10 years time they'll look back on things like the iPad and see it as a limited and useless device.
In-fact, we're already doing that now just a year later!

A lot of universities had VR programs (many still do) but after a while we realized how useless the technology is at the moment. We still have many problems in the world that really separates people (African famine & differing currencies), I'm sure once we fix these we can effectively use VR tech.
Why do visions of the future always contain tight tracksuits?
I want a moon city, dammit.
Get on in, astronauts.
Screw the moon, we're due to land on Mars in 3 years!
^ Oh yeah,Total Recall here we come!
Nanobots the size of spiders?
I wonder how they control all the fires.
I have read this book
It says we should have one worldwide currency by now
Oh past
You so optimistic
At the time most countries had far happier relations than the strained ones most share now. But, worldwide currency does exist right now, its just barely gotten off the ground, and the world isn't really ready to use it as fully intended yet.
i own this book :)
I read this book in 4th grade. It was so badass I read it 30 times.
Eh, why is that book filled with so many illogical designs.

And that video phone.
That defies the idea of a good design. With those kind of buttons it severely limits function.
I love books like these! They're always right about some technological advances, then the rest are just guesses or completely wrong. Also, that toy video phone.

Nope, sorry, that's been dead in the water for a long time.

Happier relations in 2000?
Lol you crazy.
In the future, we'll be able to record our music on the tiniest of casette tapes!
A few of the things are gimmicky shite. Why would they assume that something like an "emotion container" would become popular? Yes they might exist now, but no one uses them because it's a rubbish idea.

One of those things that are a great ideas on paper, but really shitty when put into use.
The emotion container and virtual pets look like they're made of some kinda awesome plush material, wish we had that stuff right now.
We'd be better off with one, maybe two languages and one currency.
Also one country, one big pile of money that cycles between all the people that live their lives one (billion) at a time.
I think

more parts=easier to brake
The emotion containers look like an early prototype of the fleshlight.
It's funny to see what people have been imagining about the future..
I'm surprised flying cars wasn't included
Where the fuck is my household robot to do all my shit.
Damn book
So sad to look at this, still no virtual reality
So sad to look at this, still no virtual reality
We have simulated reality. Close enough.
I want those glasses that overlay Google Maps data over your view of the street.
My reality is augmented.

Nobody wants to buy a helmet so VR gaming suddenly gets a shit ton harder. I think the closest and cheapest they ever got was the Forte VFX1 which supported Half-Life and Quake but at $900 each I would be weary about buying.
We could of had Video Phones too as early as the 90's if AT&T had not decided to sell their Model 2500 phone for $1200 each.
