I'm excited for the movie but I wanted a little bit more than just being stuck in a giant set of apartments. It reminds me of The Raid way too much.
It's safer than doing something elaborate not to mention the film is more of a character study than anything. If they made it bigger it could have fallen on its ass before it got out of the door but at least for now it can hold up some hope.

New trailer
[editline]25th August 2012[/editline]
[sp]oh god I think they showed Mama's interrogation and death in the trailer. Shouldn't be a surprise but it seems to be rather bad form to do so[/sp]

Ah, fuck. Thanks for pointing that out.
SA reviewed Dredd and if they are to be believed, it may very well be the best action movie/comic book movie of the year.
The RT reviews keep coming in and there's not a single negative one yet.
I am officially hella hyped.
better than TDKR or avengers? yeah no
Urban landscapes are pretty nice, but what happened to the mile high crowded look of the Stallone version and comics?

33 reviewers on rt out of 33 give it fresh
Jesus, these reviews are completely not what I expected.
I don't get it.
It looks horrible!
Betting on either the early reviewers being paid off or maybe the people in charge of the trailers just suck horribly at their job.

I'd say trailers. This isn't being marketed all that well and from one review I saw, this movie is supposed to be an in-depth character analysis of Dredd more than anything.
Karl Urban kind of owns, but man he's made some shitty career choices.
You would be forgiven for thinking he's a bad actor, which he's definitely not.
you know why this movie is going to be better than the Stallone one?
[sp]no Rob Schneider.[/sp]
Just got back from seeing it. It really is as good as the reviews said it was, definitely the best film I've seen this year. Better than the Dark Knight Rises AND the Avengers films, honestly. Loved it loved it loved it.

Holy shit what
Now, I'm excited.
I'm not going to lie, the trailer in the OP was absolute wank, and the uniform isn't too great either, the helmet looks... way too chunky for Karl, where as it fit Stallone perfectly. Not too sure I'm keen on the Olivia character either.
But when there are this many positive reviews on sites like RT, it's hard to ignore and not get atleast a little bit excited for it. Odeon, here I come...

Easy there chewy, reserve judgement until you see it yourself.
Six more reviews are in.
Four positive, two negative, certified fresh.

I don't know where they're getting the idea that this is a remake though, by that logic Batman Begins is a remake of Batman '89.

It's a reinterpretation no matter what way you look at it. Guess the meaning of remake and reinterpretation have been lost amongst reviewers now.
how can this movie be that good. just fucking how

also RT is a thumbs up thumbs down thing so even if all the reviews say "eeeeh it's okay" it gets a high score. see the average rating

What he said ^ Fantastic film! The music is great too cant wait to get the OST.
Saw this on Saturday and thought it was really awesome. Its a super stylish, super gory action flick with a fantastic sound track. The 3D effects actually looked impressive too, in particular the scenes featuring the 'slo-mo' drug.

Since I got my cinema card and see films for basically no charge I've stopped watching trailers. They give false ideas on what the move is about. For example Lawless is a great drama easily one of the best, but the trailers make it seems like some violent action focused film which it isn't trying to be. So the reviews end up being shocking because it's not what people expect.
Unless I'm already anticipating a film now I don't bother with trailers as they're not nearly long enough to get a sense of the film.
Ended up seeing it yesterday on a whim and I really liked it. I wasn't really aware of it's existence but me and my friends wanted to do something so we just looked at what movies were out and that seemed to be the best one. It actually turned out to be pretty good.
I loved the Avengers and TDKR and it's fair to say that Dredd definitely stands on it's own legs. When you compare the budget of the Avengers (~$220m) and TDKR (~$250m) to Dredd (~$45m) you can tell that they spent the money well. I don't think they wanted it to compete with the other movies because they knew it wouldn't win so releasing it now was the sensible thing to do but that doesn't mean to say it's not a good film. It is. For what might be seen as a generic action movie, the plot is ok, the action is great, the gore is lovely and Dredd is such a fucking badass.
what the fuck good reviews?
i wasn't even expecting much, i just figured it'd be stupid cheesy fun. like the comics.
Saw this on Friday day it came out and it fuckin owned
best action film of the year imo. might see it again. I get why a lot of people are suspicious about it, I was too, but it's really really good. Karl Urban's a brilliant Judge Dredd and the girl who plays alongside him gives a whole new perspective to the character. And basing almost all the film inside this big megacomplex was a really cool idea.
I was worried they'd overplay the use of slow-mo and slow motion, but they didn't (plus it looked fucking amazing- 1000fps cameras to film it, not cgi which was good because practical effects are always better than computer effects)
4 star film imo
Never realised there was a thread on this film, nevermind so much of a discussion over the ratings.
I saw it last Friday(release date in UK) and loved every second of it. The 3D is mighty impressive (The whole movie was filmed with it in mind I believe?) and it really adds depth of field, with some shots even feeling like things are coming towards you, unlike how most 3D films go.
The action is brutal and nearly non stop, with a few big action scenes littered throughout a spattering of small encounters. There's a few humorous moments, and all of the main characters are brought to life with great acting. Dredd is captured perfectly in this adaptation.
As already pointed out, the slo-mo scenes are beautifully captured, but I wont go into detail with them, as they are definitely best to be seen with your own eyes.
Possibly my favourite film of the year. Sure, the Dark Knight Rises, and the Avengers were great blockbusters, but that was to be expected. I went to see this with low-ish expectations, and left with a smile on my face.
More than worth it.
Saw it last night.
Fucking. Amazing. The film didn't try to be more than what it said on the can. Dredd and a Rookie are trapped in an Apartment Block with the mob, the only way is up. Character was developed well, the aesthetic was great, the Slo-Mo scenes were well done, Action was perfect, Dredds Chin was fantastic, the humour was just right. Spot on film, 9/10 would watch again.
Uh oh, rating is dropping on RT.
