Yeah, they gave Dark Knight Rises like 87% so clearly I shouldn't base my opinion on their reviews, since I think it's worth a 60% tops.
It was neat as heck. The 3D was kind of cheap so I would say go see it in 2D but in a certain scene early one where blood spills over the black borders of the film it is a rare occasion it adds a little to the scene. Otherwise 2D all the way.
The acting was great, the action was cool as heck and slow motion really enhanced some scenes (is also one of the rare times where slow motion can be explained by the story which was also neat). A couple of bits were iffy to me like the [sp]Mini-Gun scene where its just like oh jump outside, seemed like such a cop-out[/sp] but I wasn't ever bored.
Yeah a solid 7/10 for me.
I'm now extremely excited for this. Fuck, I still have another week before it releases here.
Saw it yesterday.
This is going to be a sleeper hit, I can already tell. The movie was fantastic -- so fantastic. It was just really intelligently paced and structured, and it looked amazing, and it was super violent. :v: Not to mention how well Dredd and Anderson play off each other... Dredd is just terrifyingly cold and calculating and disturbingly sociopathic, whereas Anderson is more human. She has moments in which her Judge training shows, but she's much easier to relate with. The fact that she doesn't wear a helmet is particularly symbolic of this.
God, it was just so great. But no one was in the theater. It was me and my friends, and like three other random people. Not to mention this thread is dead despite the movie just releasing in the US. So yeah, it has to be a sleeper hit... this movie is too good to go completely unnoticed.
holy shit gonna see this right when it comes out (in my country)
Is it true that the girl [sp]is psychic?[/sp]
Because that seems pretty damn silly.

Not a spoiler, and yes. "Muties" are part of the Dredd universe, since the nuclear war that turned most of the world into uninhabitable wastes also caused strange mutations in those unfortunate enough to be living near the fallout. Anderson is actually a character from the comics, and yes, she's psychic. It's not overblown, though, and it's handled quite well.
I'm interested in seeing how far they'll go with the weirder parts of the Dredd mythology in sequels. (If they ever get made. And they should.) Psychics are the lucky muties. Most of them have extra limbs, or green skin, or something similarly weird. Plus, there's quite a bit of supernatural stuff in the Dredd universe... zombies, the Dark Judges, vampires, etc. This movie was pretty down-to-earth, despite Anderson's psychic abilities.
God damn those slow motion scenes were nice in 3d

Would you say Dark Judges could fit into a sequel easily enough? I haven't seen the movie yet but I'd love to see them do Dark Judges.

[sp]Does the 4 Judges that tries to kill Dredd counts?[/sp]
Great movie, my only complaints are that the slo-mo bathtub scene went on for too long and that when Dredd was fighting [sp]the other Judge in hand-to-hand, I couldn't tell who was who[/sp]
I'm guessing that's a movie spoiler Devil. In which case, did you even read my post? I haven't seen the movie yet.

Eh, I dunno. Like I said this was a pretty down-to-earth interpretation of Dredd, even with Anderson's whole psychic-powers thing. I'd really like to see them try out the Dark Judges, but it'd definitely be pretty different kind of movie.
On that note, though, is this movie making any money? No one is talking about it and, like I said, the theater was dead the day after it came out. If this doesn't at least break even, there is no justice in the world. (Pun FULLY intended.)
It's doing moderately well in the UK I know that much. I just don't think people are talking about it all that much given the majority don't care due to TDKR and Avengers already hitting screens. People either watched it without knowing anything about Dredd or just don't care so they don't talk about it that much.
Same thing happened with The Raid really, which is a shame because so far that's my second favourite movie of the year and it's always good to see great foreign cinema.

I dunno if this was answered yet, but the writer did want to make two more Dredd films, with the third focusing on the Dark Judges.
Just watched it
Loved it
The only things I question are: [sp]How come a minigun could tear through a wall built to withstand nuclear explostions? And why didn't Anderson use her psychic powers near the end[/sp]

[sp]They were designed to withstand external attack, so presumably they were more vulnerable to attack from the inside. Also those miniguns seemed exceptionally powerful, tearing apart all those apartments, so there's that. Second, Anderson did use her psychic powers near the end, that's how she knew to shoot the Judge there to "rescue" her.[/sp]

[sp]What I mean is, she could have used her psychic powers to attempt to escape when she got captured. Or to neutralize ma-ma in the end[/sp]

I know Karl Urban is keen to do another if everything falls into place and he discussed the possibility of them exploring Dredd's character as he begins questions the system. Not sure if they'll do the Titan penal colony stuff though like it was in the comic.

[sp]The only time she used her mind games was when she had the suspect captive in her custody, and all she did was change what he imagined. I think her main ability is reading, not manipulating thoughts.[/sp]
During the scene where [sp]she reads the black dude's mind, what was she shocked about? It like showed her face[/sp] but I didn't understand what happened.

He was probably [sp]Imagining some depraved and violent sex act and the producer/director/actors didn't want to film it.[/sp]
My local cineworld isn't showing this. The fuck it's been out a few weeks.
[editline]28th September 2012[/editline]
Yet a few neighbouring ones are showing it. In 3D only. Did this film do abysmally bad or something? What the fuck is going on it's been like 3 weeks since it came out. Fucking Total Recall is still showing for fucks sake.
Not sure I even want to see this anymore. The fact it's only in 3D where I am and for miles around is fucking pathetic.

Did 3D personally kidnap your family? Just go see it in 3D. :v:
Apparently this film bombed which is a major shame. The 3D is cool by the way, I wouldn't let it put you off the movie.
It's kinda shoddy marketing though. Only a few weeks in cinemas before they just cut the 2D screens is bat shit insane.
this movie owns its a shame its doing so poorly
yeah this was a fantastic adaptation and it was stylish as hell
I love both dredd and raid for completely different reasons
