I consider atheism a religion
I consider you wrong.
One Nation, UNDER GOD(OH wait, maybe we don't live in the USA...) Stop bitching about it, it's already changing. Maybe you should move to a different country? Do you refuse to say the pledge? Then you're not an american citizen. Doesn't say 'christian god'... it just says god. You can be pastafarian for all we care.
I consider atheism a religion
A non-belief is a belief?
i'm not a christian on a level that i build my moral on much more than the big picture: we are suposed to help eachother, be kind and not afraid to sacrifice some comfort to save anothers life. that's why i often see people that make me think they shouldn't be allowed a religion if they don't get the basic intentions behind it. the judaistic god is the god of justice; an eye for an eye. the god of christ is the god of compassion: forgiveness for everything. that's why church communities that invest all their time in GOT HATES *insert gay, black, muslims, sextoys, whatever* and i believe that people that stoop to such levels to better themselves deserves whatever punishment they believe god will serve to everybody else. if people knew their own religion, goes for muslims and jews too. we'd have no problems. muslims would spend more time trading with us than straooing bombs on their kids. baptists would spend more time being useful than feeding their kids half lies and abuse different people. israel would not try to wage war, but regain their former glory by help of their god and fruititious labor. of course these only cover the extremes. TL;DR extremist religious people are fucking arrogant pricks. many christians spend too much time hating, and jews should lay off the wars and prove hitler wrong (we all know he was wrong). wasn't it self explanatory as to why people should follow the New Testament if they are christians?
Alot of the contradictions people hear of in the bible come from the interpretations of man itself. Any branch of any religion, whether it be Catholic, Baptist, Anglican, Sum-mi Muslim, They all have their own interpretations of their own book. I'm a Christian myself, but I'm not entirely deep into the bible. I believe solely in the resurrection story. Not the whole hate for Gays, Blacks (Really), I believe these biblical stereotypes came from man-made interpretations, which is why religion is given such pity/hate. But that's just me.
We all know religion is ridiculous.
And how do you think life on earth started? But I do agree. They should not talk about creationism in school. And a quick thought on abortion: Ok, walk around on the street. Look at babies. They're adorible, right? Well think about killing that baby. Also, if the baby is in the womb and they kill it, it's abortion. If it's head comes out and they accidently kill the baby, it's murder. So abortion and murder can be about 2 seconds away from each other, but one is legal and the other is illegal. And a quick thought on evolution: So, apparently animals adapt to their enviroment. If there was a family that loved water, they lived in water their whole life, and had babies there and kept having them and lived the whole time for hundreds of years, would they grow gills? Of course not. and another thought on evolution: Basically evolution is there was a tide pool of little cells. And one day those cells said, "well, I'm tired of swimming around all the time, let's turn into a zebra." and some more cells said" well, I kind of want to fly around, let's turn into an eagle." And it goes on.
. Except a lump of cells isn't a human being.
But aren't we all just a big clump of cells?
That isn't the point. The point is that the private organization is using the absence of religious belief as a form of discrimination, which gives Atheists another reason to hate religion.
Your realize Christians face discrimination on similar factors.
But aren't we all just a big clump of cells?
Allow me to clarify: A blastocyst isn't sentient and conscious.
Your realize Christians face discrimination on similar factors.
Of course we do, some atheists just tend to be a really loud minority, but hey, a lot of my friends are atheists, and I care about them all the same as my Christian/Jewish/Muslim friends.
God's law is the only law for me.
Atheism is for losers. Believing in the ancient Greek religions is 10x better.
Atheism is for losers. Believing in the ancient Greek religions is 10x better.
I'll take my Norse mythology thank you very much.
exactly it's saying god, we're a nation "under god" guess what atheists don't believe in?!?!
It was added in during the 50's. Red scare to seprate commies(atheists) and normal dudes. It's unconstitutional for it to be there, or on the money.
Once humanity can get past religious beliefs , then we can truly prosper
The first thing I was enraged about is that if you do not believe in the christian god as told by the bible, you cannot join the boy scouts of america. Now, back then, I was an atheist still. I never publicly announced my beliefs and one of my friends in my troop was jewish. So, basically we had to shut up or be kicked out. What the fuck. How does god judge my qualification of being a productive boy scout or citizen?
Just to clarify in the BSA you can be any religion, you just have to have a religion. They had awards for jews, muslims, wickens, you name it. You can't be an atheist though, and proffesing so can get you kicked out. I'm an atheist and an Eagle Scout, I just kept my mouth shut and enjoyed camping and whatnot.
We claim to be a secular nation, even mandate it under our constitution, but stuff like this is clear evidence to the world that a significant portion of the country seeks to establish nothing less than a Christian theocracy, complete with public execution of nonbelievers, homosexuals, adulterers, and anyone else that doesn't fit their specific view of morality. Read the Old Testament sometime and count the number of executions, rapes, and genocides ordered by God. Apart from all that shit (which is both numerous and shitty) is my serious problem with the fact that religion, even the apparently benign religion of your local church, is dangerous because it pounds one basic concept into the heads of it's believers, from as early an age as possible: It is a virtue to blindly believe something despite all evidence to the contrary. Religious people aren't taught to weigh evidence, look at both points of view, listen to arguments, and decide for themselves. They are indoctrinated to unquestioningly believe what someone in a position of religious authority tells them, and by extension any other person of authority who has the appearance of being pious. I hate to be so arrogant about it, but religion is built on the cultivation of weak-minded sheep who are trained from baptism not to think for themselves. And that's fucking dangerous. That's what leads people to strap explosives to themselves and blow apart women and children: The blind belief that this is what God wants, and they will be rewarded for it. Even your garden variety church is dangerous simply because it cultivates that attitude of blind subservience that is so easily exploited.
If a man is willing to blow himself up and kill women and children, would we want them alive?
Then let's do something. For fuck's sake you can say whatever you want about how this isn't O.K. but no one really does much except make shitty youtube videos.
You can do something that has more effect on the world than you might think: Speak out every time an opportunity presents itself, and make Kumar's immortal phrase "As long as I have freedom of speech, nobody can shut me up" your modus operandi.
If a man is willing to blow himself up and kill women and children, would we want them alive?
...wat

Sad truth is, OP, that even if you did somehow get an atheist to run for any kind of office they wouldn't win anyway. Whether or not a theist agrees with everything the atheist says, they probably won't get the vote because "we have no morals."

Whether or not a theist agrees with everything the atheist says, they probably won't get the vote because "we have no morals."
That's why we have to do everything possible to tear down that rediculous assumption so that the day might come where the atheist vote is numerous enough to sway elections away from the fundamentalists who, if they had their way, would absolutely have anyone who couldn't "prove" their belief in God dragged out into the streets and shot. If you think that's an extreme view, then just ask yourself how many times you've heard the same advocated for illegal immigrants. And, after all, according to George Bush, atheists aren't citizens. “No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered as patriots. This is one nation under God.”
you're very right, except (yeah, insert generic baptisc explanation) the old testaments rules and comandments was cancelled out by the word of jesus (the new testament). a testament is known as a contract written by *dead uncle*. but the actual meaning of Testament in this context is "deal" or "contract" so therefore there's the old contract and the new contract. and the old is outdated and cancelled. that's why there was all the shit with jesus VS jews back then. otherwise you make a fine point and i share your thoughts. rate me informative if you get it. rate me dumb if you're thickheaded.
I have one passage for you on old/new testament.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
That is what Jesus said about the Old Testament. It still applies to Christians according to him.
Alot of the contradictions people hear of in the bible come from the interpretations of man itself. Atheists are all too quiet in the real world.
Just condense all religion into two things and let it live:
Be nice to to other people like they are yourself If you break the above rule, then apologize later
Should work for nearly all sane people.
Loud minority on the internet. Atheists are all too quiet in the real world.
Fuckin A. Atheists are too content with just shutting our mouths and staying under the radar, not in small part because they're afraid of being cast out by everyone they know, or in many cases are fearful of physical harm. I fully understand the sentiment, I'm honestly fearful of the day when I have to confront my Catholic parents about it. But being quiet isn't the answer, it's just further opening us up to being crushed underfoot by the Christian majority. So, to the atheists and agnostics: Use your freedom of speech, damnit! It's harder to oppress a minority when they're numerous and loud enough that the majority can't quietly get away with it anymore.
