Wait a minute, didn't you guys ever hear how your grandparents considered going to the movies an occasion to wear their best suit? Isn't that casual?
No my grandparents worked in blue collar jobs on the railways delivering mail and stuff, they didn't really have time to do that shit.
We don't work as hard nowadays, therefore we have more time to do casual things.
Not even on Sundays?
I usually go out with a t-shirt and regular jeans.
Skinny jeans would limit my movement while running, I hate them. I run or jog a lot because every minute I spend getting somewhere is a minute I can spend doing something else. Regular jeans are great, they look good and are usually resistant to lots of wear and tear.
Skinny jeans are fine if you're a girl, because although they rip pretty easily and can't handle lots of movement, they make them asses look great. On guys however...
Anyways if I'm spending $30+ on a shirt it better be goddamn bulletproof. Or the tiny little logo better grant me magical powers. My 2 cents.
Skinny jeans don't rip easily unless you bought them for 2 dollars from a second hand shop.

Don't worry, it's just a phase. You'll grow out of it.
However I do agree with your latter point. Looking fly is all well and good, but fuck companies that stick a Logo on their clothes and sell them for extortionate amounts of money. 9 times out of 10 you can head down to somewhere like Hennies or Topman and find the exact item for a fraction of the price and without a logo.
Logos are for people who care more about fashion than style.
I usually just go with some random shirt and skinny jeans. normally black.
shoes uhh..
skate shoes/converse i have like 2 pairs of converse and 4 skate shoe variants.
2 of which i actually skate in.
Not even on Sundays?
Nobody worked on sundays, it was the Sabbath day. everyone put on formal clothes, went to church, say a few prayers then speak with everyone you know and then go home and eat a sunday meal.
Fine, your grandparents were poor. Happy now?
Anyways, having read the first page, I'm seeing a "make your own style" kind of thing versus scope's very limited view of fashion reliant on what the major brands give him. I agree with the first
I was just providing a brief outline of clothes brands, but yeah, call me a designer-whore if you like, The whole meaning of like is to find true happiness in whatever makes you happy, and for some people.. Clothes, hair, improving there body, being healthy and looking good are what makes them happy.
There's no such thing as 'wasting money' on designer clothes, because it's just part of being happy for some people. Other people find happiness in painting nature, but would you ever approach them and tell them they're wasting there time. Fuck no, of course you wouldn't.
This thread is about clothes because they're part of what make me happy and yeah, I do like branded stuff, true. Only stuff that I look at and say 'Wow that looks cool' do I buy however:
If Hollister pushed out a brown tweed jacket tomorrow I know some people would like that and buy it based on how it looks. Other people would buy it just because it's Hollister. I wouldn't buy it at all because I don't like Brown tweed jackets.
Well, if you DID like Brown tweed jackets, would you buy Hollister's, or would you look for one that isn't $300? For me some of the happiness lies in outsmarting the brands :buddy:
You can think of designer clothing as the 'seving suggestion' pictures on the front of cereal packets.
It's suggested that you should pour milk on your cornflakes, but some people might like to throw in some fruit or sugar. Some people might even use chocolate milk instead of regular milk (they some kinda crazy). The point is, the designer clothes look great on that specific model with that specific body type under specific conditions, so you need to use a little initiative to get the best outfit for you.

I'd buy it if it looked like it was worth $300.
That's not what I asked
Jeans from marks work ware house - $10
Shirt from a concert - $15
Shoos from wall mart - $30ish
Being able to walk around not naked - $55ish
If you want vintage stuff cruise around your local charity shops. If you do find something, chances are, it'll be a classic piece that's better made than anything currently on offer from designers. However, you run the risk of not finding anything at all, or falling in to the trap thrift shops like the ones in central London where they charge for the 'vintage' label.
Ugh.
Suits are not and never have been casual wear, they are formal wear for work and special occasions. You may see television programs that depict people during that era at work in such formal wear. Nothing was fine and dandy after 1946, people had lost friends and relatives, then you had the period of red scare where everyone was getting anti-communist propaganda, nothing was fine and dandy.
I'm sorry, but you appear to be looking at every negative aspect that there is about that time period, but nothing positive.
You could just as easily label this a bad time because everyone is upset about the recent environmental disaster, many families have lost loved ones in Iraq, take a look at the terrorist attacks that happened on the world trade centers, there are starving people in africa! We are running out of energy, we must go green, global warming will kill us all, 2012 is coming, the world is a horrible place! You cannot really expect for me to believe that there was nothing good about living during that time.
[editline]05:17PM[/editline]
I also wasn't trying to bring across the point that suits were all that anyone ever wore in the mid 20th century, but it is impossible to refute that they were a lot more common in those times, especially more so than they are now.
Compare these pictures for instance
Fine, your grandparents were poor. Happy now?

The majority of people are poor, therefore most people didn't wear suits therefore suits were not widely used as casual wear.
Yeah, but they didn't wear t-shirts, which were once only used as underwear, and converse, which were actually considered sportswear, either
People also didn't start really wearing jeans casually until the 1950s

The early 1900's had the great depression of 1929, the 1918 flu pandemic, 2 world wars, hitler, the holocaust. These things were much worse than what we have today. Today we have freedom of speech, more equality, and the huge array of fashion that we have today. We also have the Internet, we are in a brilliant time.
even casual wear for lots of people was composed of something like this

Fashion changes, go with the flow or you end up being a social outcast.
[editline]06:30PM[/editline]
While people did dress in a style that a lot of you would consider formal, it was just the fashion, but proper fully fledged suits were only worn by the rich.
Fashion changes, go with the flow or you end up being a social outcast.
Hahahahaha quoted so you can't change that.
However, most people worked in blue collar jobs and so they didn't wear formal clothing as it would just be harder to wash.
[editline]06:31PM[/editline]
Hahahahaha quoted so you can't change that.
And why would I change that?
While people did dress in a style that a lot of you would consider formal, it was just the fashion, but proper fully fledged suits were only worn by the rich.
Are you saying they didn't have freedom of speech in America in the late 1940s :raise:
If you lived in America during the second world war, or slightly after like my grandparents, who were born both in 1939, you would be effected minimally by it. You would be too young to know anyone personally who went to war, unless they were a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, etc. Women gained the right to vote 3 decades prior to this time, although was a lot of discrimination against colored people. The economic boom that happened after the second world war wouldn't have been too bad either, as that was a time when many families could afford things which they couldn't previously, such as nice cars, nice suburban houses, more children, etc. After the war, the men returned, having seen the rest of the world. No longer was the family farm an ideal; no longer would blacks accept lesser status. The GI Bill allowed more men than ever before to get a college education. Women had to give up their jobs to the returning men, but they had tasted independence.
I guess I'm an optimist

People going to work wore formal wear, casual wear wasn't completely 100% formal unless you were mega rich.
This was my point to contradict your point where everyone wore loads of posh rich extravagant suits and stuff.
