Coincidentally listening to NIN while watching this makes it even more sad :smith:
You couldn't visit chernobyl directly, the radiation levels in there are still very high
There's some places you can still go: http://www.tourkiev.com/chernobyltour/
Very powerful images and a great thread. Ever since I heard about the disaster I've been interested in visiting Chernobyl
[img_thumb]http://inapcache.boston.com/universal/site_graphics/blogs/bigpicture/chernobyl_25th_anniversary/bp31.jpg[/img_thumb] That's really amazing Great thread
It's really a horrifying story. There are a lot of really good documentaries about this incident.
On April 26, 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl nuclear power facility in what is now Ukraine exploded. The largest civil nuclear disaster in history led to mass evacuations, and long-term health, agricultural, and economic distress. The nearby city of Pripyat has been abandoned, and a 19-mile radius "exclusion zone" established where radiation contamination makes continued habitation dangerous. Collected here are archival pictures of the catastrophe, as well as more recent images of the area. In addition, two photographers who've made extensive studies of the aftermath have been gracious enough to share their work with us here. Diana Markosian documented the lives of pensioners Lida and Mikhail Masanovitz, who continue to live in the abandoned ghost town of Redkovka, Ukraine. Her work is found here in photographs 13 through 16. Michael Forster Rothbart has produced one of the most extensive records available of life near Chernobyl. His work is found here in photographs 23 through 29. Links to the websites of both photographers can be found below. -- Lane Turner (34 photos total) [img_thumb]http://inapcache.boston.com/universal/site_graphics/blogs/bigpicture/chernobyl_25th_anniversary/bp1.jpg[/img_thumb] [img_thumb]http://inapcache.boston.com/universal/site_graphics/blogs/bigpicture/chernobyl_25th_anniversary/bp31.jpg[/img_thumb]
I'm up for moving INTO the exclusion zone :buddy: EDIT: Seriously those two photos just give me that eerie feeling of "ghost town, don't go near" yet i want to live in that ghosty area so badly because of the setting! I mean, having a wholse field of abandoned tanks and helicopters next door would be fucking awesome. Sure they are irradiated, but finding a not-so-irradiated-or-broken tank and restoring it would be killer fun! Not to mention the whole freaking zone to explore for a never-ending UER feel. Just need some RAD-X and shitloads of radaway...
It'd really fucking awesome to go exploring in those areas
I want to go to the abandoned military vehicle yard so bad, would be paradise for me.
I would pretend I'm a Soviet driver or helicopter pilot and yell words that just sound Russian and jump into the helicopter or APC and pretend I'm getting ready for an attack by America. Would be really embarassing if I was caught doing it, but doesn't look like anyones around to see.
I want one of those Hinds and BMPs
I don't think you do. If you spent any amount of time inside them you might as well take a bath in the reactor. Also for some reason I had no idea this: Was based on an actual place near Chernobyl NPP.
I suppose price to visit pripyat would not be very high, since i live in a country right next to Ukraine...Very interesting place to visit im sure... Also i think that Soviets should have informed atleast some of the nearby cities for immediate evacution, regardless whether it would cause chaos or not...
Also i think that Soviets should have informed atleast some of the nearby cities for immediate evacution, regardless whether it would cause chaos or not...
...They did. Hence the exclusion zone, it was established and evacuation began within a day. Admittedly they pretended nothing had happened at first despite people in Pripyat already suffering from radiation sickness.
...They did. Hence the exclusion zone, it was established and evacuation began within a day.
Not from what i heard, the evacuation happened 1 or 2 days after the incident... which was too late because pripyat was only 2 miles away from the plant...
I always thought they just left everything behind and just didn't bother with it anymore. Seems that after 25 years the disaster still affects lives.
Those people have only 1 head :wtc:

I share my birthday with this disaster. :smith:
I share my birthday with this disaster. :smith:
Happy birthday big boy
They really nailed the mood in stalker damn. Thanks for this thread i love these pictures.
 found a generator 60 miles away and running the generator and amazingly my cable still works
I want to go back there when all the radiation (or most of it) is gone, so I can live there. I mean, how cool would it be to live in the middle of a ghost town.
