My girlfriend of three years just confessed to me that she used to be a man

who is more oppressed is irrelevant, the fact is someone somewhere is being oppressed and the severity of it doesn't matter because it is an objectively bad thing

Ignorance was never solved by simply waiting for it to go away.
No it isn't. The suicide rate for trans people is around 40% because they are treated so badly.
So fucking what. I don't see trans people being segregated into low income parts of cities, forced to send their kids to trans only schools, brutalized by police, forced to use separate restrooms and drinking fountains. Even trying to justify comparing the black movement to theirs is pretty fuckin insulting.
I honestly don't care if there's one person who is ignorant against me, Oynx. Let them be, in the end I'm the better person. My only concern is at least teaching SOMEONE who is lurking or not taking part to get educated on the matter. As long as one person has had their stance changed on the matter, in a positive way, I'm happy. Even if I don't know about it I'm happy. At least I did one good deed for the T part of the LGBT community. And it's just another small step into hopefully putting the stupid bigotry against LGBT to rest.
I'm going to be honest; I still sometimes have immediate negative impressions of LGBT guys and girls.
It's not something that I enjoy; it's just when I come across somebody who doesn't conform to my own personal ideals of 'masculinity' or 'femininity' I tend to pull back a little and feel a little negatively towards them.
It's not a feeling I choose to have; it just happens. I think it's mostly socialised, from being around people who feel similarly.
I don't let (or at least I try very hard not to let) ie affect the way I deal with the person, however.
And I hope that it resolves soon!

Excuse me why are you completely ignoring my point about how there is currently a death penalty for being transgender or gay in quite a few countries in the world?
Aside from how blatantly subjective that last sentence was, let me break the argument down:
They're not referring to the specific treatments that people were experiencing, but rather the same ideas and principles surrounding discrimination. Blacks were treated as lesser during that time period, and similarly now people are treating transgender men and women in similar rite, regardless of what they prefer. The analogy wasn't the best, but it was used to convey the connotation of discrimination.
you are worried about being insulting
hahaha
oh boy
If you seriously think that the black rights movement is less than what is going on now, then you need to read more history books.
I didn't even come close to saying it was, all I pointed out is that you referred to this as a "petty argument" when you're discriminating against every transgender person in the world.
T. Sonar I apologize for calling you a dude when I didn't know you were a woman, but you seriously need to look into that statement regarding how this argument is apparently worse than the black rights movement.

Partially because there is always a chance of someone having their opinion changed.
There also exists the importance of necessary resistance. If only anti-transgender people came over to this thread, it could have a capacity of ending a relationship.
Lastly, it can be considered a good argumentative exercise session.
And I am not taking any of this even remotely personally, I am just as relaxed as I was before this thread.

Nobody said it was the same severity. Only similar discrimination.
Also I love how you're getting SO up in arms about this yet you're more than likely white so it didn't affect you in the least and it's STILL SOMEHOW hard for you to understand us getting mad at the belittling and dehumanizing remarks you're making.

40% of them commit suicide.
Imagine 1000 such people were born.
400 of them would die to their own hands.
And that's not counting those murdered by people.

I called it petty because in the end we were all lashing insults and witty remarks.
If I offended you I apologize.

Again, it's the central idea around it. We're still treated as lesser people by people like you who refuse to call us by the proper identity and insult and demean us for being who we are.
Likewise, the gay oppression towards marriage affects some transgenders too. Unless you get sex reassignment surgery, you're not considered by the government as your preferred sex. And well, some transgenders like don't wish to get the surgery for multiple reasons. So if I were to marry a guy I can't because it would be viewed as a gay marriage. Sure, we could get married by a state that allows it, but that still means the federal government doesn't view our marriage as a valid one.
How can you say the oppression of marriage towards gays, as it branches also to transgenders, isn't basically the same principle as what the blacks went through. The bottom line is we're viewed and treated as a lesser people.
T. Sonar I apologize for calling you a dude when I didn't know you were a woman, but you seriously need to look into that statement regarding how this argument is apparently worse than the black rights movement.
Nobody said it was worse, they said it was comparable
i.e., 'it contains similar elements', not 'it is as severe'
If we only ever compared things that were of the same importance, scale or magnitude we would not compare anything at all and our capacity for explanation and discourse would be destroyed
So fucking what. oh my god you're trying to take a moral high-ground wowow
So fucking what. I don't see trans people being segregated into low income parts of cities,
Yeah you do. Being trans makes it signifiantly harder to gain employment and trans people are often considerably poorer than their cis counterparts
forced to send their kids to trans only schools
Yeah actually trans people would kinda have to do this. Send your kids to the wrong school and they could easily have the shit kicked out of them for having a "tranny" mother... also it's hard for trans people to get married and very hard to adopt. Plus if you have the bad luck to be going to a bad school and discover you're trans, expect to be hounded out of there.
brutalized by police
Ahahahahaha oh wow. Yes, yes trans people get brutalised by coppers (and everyone else) all the time
forced to use separate restrooms and drinking fountains
Uhh... trans people risk getting beaten up if they use the "wrong" toilet. They have to hope there's gender neutral toilets around
Even trying to justify comparing the black movement to theirs is pretty fuckin insulting.
Trying to imply there's differences is incredibly fucking insulting. I hate when people come this one "Oh gays =/= civil rights" "But we're being denied marriage equality, just like you were denied interracial marriage equality" "Oh womens lib =/= civil rights" "But people are judging me based on an external characteristic rather than the basis of my character" "Oh transgender people =/= civil rights" "But ALL THOSE THINGS UP THERE"
more than likely white
Good point. I'm white so I shouldn't give a shit about the black movement and what they went through :downs:
I called it petty because in the end we were all lashing insults and witty remarks.

I'm not trying to lash insults, I'm trying to convey points. When I call somebody bigoted it's because they're being bigoted: expressing extreme prejudice and intolerance.
Good point. I'm white so I shouldn't give a shit about the black movement and what they went through :downs:
Do 40% of Black people commit suicide?
This thread went downhill fast as hell
Fuck it I'm going to watch some shemale porn

You've gotta be trolling at this point, honestly. It's like you're consciously ignoring any valid points anyone is trying to make to you.

I wonder why it went downhill
Good point. I'm white so I shouldn't give a shit about the black movement and what they went through :downs:
I love how you didn't include the 2nd part of that.
You're(more than likely) white. Your ethnicity is the one that brutalized the blacks burning the time yet despite being part of the ethnicity who has an incredibly oppressive history you still take the moral high ground and say it was very bad to the point of even being insulted that someone would compare something quite similar to it.
That's great! You've got morals!
Yet you can't apply these morals to a hugely oppressed minority in the present day?
[editline]drat![/editline]
Aww he left.

I never said I was against them. All I said was you're a dude no matter how much shit you do to yourself to change that. I'm all for em having equal rights and all that shit. Yet everyone had a huge bitch fit.
I'm not a bigot, even if a few posts rubbed you the wrong way. I don't give a fuck what you do with your body and how ya wanna live but I stick by what I was saying bout a dude still being a dude.
If you're still pissy or w.e take it to PM's cause this shit snowballed
I never said I was against them. All I said was you're a dude no matter how much shit you do to yourself to change that. I'm all for em having equal rights and all that shit. Yet everyone had a huge bitch fit.
that was a quick wank
"yeah dude everyone had like a total huge bitch fit bro"
i don't think you even understand your own words.
you're not against transgenders
but you think transgenders don't exist because you're a "dude" no matter what
this is why everyone thinks you're being dumb, i'm just trying to help you out here

Because you are being ignorant and ignoring everything we are telling you and refuse to call people by the proper terms because you're immature.

Last time I checked you can only disagree on something that isn't a fact. (:
