I think I'm done. I really appreciate all the help everyone here is.
i'll take some time to criticize everything tomorrow. here's a late displacer beast, i also did some sketches for a hook horror before finding out somebody took it.
Nice work having the shadow of the real displacer beast be a couple feet to the left.
weird. the hook horror sketch didn't appear on the original post.
Nice work having the shadow of the real displacer beast be a couple feet to the left.
thanks. i just defined the shadow too. [editline]15th July 2014[/editline] as for dnqboy, could you post a version without image compression? hashmere, i'm sorry, i didn't know you took the hook horror cause i didn't see your original post. so if you want we can both work on it or i can leave it entirely to you, or we could both do different renditions. it's up to you really.
Hmm, I'd like to finish mine just so I can get used to colouring and stuff. I don't mind if you use yours, it looks great so far.
Alright about your hook horror here's some stuff I would immediately change. [t]http://i.imgur.com/Oc3ieTf.jpg[/t] Let's go step by step. I did a really quick paint over your hook horror with some design changes, you might not like them but I'll explain what I'm doing as a concept artist. I also did some quick sketches. Before anything, during this weekend I made a couple hook horror sketches but didn't have time to actually refine any of them, so I got a general idea/direction with the hook horror already. This is kind of important if you're designing an abstract creature like the hook horror: think of many ways to approach it. I like the scrawny look you took with the hook horror. It resembles the AD&D description and also the Neverwinter Nights version, but the hook horror is a sort of tough creature with a good natural AC because of its carapace, so I kept an overall thin/agile figure with tough/resistant attributes. Eventhough you might instantly think there isn't anything in the real world that resembles a hook horror (so you can't really do studies, etc) that's absolutely wrong! The hook horror is a mixture of beetle, human and vulture. So look at a few beetle carapaces and even turtle carapaces. See how the folds and divisions happen and portray figures with very loose brushstrokes. Right now you're attaining yourself to detail and that should only happen during the last stages of your illustration. Look at how loose the details are on my rendition of your hook horror... That's what's important. Look at the figure as a whole and see if it looks balanced, think of brushstrokes as WEIGHT on your composition. You can clearly see how the top of the hook horror is heavy and bulky while the rest is lighter and sleek. Why does that happen? It's simple, that's directly related to how you apply contrast on your illustration. The big black strokes next to the creature's head are seen as shadows and you'll instantly relate that to something (a carapace, in this occasion) so it creates volume and form. That's how you build a creature from scratch. I don't know really, I think you need to do a few studies on weight, loose brushstrokes, poses, exaggeration, etc... Once you have a good grasp on that you can come up with virtually any design you could ever imagine.

Ugh I'm sorry. I actually made a couple designs on the Death Knight. I didn't feel like they were good enough so I scrapped 'em + I've been busy doing other things. Maybe I'll try again but for now you can remove me off the list...
Thanks for the insight, I suppose I'll go brush up on the basics before I try something like this.
repost from the CWTDAT:
here's work on the hook horror... before photoshop crashed when i was saving and i permanently lost my file. i was finished with it too... it had color and all. but when you save it gets rid of the autosave file so i'll have to do another one tomorrow i guess. i wasn't 100% satisfied with this design anyway.
started doing beholder sketches. i'll re-do the hook horror coloring too. [t]https://33.media.tumblr.com/b0edbe6a3bfc102aa1f30b2f4f35f9b7/tumblr_n8tqn3YUxn1snm6fco2_1280.png[/t]

Ill defiantly do some once my equipment arrives.
I think the beholder is a bit weak now, but if you worked on the eye alone it could become fantastic The hook horror is very nice, my only complaint is the beak and surrounding area reading poorly. Great silhouette
Agree, it looks a bit like a floating head rather than a floating eye. The focus seems to be on the silhouette rather than the eye.
I'll work on the ghouls. Here's a WIP sketch.

Great silhouette
good crit. yeah i'll define this one and make another beholder just for good measure. also a combat scene featuring a beholder too.
hey that's pretty cool, how you apply the brushstrokes reminds me a lot of traditional media.
