I'm pretty sure your brain acknowledges that you have the hiccups in the first place since you are trying to get rid of it. If your brain didn't know you have the hiccups, then you obviously won't. Tug on your ear lobe next time you get the hiccups. Trust me on this.
I rarely have hiccups, I generally get it from eating too fast, and when I have it, I can't prevent making sound. I however can also stop it by inhaling VERY quickly.
