also this was bugging me
Yeah, that's what you get when you draw with a hangover. THanks, I'll fix it when I'll be home.
Don't have a tablet atm so I'll have to draw with pencil & paper, feels so different. Also I don't have a scanner so take these shitty photos. I've been learning heads & some gesture drawing for the past week:
???, Leonardo Decaprio, Abraham Lincoln, John Lennon, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan Right?
My middle finger hurts where it connects to the hand, but I want to draw more. What do?
Take some aspirin and keep going.

Dunno how to continue on this: Based on Nocturne from League of Legends, sort-of a skin idea I had in mind. It's hard finding proper reference pics, so I went with what I remembered and also adding stuff in that obviously is not on the original concept, i.e the "runes" and the fact that "he" is bare chested. Gonna switch up the pose majorly, as it really does not fit the character ATM, but apart from that, any tips or crits?

Mainly they're there as a general reminder of pose and anatomy and colour and stuff, instead of specific pictures of what you're drawing. Anyway, don't pet your lines so much. Construct your pose and basic anatomy in its entirety before making little details like the tattoos and holes in the front of the face. Learn your muscles. For example, that lump sticking straight out of the arm near the shoulder towards the viewer isn't a real muscle. The rest of the arm looks more fat than muscular, and this is what happens when you don't construct arms without muscles in mind. Anyway, some hand practice stuff: [t]http://i.imgur.com/p5bjrbE.jpg[/t]
Jesus Christ you people are good, really inspiring stuff here.. keep it up for real. Ehm yeah, planning to make a 2d topdown Wipeout inspired Flash game.. Anyone wanna help me understand something? Why is modern and contemporary art put up to such grandure all around the world? Every time I go to the Metropolitan I stop in the modern and contemporary art section in hopes of seeing a few good modern artworks, and yet 75% of it is stuff like this [t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/original/DT6692.jpg[/t] [t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/web-large/69.274.1%20-%20color.jpg[/t] [t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/web-large/sf2006.32.48.jpg[/t] [t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/original/69.274.2%20-%20color.jpg[/t][t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/web-large/SF1984.435.jpg[/t][t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/web-large/DP135157.jpg[/t][t]http://images.metmuseum.org/CRDImages/ma/web-large/DT8543.jpg[/t] These are all artwork currently displayed at the Metropolitan, yet I fail to see their purpose, and honestly I would love to. I just think modern art (abstract expressionism) is too personal (to the artist) and it means, represents, and provides nothing of value to the public. It gives people some sense of personal understanding of these artwork, in the same sense as seeing a dead squirrel on the street can make us understand death and the greater mysteries of life. I think its a disgusting practice of putting up artworks in a place like the Metropolitan, alongside artists such as Van Gogh and Monet, simply based on names. No one would give a shit if some piss poor kid from Brooklyn drew a bunch of squares or splattered some shapes on a canvas and called it a day, but once the artist's name is plastered on it it's meant to represent something. Art should speak directly to the viewer, and not with the help of a name behind it.
ye not with that attitude!
I know I already drew some more... :P

Art should speak directly to the viewer, and not with the help of a name behind it.
For my first year or two at art school I was looking at becoming a fine artist with the goal of subverting this public-inaccessibility from the inside. Here's how I understand contemporary art. It's a quick write-up and I'm probably going to forget to mention things. Really as soon as the camera came along painters started to switch their focus - what was the point in serving their very utilitarian purpose of recording people and places when there was now a machine that could do it perfectly? So painters started to abstract things and we got cubism and all the rest of it. Modernism happened, then postmodernism (a term that we can use to describe not only the current artistic movement but also the current state of our culture, but lets not get into sociology right now). Contemporary postmodernism is really conceptual. There's still a focus on the 'spectacle' (i.e., pretty ass things) but there's a big focus on the IDEA and expression of that idea. The discourse surrounding 'what is art' is a big thing, so there's a lot of meta-concepts flying around and people making art with the sole purpose of saying 'what can art be?'. Contemporary art seems to also be about the individual interpretation of the piece; sometimes the work is simply about how it makes you feel. Do you feel disgusted? Cool; that's the result of the piece and essentially this personal perception of it is what's important (personally I think it's nice how it doesn't push a specific idea or opinion on you like many 'good guys win serial killer dies'-style films and books do). But I do think that the inability of the public to grasp fine art is a problem, and I do think the majority of the problem is with art itself. Personally I don't see the point of creating fine art as a final product - if I were to make something, I'd want it to be enjoyed or understood (or, I guess, 'appreciated') by a large amount of people. But fine art seems to almost deliberately cater only to a very, very small segment of society. I guess those who are within that section of society find it to be a very beautiful thing. But for those of us who want something perhaps a little more further reaching, it's not for us. Also if you're judging art solely on technical merit (which really isn't the way contemporary art works at all) bear in mind that a lot of the seemingly fast and careless art that you see hanging up in the Met took a long time to get right; many, many iterations to get the desired effect, a lot of revision and conceptual thinking so that it hit the right notes for the intended audience, and also quite often the actual production process is deceitfully laborious. I had a lecturer who would make these big painted wooden structures and it looks like cast plastic. But it's actually wood that's been cut and sanded and then painted with layer upon layer, each layer sanded meticulously before the next one goes down to create this unbelievably glossy and fine surface. Whatever the intended reading of the piece, it's definitely not a case of laziness
doing my part to keep it real after the above discussion [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/PzhCQeK.jpg[/img_thumb] i know the composition is a little off, its going to be a main menu for a thing
Lookin pretty sweet I'd put a hue/saturation adjustment layer in there and set it to fully desaturated and take another look at your values though - could be pushed way further than they are [editline]1st July 2013[/editline] also some sort of blueish light from a window to add some interest to that left area could be good
So I've been trying to improve and shit. This is what I doodled a few days ago. Still staying in my comfort zone of "black-armor wearing military guy males facing dead center with no shading" though. I'd definitely say I've been improving when you consider that I used to draw like this last year :V
Finally learned enough to be able to draw whole head! Faces are hard.
Neat. What does it mean and what is that dot between his eyebrows? Lower lips should be at half from the bottom of the nose to the bottom of the chin.
