Wanted to push the value up in this one (especially around the nose), but the paper was like: "Nope" and decided to curve up like an erected penis. This is infuriating. I went to the shop for thicker papers but they cost up to 2000 for one A4, which is a fucking rip-off. ~25 mins.

get a wider range of pencils, like really dark ones (9B and shit). this prevents your paper from curving.
when i go traditional with graphite i usually use charcoal to get dark values and boost up my drawing in general. i made this with graphite and charcoal:

it's charcoal but the face i glitched out in photoshop.
now you have no idea how satisfyingly good your drawings will turn out to be when you start implementing charcoal. as soon as you start blending it in it encourages you to work with higher contrast and it ends up pretty neat.
you will need however bigger (and thicker) papers. i use a3 canson papers, they're not that expensive. just throw a few coins into a block of A3s and you won't regret it :)
Done with the first concept, started working on the 2nd but hell no I'm not showing you that.

Google'd and it came up with a buttload of Canson paper types.
Anyway, a few days ago I went out and bought 20 peices of thick paper, but the textures of it is really rough and it smells really sour. Is this normal?
And when I asked for charcoal they only gave me these 6B ones. I might have to there again. Can you have a list of recommended paper brand/type for darker value drawings? Just in case they don't have what you suggested.
What do you think?
It is a picture of a drawing. (the scanner broke)
When i get the scanner to work I will work on it on the computer. As for now there is no edit

Why not buy a sketchbook designed for drawing?

They're cheap. Also you should invest in bigger heads on those gesture drawings.
hardcover sketchbooks make me happy in my trousers
but they are so damn expensive!
looking at the pieces of art in this thread is inspirational, therefore, i decided to give this whole "art" thing a go
so here's my first attempt at a portrait actually intended to look good; quite an abysmal attempt, at that

That's actually pretty damn sweet for an early attempt.
Nab yourself some of these and have a play with Loomis' head drawing methods. Just an afternoon of messing with his figure drawing method gave me noticeable improvement. Knowledge is great!
i kind of just scribbled for the hair cause i have no fucking idea how to do that and its only a sketch anyway

120 pages, great density, great surface. Did every single drawing I posted here prior to the last 3 in it. Costed me $8. In Ukraine. In the only art store in town. Imported from whenever they import from.I doubt you can find a place on earth where stuff is more overpriced. That is not much for 1/3 year of drawing.

Crap, in NZ they are way more expensive. Or at least the ones from the 'respected' art shops are - I guess the department store ones could be cheaper, but at the end of the day if you buy a proper sketchbook you want nice paper weight and whatnot.
How is the paper weight/quality on yours? I might just move to the Ukraine.
Here is the shop we normally go to: http://www.gordonharris.co.nz/sketch-books-notebooks-visual-diaries-c-75.html

Like I said, feels like a solid paper for drawing, You can shade as many layers as you want and it has that magical softness that says "Y-you can shade some more if you want, there's plenty of room in me~". Don't know how to explain it better. Definitely has nothing in common with your average printer/office paper, different worlds (I have both). Price depends on a brand mostly. You should just gather up some money and order from overseas 3-5 hardcover sketchbooks of a brand you'll like (Mine's Daler Rowney) for $8 each, as example, and live a happy life for the next couple of years. Should fit into a price of a new videogame.

Hot stuff
I recommend EVERYBODY to watch (parts 1-3) (30 mins total) on the FZD channel. A really nice exploration of composition
You got Officeworks over there Mal? Here they sell these chinese made hardcover sketchbooks cheaply, Quill is the brand. About 95-110gsm I think, quite nice.
Just had a look through their website, they don't seem to do the hardcovers online :/
Ah no sir. We do have Warehouse Stationery and whatnot though but it's still ridiculous expensive.
It's alright, when I have a bit more time I'll scour some of the other more officey retailers and see how it looks. Thanks for the lead!

ok i messed up a bit because in brazil it's just called canson "drawing". but apparently the english version of this is called "mixed media".
http://www.cansonstudio.com/en/canson-foundation-series-mix-media-98lb-160gsm-pad.html
with this paper one side provides a fine texture and the other provides a rougher texture.
go to an art supplier and ask for t. if they don't have it, ask for a paper with a medium texture so you can use dry materials like charcoal, pastels etc. they'll definitely give you one. if price is a problem see if they have cheaper brands of the same paper. since you're gonna try charcoal for the first time you won't exactly need a high quality paper!
answering your question yes, some papers do smell sour and that's normal. if that bothers you just go for another brand!
about charcoal, it comes in different forms:
uncompressed sticks come in different thicknesses & hardnesses: willow and vine (where willow is darker). because they're cheap and available everywhere you might wanna give these a try. they're messy to work with, however, so expect to get your hands dirty.
compressed sticks are really dark and don't give out as much dust. i've been using these! most brands classify them with the same range they use for pencils (4B, H, etc)
pencils are wayyy less messy to work with and can be sharpened easily. i'm going to buy some whenever i get a chance.
remember you have to fix the charcoal. you can use hair spray but i recommend buying a spray fixative. to fix, apply it 40 cm away from the paper thoroughly, horizontally and vertically.
you'll want to get a kneaded eraser too.
this might all sound like too much money but in the long-term, it's not. you'll be investing on a technique you'll take for life. plus kneaded erasers are particularly long lasting :)
hope i helped!
looks good, but this and the last one seem a bit flat

I must remind myself to come here more often - I've never been good at drawing though I've always wanted to, as whenever inspiration comes to me forms into images inside of my mind. Music and art are my favourite sources of inspiration when writing, yet I have no idea where to look for when it comes to art.

You guys, all of you are amazing and I'm thankful you share your wonderful works here - one person's work of art inspires the other one to make his.

So I talked to a lecturer and managed to start to get out of my slump!
Work in progress composition practice, rendering not final etc
Edit: had to convert from Greyscale to RGB because for some reason it was appearing way too dark when viewed outside of Photoshop.
Proper values:

The colour issue is weird. I reckoned it was a colour profile issue, but I tried out a bunch of greyscale profiles as well as turning off Photoshop's colour profile embedding but it would always come out too dark when viewed in a browser/viewer. It would be perfectly toned when the exported JPG was viewed in Photoshop though. Strange!
