I'm drawing a map, a bit old styled, but I'm not sure how to mark out the forest without using colours
Eck does anybody have any experience turning a value painting into a coloured image and making it look actually good?
This is the Salticid light-weight exoskeleton armored suit. It is mainly worn by assault squads, the strengthened legs allow for fast mobility as well as for jumping several meters up into the air to catch the foe off guard or as a mean to escape. Both hands are free and mobile and can use multiple types of hand-carried weapons, an extra set of lower arms are incorporated into the design to allow grappling and climbing when jumping as well as formidable close-quarter-combat weapons. The head is armed with a small pair of lasers capable of penetrating thick armor plating and melt flesh.
In this design I tried to incorporate a spider-ish design, mainly inspired by the jumping spiders and Metal Gear Solid. I wanted to create something that could resemble a finished piece of concept-art that came from a game studio. Been working on this for like +10 hours, I hope you like it. :)
i really love this. its rather unconventional and i like the androgyny and elegance of it.
Yeah it is, it's just used for architecture, not art.
You have a very narrowminded view on art. Art can be anything, there is no rules to what can and can not be art.
Art does not have a look, art does not have a method, art has absolutely no rules to it whatsoever. As long as a person made something to express and/or mean something, then it's art.
"I want to make something that looks good" *Makes something he thinks looks good*, there you go, an art piece has been made.
You're seriously mixing up "in my opinion I think your piece lacks impact and soul" with "art has soul and impact, that is the rule".
Still, if you disregard that, the criticism he gave is quite relevant.
Yepp. Play around with the layer options, in the way that you make a new layer and set its layer mode to something and then color. Soft light is really good.
Thanks guys! I've been using a 'color' blend-mode layer over the top of my greyscale but it's lookin a bit weird still. I'll try your suggestions! I also bought this to help, so we'll see how it all turns out.
i wish the learning process for drawing wasn't so long an arduous. it's kind of a pain spending an hour and a half on something, then stepping back and thinking "wow that's not what it was supposed to look like at all"
[img_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1439792/i%20made%20an%20attempt.jpg[/img_thumb]
i think i added way too much contrast. i thought that was a good thing but now it ends up looking dumb, not like the picture. i don't really know what to do at this point.
does anyone know who it is at least?

You're making the same mistake that a lot of artists do when it comes to criticism which is to assume that all criticism must be accepted and followed
An artist is allowed to reject criticism if they disagree with it
I think the highlights on the trees are a bit bright and distracting considering the low contrasty pastely feel of the rest
I don't have anything to contribute, but does anyone have any cool drawings/mockups of the main character from lord of the flies?

Expressing yourself and ignorance are two different things y'know.

I actually agree with you about his art being dead and uninteresting as fuck but you're not doing yourself any favours here, people will disagree with you no matter what if you're being petulant about it

It's pretty, albeit a bit schizo.
The transition from sky to space is really weak though, and the clouds look enormous and slapped on imo. Get rid of all that, there's a lovely dusky gradient behind there which would really complete the mood if you just give it the whole top of the frame to breathe

Oh well, I tried. By the way, I remember hating your guts back a few months, you were the one 'asshole' that was impossible to please. Then I considered all the things you said and I remember, like it was yesterday, how happy I was when you rated one of my works 'artistic' for the first time :v:

Try to group the contrast a little. Especially the bridges, they stand out too much. Remember - high contrast and detail close to you, low contrast and detail away from you. Here's a very good video on it. He explains it really well.

I'm experiencing the weirdest bug with my tablet. It only seems to work in photoshop? I'm sure resetting photoshop will fix it but it's happened before so another solution would be preferable.
What is the best storage for my works online? Preferably free or one time payment, won't delete my stuff over time/limit, doesn't compress/resize, comfy.

You're acting as if there is only one right answer when there isn't.
There is nothing wrong with what you said in many respects, it's just that you're dictating imaginary rules on what art can and cannot be and how his work can not be classified as art because you don't think so.
You're literally stating opinions as facts, that's my gripe with your criticism, not the criticism itself.
There are styles more appropriate for certain expressions, but there are no wrong styles and there are no styles that can not be used in art, just because it leads itself to be useful for architecture because of it's emphasis on forms and lines does not make it unable to be used in art.
Ok I'm gonna speak on a personal level here
Subjectively I find Gunsmith's perspective paintings a bit too stiff. The lines and whatnot are so clean that, if it were a final product, I feel it would be more cost and time effective to just build it in 3D. If we look at this page from FZD's students, we see that even though they are all line-based perspective drawings, they feel a lot more dynamic and hand-drawn due to the varied line weight, etc.
As perspective practice though, I don't see any big issues with Gunsmith's current work. There's nothing to stop him from developing his culture/mood/composition design skills later on

My standards are slipping D:
Seriously though, when I started out the first like hundred things I posted got like one artistic at best. It's a pretty cutthroat environment, but you really know and feel it when you achieve things, and it tempers you for critique very well since there's little bias or sugarcoating.
This is fight club for developing artists :v:
