But there are also a ton of photo references there, you just need to look properly.
Working on one now, we'll see how this works out.

i'd really rather have smooth paper to paint on but i couldnt find any in the store i went to, is acrylic even supposed to be used on paper?

No paint is really supposed to go on paper except watercolours. See if your can get some Masonite board from your local warehouse store, its smooth and stiff I really love it for painting :)
did a quick photostudy with markers but i think it looks bad
Where can I get some good refs? Would help alot if I got a site that got everything or most of the stuff I need to learn/know covered.
Back a couple pages we were just talking about the best anatomy reference books, you should definitely invest in one of those.

@MenteR: I don't think it looks bad, especially in thumbnail. The values and shapes look pretty correct.
I think the weakest point is the lines that look kind of hairy/scribbly in a lot of spots, like the trees and the road surface. It looks like you maybe didn't go in 100% sure of how you were going to approach the picture with that particular medium. Which is fine, I mean, everything is a learning opportunity right :)

I'm afraid I don't have the files online anywhere, except for this camera phone picture :c

Who knows, maybe this will help me more than drawing silly soldiers.
I just tried drawing a picture using a tiny Bamboo and oh god it was a nightmare. I guess I am spoiled as hell.

I went from my first tablet that was for name signatures to an A4 sized Intuos3, needless to say it was an remarkable difference.

What do you use normally?
My first tablet was a graphite 4x5, glad I've got a larger one now.

I use a large-size Intuos4, which I love (cause I have wobbly hands and it lets me draw with my whole arm). At work I have this tiny Bamboo that looks about 4x5. I can barely even use it :c
actually ehh snip this
gonna have to get a new tablet. again
my second intuos 5 medium that has broken. they make them with some shitty ass detachable usb cable for no reason at all that constantly connects and disconnects from windows. my mate has the same issue but it hasn't gotten in his way as badly as it has for me. the last one i sent off for repair and they gave me a new one but cba waiting 2-3 months again for that only for it to break again. hopefully i'll just get a refund
ye olde mini bamboo in the meantime

you poor bby :(
Started practicing with some Loomis books a month ago or so and started doing some face studies, this is the first one that looks half decent (and that actually resembles the ref) I think.

Took a while to figure out how to handle her design. Still feels like she needs something.
Any ideas are appreciated.
You've got to tell us what kind of character design you had in mind for her first :)

Sort of a holds-her-own 1930's woman/love interest/ship's mechanic.
She looks a bit stern and well-kept for a mechanic, maybe a hint of tomboy flavour?
insomnia brought me this

as always i love your style but her left leg (from her point of view) looks broken.

Yea I get carried away with the curves when I'm doing the inital figure and don't bother to fix it later on.
Ima fix that
EDIT:
Made some changes to her leg, it's kind of an odd angle so i'm not totally sure if it's looking right yet.
Also mussed her hair up a bit more.

I'm not too sure if that earring fits with a ship mechanic.
Although with her hair fixed, I still think the way she stands as well as her face look too "elegant".
Unless her lover gifted her those, because, you know, it's your character and you're free to make up her own bio.
I think as a ships mechanic she ought to be a lot dirtier and scruffier - and in practical mechanic's clothing
I thought the stone pilot (essentially a mechanic) from The Edge Chronicles was pretty great

Yea I'll probably do a few more action poses with her to solidify her attitude.
It's tough trying to straddle a line between Amelia Earhart and Audrey Hepburn.
A4wide intuos4 at home
A5 intuos4 at work

ps I don't even draw
