It's a big, flying cock!
So here's my first painting from a series of 10 space related ones I'll have to finish by Math 10th (i'll post a better quality later cause you can't really see the textures and details on this one). It's a 30"x30" oil painting done with relatively large brushes and pallet knife which I've never tried before (I even stretched the canvas myself). Took about 5 days. I'll be doing the moon, mars, venus, and mercury (all to scale), and then the space station, space shuttle, astronaut, voyager 1, and a space nebula. I have like 3 days per painting so hopefully I finish on time hah

That's pretty damn awesome!
Fucking christ you guys are intimidating. [sp]sometimes I'm too scared to post stuff here heh[/sp]
I brought my acrylics and some small canvases to my base so I could paint a bit in my spare time. This week I've been working on this

Some fashion model sketches which were surprisingly fun to draw, I think they got progressively better too :)
http://www.hel-looks.com/20120920_01/ Got my refs from here, it's a pretty good reference site as the fashion is pretty ridiculous/interesting.

Um, it isn't all with one width
Um, it isn't all with one width
Close enough
It really doesn't follow the principles of conventionally good line weight
I'm really having trouble finishing this/
in a way I've doe the face, but I have no clue how to do the details now... what brush do I use to distinguish the facial areas, such as the lips nose etc?

work on your edges. The piece is falling apart because you have all soft edges. Find a distinction between hard and soft edges, and separate the face into hard planes.

Unless your brush is ridiculous then the answer is just downsize the brush you're using, you should be able to use any brush really
But also drop that and start working with reference
Even better, drop digital and start learning to draw with a pencil from life

Yeah that was pretty awkward haha
not sure if this is really the right place to post this, but I’ve written some writing recently and don’t really have anyone to critique it, so if anyone here has a chance, I’d appreciate it if someone could take a look at it:

Lamp design, inspired a bit by the Alien films

Not sure about the feet (if they were bolted to the ground the current feet would be alright but otherwise they seem a bit trip-prone). Also done a bunch of drawings to develop this initial design, add more balance to the head, etc
[editline]13th April 2013[/editline]
My lecturer said that the backdrop made it seem like more of an environment painting than the display of a design, so I replaced the backdrop with a simple gradient

Looks more like some antenna or other communication device to me. Also, these stokes on the background look pretty dirty, sorry.

Bugger your lecturer, giving your designs an unintrusive backdrop anchors them as opposed to floating in space. The gradient is better than say white but if you're gunning for professionalism, have it sit against something.
If you were going to the trouble though you might have dropped shadows from the lamps themselves, they're still floating a little from the background.
[editline]13th April 2013[/editline]
Also I think you've done a really good job apart from that on the background, contrary to anti's dirty strokes remark, I suggest not overworking it.
Oh and you might get a little bit more punch and a little more "this is a design/concept" aesthetic by sticking a thin black border around the piece

My thoughts exactly

Yeah I did have some ambient occlusion going on at first but I revised the composition several times and sort of lost those changes - I'll add it in later if I can
Looks more like some antenna or other communication device to me. Also, these stokes on the background look pretty dirty, sorry.
Ah; what makes them look like communication devices in instead of lights?
The background is supposed to be quite a concretey surface so I don't mind so much that it looks a bit dirty haha
So yeah I literally have no idea where the fuck to post this, but the forum title basically said "home made noise" so I assumed that meant this kind of stuff.
This is my first time ever trying anything like this so if you are experienced in this sort of thing give me some advice or slack.
And yeah, I wanted to post this because this was all done with an almost empty soda can and a shitty mic in about an hour with audacity, arranged in sony vegas.

Just imagine a creepy robot\gas mask mother fucker walking past in a weird atmosphere I guess.

Nope, I mean "dirty" in terms of technique mostly. Low opacity blurry strokes and such. If you want to make it look like concrete, it would be a good idea to add some minor details like on this one, or place some slaps with the texture brush.
And concerning the idea itself...well, I guess that's mostly the shape that makes it look like antenna for me. Oh yeah, and the fact that these things don't glow at all :)
Bugger your lecturer, giving your designs an unintrusive backdrop anchors them as opposed to floating in space. The gradient is better than say white but if you're gunning for professionalism, have it sit against something.
not rly
you should have it on a plain grey background, possibly with a darker band in the middle to make the subject pop a bit more
gradient is a no because gradients p much suck. background is a no because it's too busy and a waste of time. this is asset concept art, not environment or illustration work. anything you're doing that is extra to making that asset visible and workable for the art director and 3D modelers is a poor use of time and resources
Bugger your lecturer, giving your designs an unintrusive backdrop anchors them as opposed to floating in space. The gradient is better than say white but if you're gunning for professionalism, have it sit against something.
If you're going for professionalism then don't have a background. Concept art is not "art", it's concept art, you're supposed to show the concept of a design, the design needs all the focus which basically means you're only supposed to show the design.
Any extra details that isn't the design itself detracts from the concept you're showing, it takes attention away from the design and forgets it's purpose.
