i dont understand. what is extremely good 3d work? the thing the guy posted on the other page or the digital 3d art thread in general? whatever your answer: the point of a forum is to direct people to specific locations to talk about specific things, which allows for more focused and meaningful discussion about topics. it makes no sense to post 3d stuff in this thread.
Kso. This is a poem I pretty much just finished writing. It's probably one of my longest poems ever. The concept of it is actually a poetic conversation between Captain Nemo from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and Andrew Ryan from Bioshock. It is a page and a half long, but it doesn't really deserve a thread, so here it is. Keep in mind that I was trying to somewhat simulate an actual conversation, so I wasn't caring about poetic meter. Nemo: I fled to the depths of the great flowing sea In a vessel made of iron, in order to be free From a world that was corrupt, uncivil, and unfair, From losses and atrocities I could no longer bear. My companions, like me, were done with that world; On the surface, nothing good was before us unfurled, So we left the vices and evils of land, And took the waves of the ocean over the beaches of sand/ Ryan: My friend, my goals were exactly the same. I was sick of being a dollar bill, another pawn, a name. Up there, a man’s sweat, and blood, and tears Were not his, taken away by threats and leers. Washington, the Vatican, Moscow, all were like this, And the parasites, the leeches, preyed on whatever they missed. I was disgusted, and like you, I took my vast wealth, To restore to existence a semblance of health; I created a haven, built deep under the waves, Where the brightest of men could achieve what they craved, Where the greedy fingers of the government could not grasp, And where the parasites were shunned and persecuted like asps. Nemo: Ah, but you realize that society always hosts sin; For man always possesses corruption within. Such a haven would not last if humans occupied it; In their hands, progress and perfection would soon bring the opposite. Ryan: Yes, yes, I realize all that now! My vision was impossible, because man’s desires would not allow! Perhaps I was misguided, but you made a similar mistake; The great sea is beholden to nothing, not even for freedom’s sake. Nemo: The tragedies of my journey came at a lesser price than yours, But yes, you are right, sir; the sea obeys no lords. I found freedom from what I escaped, and found a sense of peace, Amid the South Pole, the proud Pacific, and the resolute shores of Greece; Ryan: And I enjoyed my reign on the thrones Of a city whose virtues were solely my own; Nemo: The bounty of the sea provided all that I needed, And I sailed, unrestricted, with all laws unheeded; Ryan: Likewise, I lived an autonomous and better life-or so I thought, For the great city crumbled, and its greatness came to naught. Nemo: Inevitably! And yet for me, the peaceful waves soon showed their cruelty; Several of my loyal companions were harshly consumed by the sea, And for all its iron coating, my vessel did not protect me long; The cunning waves tortured me with ice, teeth, and maelstrom. Ryan: It seems to me, captain, that what we suffered we did earn, And that from all of this, we both have lessons to learn. Nemo: You speak truly, sir, we must know perfect havens cannot exist; Know also that wherever we flee, certain problems will still persist. Ryan: Precisely; the pursuit of utopia is a totally pointless lust, As Man and Sea are both beings who are harsh, crafty, and unjust. Nemo: And yet, for all the tragedy, I feel very little regret; In my Nautilus I would gladly sail once again into the sunset. Ryan: And I will always prefer my city in the sea over those on the dry, high ground; If I could, I would return to Rapture as my domain and burial mound.

I didn't see much of a problem at the time because they have their own concept art and are attached to the game I'm working on.
3d art is still creative work. People post animation here sometimes even though there's a gif thread and that's good
not all animation is a gif. it defeats the purpose of the 3d thread to post 3d work here. you also sacrifice the feedback that the 3d regulars can give. im just trying to be helpful and direct people to where they're going to get the most crits, i dont understand why anyone would argue against what im saying. posting willy-nilly defeats the purpose of a forum. at that point why bother having an art section when you could just have an art thread in GD or something? the answer is you have more valuable conversations by organizing discussion. by not actively encouraging people to post in the right places you're really just hurting everyone tbh.
Well then why wont we make a 2d thread and keep this one for other shit that isnt 2d or 3d. You guys brought this on yourself really..
Well then why wont we make a 2d thread and keep this one for other shit that isnt 2d or 3d. You guys brought this on yourself really..
It works perfectly fine. Post 3D in 3D and the rest here. It's not that complicated, really.

I thought he might not get how to judge low poly modeling. :)
It works perfectly fine. Post 3D in 3D and the rest here. It's not that complicated, really.
Meh fair, I don't really give a shit since I rarely post in here anyway. Wait, MA college right? how are you these days man?

Bad proportions? Bad figure motion? Stance? I honestly have no idea. And I hardly care about anyone's impression. I came here to receive feedbacks on how to improve.
im still not sure what you said was extremely good, but as far as the dude's model goes i'd say it's far from "extremely good". it's not bad at all and he has a lot of things going for him, but it's the equivalent of a decent early college student studying game art. i see a lot of potential in him if he keeps at it. extremely good would be industry standard work, which it's frankly not. in fact nobody in the 3d thread is "extremely good", or at least i haven't ever seen work in there that could hold up with film/game industry quality work (browse polycount for like a minute to see the level of quality im talking about). there are people who are very close though.
I think the 3D design that was posted here before does belong here. Sure it's a 3D piece, but it's primarily a character design. The 3D thread seems to me to concern itself primarily with the technicalities of modelling and 3D rendering rather than design. I think we have to be subjective about it. At the end of the day it's hardly ruining anybody's day if somebody comes along and asks for critique on colour/form/composition/general design stuff regarding an image that was rendered from 3D
NO, STALKER, NO! No using computer post-processing on traditional media! NO! Reason: If you use post-processing to hide your errors, you will most likely not learn from them. Let your images be like they are, upload them like they are. See what's wrong and try to not make that mistake in your next drawing. You're only allowed to adjust levels to make if the photo/scan doesn't look contrasting enough, but don't overdo it. It's like making your body progress pics when workouting and then photoshopping yourself to be buff in every picture.
There's nothing wrong with using digital media to add to a traditional drawing Yes if it's actively being used to mask mistakes this is a problem but as a way of further pushing a piece of work further and experimenting with other processes it's fine. Not every drawing has to be presented as a basic pencil sketch for anatomy/form critique. It's also not as though he's incapable of looking at the original and evaluating it Also there is no 'you're only allowed to do this to a photo/scan if it has that problem'
I still don't understand what is exactly bad about my drawing (aside from what Chist said). Bad proportions? Bad figure motion? Stance? I honestly have no idea. And I hardly care about anyone's impression. I came here to receive feedbacks on how to improve.
Well, lots of your figures suffer from weak proportions, not physical weakness, but elements that are wrong that just throw the whole figure out of proportion. Its a lot more difficult to tell with this one (since you filter raped it in Photoshop :P) but one major thing I can see wrong with this one is the arch of the back in relation to the arch in the leg, the guy is clearly facing to the left of the picture but the bottom half of his leg and top half are facing different direction, the bottom facing forward almost completely and the top facing off to the left some where, this makes the knee look disjointed and the back look slightly disfigured, like its crooked. His left arm is too long and rather than bending at a joint is bent like its rubberized. also looking at the torso it looks too short in comparison to the legs as well. [editline]27th July 2013[/editline]
im still not sure what you said was extremely good, but as far as the dude's model goes i'd say it's far from "extremely good". it's not bad at all and he has a lot of things going for him, but it's the equivalent of a decent early college student studying game art. i see a lot of potential in him if he keeps at it. extremely good would be industry standard work, which it's frankly not. in fact nobody in the 3d thread is "extremely good", or at least i haven't ever seen work in there that could hold up with film/game industry quality work (browse polycount for like a minute to see the level of quality im talking about). there are people who are very close though.
Its easily one of the best out of that thread, (good) low poly stuff is far more complicated (from a design perspective) than high poly stuff, you have literally no room for mistakes and the model relies heavily on texture work, admittedly mapping a low poly model can be easier, but this means that you have no shadows thrown off geometry from the model its self, so your normals and specs have to be perfect. And this ticks all those boxes, that's why I'd judge it as extremely good. Also, my work is going into a game :P So now you know one person, none of the shit I've posted in there mind, I've improved 3 fold from then. If anyone is interested btw its this game http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/railboy/frontiers-explore-discover-survive Alpha atm, but I'm making the models for the final release next year.
(since you filter raped it in Photoshop :P)
Oops, sorry. Here's the masturbated version. [t]http://puu.sh/3N13E.jpg[/t] [SUB]I know, fingerprints.[/SUB]

[t]http://puu.sh/3N13E.jpg[/t] [SUB]I know, fingerprints.[/SUB]
I have no idea why you edited this, that values are good! The smoke especially is a lot more volumetric like this! I still think my crit was right on this one, also Id add another, the line for his pecks (or whatever :L) slants upward where as it should slant downward a tad more to match up with the rest of his torso.
pecks.
Nooooo I google'd this while my parents were still in my room and now they think I'm gay.
Nooooo I google'd this while my parents were still in my room and now they think I'm gay.
HAHAHAHAHA oh god
Thanks a lot of the feedback on the model, for those who are interested, the model can't have lightning at all(not even simple shading) so you only have a diffuse map to work with and it must be <1000 tris for boss monsters and <300 for any other enemy. We are aiming more or less for subway surfers quality (models posted on polycount) but I'm the only modeler and they were a full professional team so sometimes I have to cut some corners in order to finish the game. Polycount is a great place to see great quality work though, the low-poly thread is the most similar in style. @Mr cake fingers I have been following Frontiers for some months now on reddit and it looks quite interesting, good luck with the project, it is very ambitious. Thanks again for the feedback, I'm actually a programmer so every feedback on the artistic side of things is really helpful.

It's the line for the shadow, while I was shading the pencil snapped there so it left a thick black line (using mechanical with 2B Ain Leads). The line for the pecks is the double-line next to it. Same thing happened to the front legs. Thanks for the invaluable feedbacks!
I spent the last two days drawing this. It was incredibly painstaking and I think I have rickets now.
