give me a cool environment idea to paint!
futuristic 70's neon cyberpunk with prostitutes having combovers and fawx hawks strolling about in a abandoned alleyway with bright blurred neon signs in the back (green/pink)

I guess this falls here, doing a clay sculpt of one of the pillars of Argonath. It's kind of a mash up of all the different references I've picked up. Still a lot to do...
The hand is a little thick and the face (lip area) could use a little more work, but hey, it's a WIP and it looks awesome so far!
I know, the mouth is too small and too low. Will fix that and other things next thursday. :)
Love it, I could never do anything like this :L How long would you say youd spent on it? on another note Ill be throwing up a wip of my first (ever? Yeh I guess it is) painting.
I'm sure you could, the scultpting course has 90% total beginners and quite a few of them made better reliefs of live model than I did. All it takes is time. And the relief thing was like 30-40h. On this I've worked maybe 10-12 hours now.
flash is cool Though I've got some problems with extracting gifs. Does anyone know how to get rid off those annoying little dots? Or can anyone recommend something to create lossless gifs from swf files?
[img_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8557473/2013-04-13%2023.19.20.jpg[/img_thumb] Sorry for the quality, ill scan in the finished thing eventually, but this is where im at atm, its my first painting and im working it in gouache...I dont really know what...gouache...is exactly, but im loving working with it :) Tips on how I should go about finishing/improving this would (as always) be very useful.
So while doin' some real quick thumbnails for creatures and after drawing a bunch of serious and threatening creatures, this goofy praying mantis guy came to be. I'm wondering if I should take it to a fully developed and finished piece. I think it would be a nice departure from what I normally do. Any thoughts or comments?
dont do perpendicular hatching, it just looks like a grid
dont do perpendicular hatching, it just looks like a grid
Gotcha. Any specific way of doing it that you'd recommend?
I'm still trying to learn how to draw, and have now been experimenting with colors in Photoshop. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/qm106OL.jpg[/thumb] It's so hard... Are there any good resources that deals with coloring and shading etc?
Gotcha. Any specific way of doing it that you'd recommend?
i always get asked this question but I never know how to really answer it. Just go with the flow of it I guess. You have to go with the shape of the object youre drawing. In the end you should not only demonstrate the color of the object, but also the shape and texture of it. for example, why did you do the lines you did in the eyes? Because thats the form right?

Pick a different color that the format doesn't hate. I could also be wrong, but I don't think there is such a thing as a "lossless gif".

For the eyes, I was just trying to establish the form super quick (being a thumbnail). So instead of just dropping in lines like a grid (which flattens it out), let the lines flow over the shape and help establish the form?
Careful about d3t's hatching advice, his hatching is bonkers he's not trustworthy :v:
not rly you should have it on a plain grey background, possibly with a darker band in the middle to make the subject pop a bit more gradient is a no because gradients p much suck. background is a no because it's too busy and a waste of time. this is asset concept art, not environment or illustration work. anything you're doing that is extra to making that asset visible and workable for the art director and 3D modelers is a poor use of time and resources
What you said in bold is the same as what I said except more specific I should have specified not to paint full backgrounds, but in this case Mal's background is minimal enough that it works just fine imo. A black stroke would have been better but I already said that. Having your concept framed on another tone/colour/texture/pattern (often partially breaking the frame) is common practice. Even if there's nothing but the broken line of the frame dropped behind the design, it grounds the object. Having no background is almost childish That said if you already have a big job and you're churning out lots of designs you could certainly drop this approach. If you're producing one thing (e.g a lamp design) then it's not in any way a waste of time to spend a few minutes or even a few seconds making the concept really presentable for your client. Presenting something floating on a completely blank background is just mugging yourself off, says I'm an amateur
If you're going for professionalism then don't have a background. Concept art is not "art", it's concept art, you're supposed to show the concept of a design, the design needs all the focus which basically means you're only supposed to show the design. Any extra details that isn't the design itself detracts from the concept you're showing, it takes attention away from the design and forgets it's purpose.
See above
Careful about d3t's hatching advice, his hatching is bonkers he's not trustworthy :v:
damn it you, I hadnt drawn in ages, but I know how it works, cut me some slack haha

So someone just messaged me about wanting to buy this for $600 and he'll pay for p&p... I'm not sure if he's completely certain but wtf I was expecting this much positive reaction. I kinda wanted to get all 10 paintings featured in a gallery or something but 600 is too much to pass on.

I was just trying to get better at getting ideas and forms down as quick as possible (before I forget em'). So for pen, maybe I'll try some new stuff for blocking in shadow. Maybe prisma markers. Anyway, here is an older piece that I dug up on my hard drive that I drew 2 years ago (sorry for the poor resolution!). I've taken a long break from 2d work to learn 3D modeling and digital sculpting, so now its time to shake off all that rust. It's the owl on the cover of the Deftones album Diamond Eyes. Even though I drew it a long time ago, I'm starting to really get into creature and character design and I would love some critique or feedback on it so I can learn from the mistakes of my older work. Thanks!

Same thing as above, older work, any critique or comments would be much appreciated! (I don't have a scanner atm sooooo yeah:v:)
holy shit How large is it?
30"x30"... I don't really want to sell it but I mean you know

I need to develop a stronger work ethic...
and arent you supposed to get to sell them there too? But 600$ sounds like a really good deal. I personally wouldnt put such a price on it but you got an opportunity here [editline]14th April 2013[/editline] ninjad
I didn't I said I would like to get them in a gallery as in have all my originals when I'm done. But idk I'll probably sell it...
yeah well not these because you didnt finish the other ones yet but if you say you have others, what type of gallery is it, and how did you get to get your stuff in there and all that, thats what Im curious about
