"the others" are the ones that I haven't started yet..
Probably the longest I've ever spent on one sprite. The fact that it's not quite symmetrical added a lot of work.

Surely you could have copied and pasted then made any asymmetrical adjustments?
That's probably what he did. Even so there's quite a bit of asymmetry.

I'm sure you're aware but DoD's drawing tool is a poor substitute for.. well for any program you could make art with
[QUOTE=TraceTres;40271626]Gotcha. Any specific way of doing it that you'd recommend?[/QUOTE]
Don't listen to him. (No offence, D3TBS). It depends on the texture you want to create and overall style of the picture.
Perpendicular?
[img_thumb]http://www.wetcanvas.com/Community/images/21-May-2010/210562-Ein_stein.jpg[/img_thumb]
Or mix it with cross-hatching?
[img_thumb]http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GvS5_5mH93w/TjPLan0YOII/AAAAAAAABnQ/Ob7dcFHUqIM/s1600/fist-crosshatching-1.jpg[/img_thumb]
Maybe some random hatching in different directions?
[img_thumb]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3605/3515255818_1a180890e5.jpg[/img_thumb]
Or add more chaos?

You can even combine everything.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/EpQZc.jpg[/img_thumb]
(These pictures are made by different artists with different skill levels, but you get the point)
And remember to be consistent. Don't start a piece in one style and end it in another. Plan ahead.

You should try to do longer strokes on the lineart. Now it's really messy with lots of small stubby strokes. It should flow with a few single, long strokes.

Actually the people who drew theese pictures still use their lines to show the shape of the head and its not simply straight perpendicular. And for example in that random one, its not actually random, because every direction shows a different side of the face.
I just dont like perpendicular cross hatching because it kills a lot of the drawings character and makes it stand out so much. Thats why I dont really recommend it. If you like it go ahead.

Careful about being the blind leading the blind
Showing examples is cool but discrediting someone's advice and then replacing it with your own poorer advice isn't helping much. Trace might gain something from looking at accomplished artist's work but things like "random hatching in different directions" or "add more chaos" is just completely wrong

d3t barely gave any usable advice in his post but at least he got a very general correct idea across

What's wrong about saying he should experiment and try different stuff? What's wrong about saying 'don't listen to that' when someone says "Don't do this style. Never Ever"

Cool, I'll work on that. I'm guessing there is no real technique behind long strokes with flow, except loads of practice?
practice and elbow (and shoulder) grease
Could any of you guys direct me to some 'urban' artists? I dont mean street art or graffiti, im talking artists of urban environments, like Edward Hopper, people who do art based around buildings and other structures. Ive found a few people but im finding it difficult since I dont know what you would call an artist who creates work on that kind of stuff :/

I really recommend that thread, very useful stuff if you wanna learn how to do it properly.

He said not to do a uniform flat crosshatch from border to border on a form, which is completely correct. It's not a style it's just a mistake.
And there's nothing wrong with doing different things but your descriptions betray a lack of any understanding of how to employ said techniques, so if Trace was to follow your descriptions he would get bad results.

you mean painters? I think its just realism, but the thing is that he liked to paint the stuff he painted, I dont think theres no name for that because its not really specific
that's a shame, turns out almost straight after I posted that I found 2 more painters anyway :P Richard Haas and Charles Sheeler for anyone who was interested

Thanks for the advice! It's been a long time since I've done traditional so I have a lot of work to do to get back into my drawing form. Really appreciate the advice and I'll be experimenting with how I shade my thumbnails and my hatch work.

Yes. Game's still fun to me, though.
I guess what I'm wondering, though, is uh... Based on that, do you see potential?
[QUOTE=MakoSkyDub;40278806]He said not to do a uniform flat crosshatch from border to border on a form[/QUOTE]
Oh really? where?
[QUOTE=D3TBS;40271550]dont do perpendicular hatching[/QUOTE]

Informing that there's different hatching styles without giving any unneeded instructions (You have to be a 'deviantart appreciation station' featured artist to not realize where to use/not use different techniques after one or two failed attempts) is better than outright saying "Don't do this style because it doesn't fit in this particular example you've drawn today"
I'm logging off of this discussion.
