Thanks NateDude. I appreciate it
Got a tablet yesterday, here's my first painting and my first photo study. Any tips for using a tablet/ painting? P.S. I color picked from the ref, was lazy.

Tip #1: don't colour pick from your ref
Is this acceptable for in my portfolio? I personally think it's good enough, only thing that bothers me is that this is the only concept sheet in my whole portfolio so it feels like it doesnt fit in there. but im planning on making more to balance it out.

spread dat shit out. it's way too cramped

in terms of painting i like the shapes n stuff and the designs are pretty cool but the material definition is way off on a few of them - not enough specular by a long way. bottom and top right stand out the most on that note
I would consider playing it safe with a grey background rather than black. Absolute portrayal of mood (etc) can come later; this looks like it's supposed to be showing off props (therefore designs) in quite an isolated way (not in a particular scene); therefore you want to show them as clearly as possible
They shouldn't all be floating on black like that, also you've put them together very tightly and very close to the bottom, bottom and ONE side (why the gap on the right?)
The orange light sources are really weak
Also as far as making concept art goes, there's a strong design element to it which means it should be absolutely clear what the objects are and their scale and so on
I'm assuming they're battle helms, but they could just as easily be shields, say (the top left could be a shoulder pad). In the case of their being helms, only the top left one looks like it has a back to it so that it could be worn as it is, the others look more like masks. Also that one would be easily exploited in combat, no one in their right mind would fight in that. Those weird bandage rivet things don't match the time period you would expect these to belong to either, and make it look really flimsy. The only one you half-reasonably see out of is the top right, the rest would cover your eyes. So despite looking interesting (there's some nice rendering although they go flat in a lot of places) the designs themselves are very poor
If you're making your portfolio for yourself then it's alright, but if you're hoping to catch someone's eye or build a following or get work even, I don't think your overall level or ability in art is high enough. Especially for anything relating to concept art, to make it in that field you have to be one savvy motherfucker
Sorry to be harsh, I don't like doing it- well alright that's a fib but it's for your benefit :v:

Whoops missed chesty and mal
But there you have it
I think that's a bit too harsh - your portfolio doesn't have to be perfect. You don't have to aim at Hollywood early on in your career. I don't have much professional experience at all, but maybe don't be deterred from looking at smaller studios at the moment. This is obviously a question much better suited to an industry professional.

This so much, I used to colour pick from time to time a long while ago and all I learned was that it's dumb.
You don't need to think about anything so you don't learn anything new.
The same goes with tracing.

It should be as perfect as you can reasonably make it though
It is your sales pitch after all, jobwise
xephio i like the new protfolio. I think you get the internship in Germany :)
i finished the tower (with new shading, stairs and the surface).
it took forever to finish this one. when animated there come smoke out of the chimney and a oranje glow through the door and windows.

Thanks guys for all the comments, its great getting so much feedback so fast
@maloof. im sort of relieved that the sheet layout and colour are some of the issues instead of the overall quality of my work, and ill be sure to change the sheet.
@chesty. defining materials is still one of the things i havent tackled on before and ive been noticing it myself in my work way too long, ill try to work on that for sure
@mako. yes theyre all supposed to be battle helms and youre right when you say some of them look like shields or could be shoulder pads, I obviously have a long long way to go in design, right now im just painting stuff that looks cool ignoring logic lol
but youre kinda overreacting on the portfolio bit, i know it's not perfect but its the best ive got and don't be mistaken, i'm in my third year and we have to go on internship in about 6 months, so it's a school thing. I just got 19 and havent worked in any studio before, its not like I'm trying to impress some AAA studio or anything, more like a big company where only a small part of it makes shitty iphone games with super low budget to promote their name
but still obviously i have alot to work on and i'm really gonna give my 100% for it.

Thanks for the advice, I stay away from tracing in general, I understand the color picking though. The object I chose ending up being really faceted and complex so I got a bit intimidated with the color choice. Any tips on brushwork, blending, etc?

Check your perspective on the roof. Unless it's intentionally meant to look like it's sagging, the right end of the roof is much lower than the left end.

This is like the holy grail of video lessons for a beginner digital artist.
Go through the videos one by one in order. Focus and think while watching the video.
And lastly do not forget to practice, practice is pretty much everything.
