I'm probably not correct, though.
No, that's not it.
It's heavily influenced by one of my favorite painters, but he's not very famous outside of sweden.
do you use pen for the outlines?
Yes, a very basic fountain pen dipped in an even more basic ink.
May I ask where you started to learn how to do environments? I really want to start doing some, but don't know where to start. I like it BTW. Maybe a little too brown though.
Feng Zhu's design cinema videos help a lot. So does understanding perspective, aerial perspective, lighting, etc. I'm still trying to work some of these out myself, but really just start doodling and maybe some observational drawing

I feel the shape language doesn't say 'hug bot' all that well - I'm getting a more disturbing vibe from it
I think a 'hug bot' would be more humanoid, much softer and have a lot more rounded and plump shapes
Often in a design, everything should speak towards creating a unified character. Those random shapes sticking out of the back, that square head, etc, don't seem to serve the purpose of creating a hug-bot. A hug bot ought to be welcoming and nurturing-looking. If you took the smiley face away from this design would it appear friendly and nurturing?
[editline]23rd September 2013[/editline]
just some things to think about
I just got the unintentionally hilarious image of a robot with tank treds and an upper body with molded curved arms jutting forwards, like the entire upper body is a claw with a head on it.

Yeah, I agree completely but this was originally just a form and value practice, the name only comes from the pose which I ended up picking. Plus being completely metal doesn't really add to the hug factor
Man I would die of boredom in ten seconds flat of drawing thumbnails for a cube-like object

Oh I getcha
I always saw it as cube-like, but I'm doing a bunch of varied shapes and I'll pick a couple to carry on with
I think you should diversify the silhouettes, might make them a bit more visually interesting
I actually started with black silhouettes before I realised that something so small that also needed to be more or less boxy (no significant protrusions that would be difficult to have in your pocket) would be better drawn with line
I'm not sure how I could diversify the silhouettes more beyond drawing them in action (lids removed or swung up on their hinges, etc). What do you think?
Is there a program or website that allows me to put a body in different poses as reference for my drawings?
please don't say garry's mod, I need a serious reply if possible.

Cant make your own but theres a bunch on here you can look at different angles: http://www.posemaniacs.com/
I have yet to find a good posing program for reference, I used some dumb little thing starting with Q meant for animation since it was easy to pose but the models werent very good.
edit:
Yeah Pm isnt exactly fantastic either but when i say not very good in reference to the program I had I mean the arms disconnected when you moved them forward, it was only a very general reference rather than having actual useful form because the joins didnt stretch you just had holes everywhere :v
Worth noting the models aren't too good on PM.com either
just a nebula doodle

I think it's kind of pissing away the intrigue of scraperboard when people slap digital colour overlays on top
I can also see where you've edited the gap in the lines for the water, it's really eye-catchingly fuzzy and out of place. Don't marry the two things, scraper has an old-style integrity that really sells it, if you're going to bother using it for a piece in the first place. Keep it crisp, black and white and generally un-fucked-with :v:

I do agree, and that's why I was trying to keep it to toned down, more subtle colors. And I've definitely seen color applied to scratchboard well, but I just slapped it on there in a few seconds to give the idea.
Either way though, I am liking it better in black and white as well.
