I hope that's the name of the character and not YOUR name as a watermark
It is my name as a watermark simply because this was done for a client and was uploaded as a preview before he paid me, most of my images are not watermarked as you can see by the rest of my posts, but I didn't upload a final image of this one, instead I just sent him the PSD.
Ah alright, that's understandable I suppose Do you get your commissions from reddit or something?
It's mostly word of mouth, I used to do a lot of stuff for free when I was just starting out and I kinda got passed around doing things like that for £1 - 3, but now I've started a HND course and I'm a bit bogged down by that now'
The perspective on the vehicle is a bit bizarre, and it looks like it's moving with all that dust kicking up from the tyres
Well, the idea about the dust was that since winds on Mars are really rare and it has lower gravity, dust can fly for a while (may be for 5-10 minutes or so) before settling. Don't really know if it's right or complete drivel though. And hopefully I'll fix these perspective mistakes this evening, because you're not the first who tell me about them.
If I want to begin learning how to draw, someone who really have had no previous experience or skills other than messing about - where should I start? Do I start reading some theory or should I start practical and just draw what I feel like for a while or do both?
I would advise making proportion the very first thing you start with - learn to draw the correct shapes that you see in front of you. Look up measuring and apply it, draw the simplest damn things you can find from life. Don't spare a thought for rendering forms or any of that, just aim for ACCURACY. Always remember that you're trying to reproduce what your eye can see, not reconstruct the subject on paper based on what you know. Don't spend too long on any one drawing, and don't be precious about anything you do. [editline]29th September 2013[/editline] Line drawings.
To add to that, unless you're some magical drawing genie, your first drawings will most likely be god awful as is everyone's, don't let yourself be disheartened by it, over time you'll improve drastically, you probably won't even notice it until you compare your first drawings with your latest'

[editline]29th September 2013[/editline] Line drawings.
So I've been doing exactly that unconsciously on my drawings(Mainly focusing on limbs and other body parts) and after hearing your advise I tried out drawing my broken headphones and holy shit I just noticed I had a huge improvement in my drawing skills. I could never draw an object just from looking at it a couple of months ago. Anyway, can you guys give me tips on drawing poses? I still can't wrap my mind on drawing people in motion and that kind of stuff. Here's an attempt at drawing a guy throwing a ball but something just feels off. [t]http://i.imgur.com/HPP3hYx.jpg[/t]
Image trace is really efficient in CS6 you know So you can paint in PS or whatever and then make it vector without the drudgery of actually using IL [editline]28th September 2013[/editline] :v:
aw <3 [editline]28th September 2013[/editline]
This space vandal is writing his favorite football team name.
Here's an attempt at drawing a guy throwing a ball but something just feels off. [t]http://i.imgur.com/HPP3hYx.jpg[/t]
I think the neck, spine, and leg positioning gives the impression that he's leaning back to catch the ball rather than about to throw it, in which he would be leaning more on the forward leg, the back arm would be lower, the front higher, and the neck stretched forward. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/53550883/edited.jpg[/t] here's a quick edit, but I don't think it conveys what I mean that well.
If only I could be so grossly incandescent... knight solaire, dark souls, 10 mins (hence crappy hand)

What did you say, thread? More mantises? Okay... (My scanner refuses to scan that left tarsus right for some reason)

Standard(although theres variations within this) is one head for the head, one head to the chest, one to the belly button, one to the crotch, one to mid thigh one to just below knee and one more(ish) to the ground. Pay attention to that and do some more from life or photo drawings of people doing stuff and it will build into your brain instinctively. His legs are pretty short, being about the same length as his arms makes it look pretty weird.
what do you guys think could change? i aint touching the guy or the horse hes on im done with that shit but maybe the cart tracks on the road or the fully armoured archers on the wall or anything else could change?
the perspective looks kinda wonky... can't put my finger on it.
what do you guys think could change? i aint touching the guy or the horse hes on im done with that shit but maybe the cart tracks on the road or the fully armoured archers on the wall or anything else could change?
the gold dome feels like it's facing the camera more than the building, as well as the stairs. the road could also taper a bit more from the stairs. the door's right side(facing the camera) should dip down more to match the wall angle. those are the only issues I see so far, perspective-wise.
I think it looks strange with the path coming at an angle like that from the building. It should be curved a bit so that... it fixes the perspective (??? I don't know I'm bad at explaining). It would be implied that the path continues on this arc to follow underneath the horse while coming to the building straight on. Like this'n: Also what the chap said above me, the golden dome, and the segment beneath the dome, if I might add, look pointed more towards the viewer than it should be? [editline]28th September 2013[/editline] Also I tried fiddling with transparency for once for a spinny whirly doodad effect.
what do you guys think could change? i aint touching the guy or the horse hes on im done with that shit but maybe the cart tracks on the road or the fully armoured archers on the wall or anything else could change?
An important bit to remember is that small touches and referencing real world places can add a whole big sense of realism. For instance - why are the tracks leading right up to the steps? In a grand place such as this you could have something like that circular driveway with a fountain in the middle that posh houses have, or stables off to the side, or anything similar. I'd also say that such a big and fancy place like this would have a paved driveway leading up to it, not just dirt and leaves. I reckon the focal point that stands out most clearly is that yellow dome - but why? Unless it's a significant part of the story, I'd use other visual cues to draw the eye to a different area. Maybe the doorway? A figure silhouetted against a light in the doorway could work well to clearly establish a focal point here. I wish I had time to say more, but I gotta skedoodle. This video is a pretty useful introduction to some compositional ideas [editline]29th September 2013[/editline] there are further parts in that series but they should pop up in the youtube side bar which is handy dandy It's a real nice image though, and I'm glad to see your still painting! Keep it up broseph
what do you guys think could change? i aint touching the guy or the horse hes on im done with that shit but maybe the cart tracks on the road or the fully armoured archers on the wall or anything else could change?
I actually like the colors of the piece, the composition and details could be improved though, but the really weird thing about the image is the perspective/field of view imo, everything just seems to be on your face and it causes it to lose depth.
A wip from a sketch I made earlier today. Any thoughts on the form rendering and/or the design of it? Got dem' long legs doe [IMG_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17993036/Sketches%20001.png[/IMG_thumb]
Seems reminiscent of the Prometheans from Halo 4.
