dtmech i think you should probably focus more on getting the painting fleshed out much quicker and then you can smooth it out and make it prettier/more detailed at the end. really you should be nailing your colours, values, and forms, and then moving on to refining the piece
i know this because i used to work like you do and it always took me like 40 hours to get anything done
It's pretty normal to use big smooth brushes in the beginning to roughly chalk out lighting/volume imo. It's easier, and allows you to save brush strokes. Of course then you will need to define and diversify colours and forms, but this approach "from smooth to sharp and details" has it's right to exist

Lilyo what art school are you going to that actually teaches you how to draw?
We had some life drawing and a tiny bit of other drawing theory but mostly all we get taught is how to think conceptually

School of Visual Arts, majoring in Illustration cause it's the most versatile skill set to learn. It's very tricky to get the right classes though. I changed my painting class cause the teacher wasn't doing anything, and now I'm learning under an extremely talented and knowledgeable painter which I love. For drawing we're not really learning HOW to draw, but we do get a lot of useful assignments in class and outside. I usually take it a step above and try to do more than was required though. I looked up all the teachers before selecting my schedule and tried to stay away from the abstract and conceptual teachers, and instead make sure ill be doing all technical work. Doesn't really make sense to jump into conceptuality before really full learning how to do everything technically.
E: the visual computing class is so fucking boring though, the dude is teaching us how to make the most useless shit in illustrator. I find it's better sometimes to take the lower grade and just work on your own stuff or talk to the teacher to see if you can work at a different pace and with different material.

true but in the examples shown it was more like "super smooth and crisply finished to sharp details later" rather than "smooth sketching to refinement and sharp details"

Finished. Gimme crits, I gotta sell prints soon

e: or grayscale? http://i1.minus.com/ibdhyedf4fRMzu.png I like color more
Color version for sure. I really like the whole top half of the body, though there are two things that bother me personally.
I'm not a fan of the smoke color for some reason, it reminds me of mustard.
Also the leg part, where it is cut off, it creates some tension for me.
Other than that I love it.
For me the brushstrokes are too intrusive, the jacket in particular is very muddy, and the cigar smoke is pretty excessive and doesn't gel with the style of the rest of it
Also the bg grey screams "default" and it feels like there's too much space that he's floating in
The sig is yuck, your name is illegible (not in a pleasing way, in a random ugly scribble way) and the 2013 with the underline is childish
For the huge negative space and the terrible/lack of background alone, I wouldn't consider buying a print of that
[editline]13th October 2013[/editline]
I should mention that I like the painterly look of the face, and there's a few nice spots lower down, the shirt in the middle, the hands are very nice. But on the whole, I'm not sold

Try to diversify your palette, because now it looks so pure yellow and has no sighs of another colours. It could be a good idea to make this smoke and the lighting of his right shoulder blue to add some volume maybe.
And why don't you blend your strokes? I mean, low opacity strokes are ok when you're sketching, but they look so messily on the finished piece.
As for your question, I vote for grayscale.

it looks great for a study but not for a piece i'd buy as a print.
keep doing these however, it's great practice and the final result is satisfying. color looks better btw.
[editline]13th October 2013[/editline]
the gray background looks really bland too, and the smoke looks cheap. the figure looks great tho!

I'm going off of a reference. The smoke is mustard green as it is in the show from the chemical reaction.
This was never supposed to be anything more than a practice but 5 people already requested a print of the original grayscale version, so i thought I might as well keep working on it to at least make it colored. Looking at it from my laptop makes it look completely different than on the Mac, but I don't get how that could be cause both monitors are using the same color profiles and calibrations. It definitely looks a lot more saturated on the mac, i honestly don't know which version to go with as the "correct" one. Maybe I should just print it and see how it looks then.
Changing the strokes or blending them would mean reworking the entire thing, something I never even intended on doing. Changing the colors would mean changing the entire theme of the show. Idk how to sign something honestly. The layers have long been merged so i can't rework the background. Idk why anyone would want to buy a print of this but I have to matte and mail 5 copies by next week lol

Well, I just tried to express what I would like to change in your piece if I were you, nothing more. It's for you to decide.
As for the layers, I usually merge them after basic colouring of the sketch, and after that I work on one single layer. So it's not something unreal to even time consuming to blend some strokes. But, as i've said, it's just my personal thoughts.
They wanna buy a print because of the subject matter I assume

Sounds like background music from commie-era VCR's about microorganisms they show in Polish elementary schools. Seriously.

A lot.
i dont really use references a lot, but I make sure to observe how shit looks while I go about my day, and I try to memorize it from that.

Yeah I know, I'm gonna keep working on it, i'm just conflicted whether to spend all this time on it when I could be working on other stuff. I guess I'll take a gamble and try to improve it and hope more people buy it once I repost it.
