I use Painter, but it isn't simple or easy to use, it's kind of a bitch actually
Outside of that I would recommend PS, but I know that's outside your price range. I'm not really familiar with any free or cheap software other than GIMP, which I wouldn't paint in simply because I have better options
There's also Krita.
I tried out both the sketchbook pro and artrage demos.
Artrage has some very awesome paints, I love the watercolours. Sketchbook has some good pencils but tbh I don't much care about that.
I tried Krita and I prefer it to both of them. It doesn't have Artrage's awesome paint blending but that's not really something I want anyway.
A few things I like about Krita - basic brushes and texture brushes with good performance, a convenient and configurable radial menu, a good layer system, easily accessible size and opacity properties, full screen mode, and convenient default keyboard shortcuts.
The fact that it's free is a great bonus but I'd gladly pay for it.
I recommend giving it a go to anyone who does or wants to digital paint. Thanks for the recommendation JohnnyOnFlame!
hey inmonkeygod, how'd you animate your thingy? Ive missed the thread
Here's a breakdown gif thingy. Sorta just start off with a sketch animation draft to get an idea and then work from there.
I use Photoshop CS6's timeline with it's video layer. It's pretty useful with it's onion skins and whatnot. Then I export it to TV Paint to render it.
As for angles being different among hands, feet, chest and whatnot, I guess I was being too ambitious with my walk cycle since this is my first year for Animation :v: But that's why I have you guys to help me out.
incoming lady OC

Dodger the harpy, who is, along with the puppet guy, the second out of seven OCs I have to draw.
Did my first proper digital painting today. Up until now I haven't really used colour at all, just pencil. No reference, used Krita.
Constructive criticism would be really helpful so I don't waste time doing stuff wrong. I know the perspective is slightly unusual on the roof of the building.

use bigger brush strokes/block stuff out/dont scribble with tiny brushes/dont use a light grey overlay for shadows, look at how hue and colour change for shadows and highlights/more photostudies
something small to satisfy the drawing tooth :)

Your biggest issue, which is what 99% of newer digital painters experience, is that overall your image is very flat. Colors and values are dull, and the best way to grow out of this, as I'm aware, is firstly to practice in black and white to better master value and contrast, and just to study hard and practice often. It's a cool composition, keep at it and you'll see yourself making leaps and bounds in no time.

aw fuck missed a whole page again sorry computers
Another update from the mobile game, this time it's the transition scenario. To make the character go from one scenario to another, the player enters a portal and goes to this transition scenario, in this transition we load the assets for the next scenario etc, after that is done, the player enters another portal and finally goes to the new scenario.

It reminds me of Audiosurf for some reason.

It wasn't an inspiration but I do see some resemblance :v: at first I was going for a Mario Rainbow Road look, but it evolved into that.

you should do some bigger pieces in this cartoony style, it's cool
illustration thing for a game concept doc i've gotta do for uni

obviously inspired/referenced from lots of fightpunch stuff
Nice stuff. The headpiece thing is a bit flat (well extremely flat) and I'm not sure about those blurry shards under the hand. I guess they work conceptually but I dunno if they add to the piece.
thanks for the feedback. yeh it's weird i think i struggle most with the simplest forms you know. need to go back to basics and do some studies of spheres
Sounds torturous hah
good luck
Colord art concept that I made for animation before, but got cancelled due to no time..
still keeping the animation assets and its in 35% completion...Now I have no motivation to continue it
although my friends insist me to do so after I showed them first part of it..

Adding some saturated (may be red) stripes to that white area may be a good idea to drag attention to what you want. The thing is that now everything is pretty dull (not that it's bad, just saying), so can't really say what I should look at first.
And, as it has already been said above, niсe stuff.
thanks antianan. i was thinking about your previous comments as i was painting it and was considering colour splashes and maybe more saturated shadows but i chose against it this time just for stylistic reasons. thanks a lot though it means a lot that you take the time to have a think about my pieces

I see that you've done it very carefully but I still don't agree with using handwriting like that on concept art
It CAN look great if you write like an industrial designer or something, but I don't think your writing is very suited to professional presentation

Why is there no zero?

I kind of understand what you mean but the definite context here is 'a presentation to a design team' so it's not aiming to be overly professional
I'm also referencing the majority of the in-house concept art that I've seen, much of which uses hand-written notes and callouts rather than careful typography
Eg 1, 2, 3
Their writing is rather better suited to the task than yours in my opinion, yours is tall and friendly and informal looking, not the best for labeling machine parts
Also there's a LOT of notation on yours, as well as indicator lines. Hence you'd be better off with a typeface. Yours is a thorough diagram after all, they just put the names of the pieces or a note or two.
[editline]27th October 2013[/editline]
I'm sure it doesn't really matter but for something in your portfolio I think it's worth being pedantic. I would snag on that if I was looking at your stuff, I'm positive an art director would as well
Can somebody edit this picture?

I want the first line to say, "Fuck off at once"
And the last line to say, "Fuck off all the same"
'Watson' to say 'Faggot'
'S.H' to say 'O.P'
Similar font.
Anybody keen?
