because i wanted to/ cover up my innability to make nice digital paintings
I'm sure I don't have to tell you that anything you do to that effect will hinder your learning. So I won't.
because i wanted to/ cover up my innability to make nice digital paintings
Ironically enough you're making it worse lol
because i wanted to/ cover up my innability to make nice digital paintings
It'll be easier to give advice if we can see the actual brush strokes But disregarding that, my advice is to pick up a pencil or pen and do some anatomy studies, colour wise I'd up the contrast/hard shadows Try out some harder edged brushes and play around with shading and rendering, they'll give you a better feel for things in the long run as they're less forgiving.
A WIP for college (I'm a first year at the Faculty of Design now, yaaaaaaay (around 90 candidates every year, only 25 get accepted)) oh, the goal is "visceral or highly emotional reaction", but my professor had a specific view regarding what should cause that reaction (pretty much human form+gore), but it's not a big deal
Its hard to explain but I dont think your really succeeding in the visceral/ emotional responce on this. You've got the gore right but its just sort of there. Its not really in your face enough to get a big response. I'm no pro myself and I'm just hazarding a few guesses from my own small poking around that I think might help. I'm not god at exmplaining so I'll rely more on example than me trying to type out my jibberish, but basically I think what makes effective gore is proximity (having it be really in your face), and believability/simplicity. You see this a lot in movies. Action movies will have over the top gore all over the place (although you never too close to it), but a horror movie will use a few well placed very close up graphic bits of gore to put you really on edge. Some effective stuff pulled from DA, the top one I was thinking of when I started typing this, the other I found while I was trying to find a different picture I remembered (a mosquito landed on a eye, was very effective) but I cant seem to find it anymore. They both are very close up and very focused on the specific things, they are also easily relatable things. Looking at it you can imagine a needle in the tongue for example and it can make the viewer squeamish. This one for example though, Despite the proximity doesnt have much of an effect because its just too much, no one has a reference point for how that would hurt, your brain just sort of blanks it out. Thats a lot of the reason horror can be over the top, if theres too much gore it stops mattering. Effective gore (in terms of a visceral response at least, gore can be used for a lot of things), should be in the viewers face(the closer you are the harder it is to avoid gore), relatable(something you can imagine on your own body how it feels, even if not exactly this goes a longggg way), and generally in progress. Most of us don't get too squeamish looking at a slit throat in a movie but if you watch it happen (mirrors 2008) it has a lot bigger response) Hopefully that babbling helps somewhat. on your current piece it might also help if her expression was pained or something other than totally blank. As it is she looks pretty ok with her lower jaw being missing. On a semi-unrelated note her hairline is pretty far back and connects at the top of her ear which looks really weird (i cant stop staring at her massive forhead, im looking at it more than her jaw actually lol) [editline]3rd November 2013[/editline] The editor isnt working, i'll fix that second image later, should have thumbed the others too...
Charming rhenae :v:

Drew a rough fighting game screen for my personal "design a fake game for fun project" project and labeled everything including the employee who deals with drunk audience members, cause people like him are the real heroes. I'm starting to get the hang of drawing gestures. [t]http://i.imgur.com/pWSkBRc.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/ePROW77.jpg[/t] I don't really know what other fundamentals I should learn. I need to learn perspective and study up more anatomy but what else?
Value is also important, I don't know if it's recommended to learn alongside the other fundamentals or wait until later, but it's certainly on the list.

Been trying to draw from printscreens of Studio Q interviews, some more successful than others. [T]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4565878/facepunch/studio%20q.jpg[/T] Ignore the chocolate version of Commander Hadfield.

You know I guess I should've focused more on getting the outline right before I rendered it. I was probably too occupied with getting a hang of photoshop brushes.

I wanted to give it a surreal feel, as if she was a corpse, but since she's looking at the viewer it implies that she is conscious. The needle through the tongue is a very good example though as it clearly shows how much the presence of blood adds to the desired feel. But besides that, keep getting a feel for it, but definitely focus on pure brush work and leave the overlays for now.

So Vancouver is coming out with this weird RFID thing to replace paper transit tickets. The new cards have only been available so far through a BETA program so after some research and testing of various cards you can buy on ebay I spent an afternoon dicking on the SkyTrain so I could collect two new and undamaged tickets, then I glued them to either side of an RFID card, laminated it to make it durable and snipped out the corners so it looks like a real ticket. Most likely this is the first custom Compass card in existance. I'll probably have to make more to improve on little things I fucked up on like ragged edges and a nasty slip of the xacto knife.

I just got myself a tablet and there's this weird problem while drawing where the cursor turns into a regular mouse cursor so the line thickness gets fucked and the cursor jumps around everywhere. Anyone know what's up with that? BTW,I got the the Intuos Pen and Touch
I spent a good three hours with this silly pop-art thing yesterday because I'm incapable of learning keyboard shortcuts and ways to do things faster. It uses the GBC's palletes for GB games. Everything but the frame is done by hand, on a touchpad which made my wrist hurt like a bitch afterwards The white border on the last one messes it up a little, imo, I might remove it or something

My cursor stays like normal cursor (a different cursor from windows but a cursor nonetheless). No idea what's causing it to jump around everywhere but, and you might hate this suggestion, did you install your drivers correctly for the tablet? Also, wow Intuos jealous, I only have bamboo but it's been kind to me so far, not saying I draw as good as the people ITT
Pretty sure the new low-end Intuos tablets like the Pen and Touch are rebranded/slightly modified Bamboos anyway.
Yeah, the pen and touch is a terrible tablet for that price, and it is what the new Bamboo's are called. For $55 you could buy a Huion H610 which is identical to the Wacom Intuos 4 Medium tablet. For $30 more you could also buy a professional Huion P80 pen.
