Just had this critiqued today, 19x40" charcoal drawing. And did this hour long 'speed painting' in my painting class this afternoon, in oil.
Hey guys. I've recently started a dumb tumblr thing where I'm going to try and spend some time every day doing some digital drawings. My hope is to go from complete doofus in how2draw to semi-decent or passably good over the course of a year. Just looking for some kind of audience to keep me motivated/give me some kind of feedback of a sort. I don't know if this is the place to post it, but it certainly doesn't deserve its own thread. My only worry is that the drawings aren't good enough, really. Sorry if the quality of shit you find on there is not up to the usual standards I've seen browsing this thread a bit. So yeah. Thanks for reading.
Followed, I'm looking forward to seeing your progress.
Frankly I think you guys were being non-constructive dicks and could have handled it far better
was funny tho it's kinda the guy's own fault he got so butthurt over ratings and even escalated further
Just did another greyscale painting of one of my old mc worlds. From reference but not 100% accurate to the reference because I felt like experimenting a bit with how it looked. As per recommendation did some things differently to last time; Tried to reduce the equal density of detail across the picture and use larger brushes and blocks of colour (still working towards getting better at this, as I feel like I need to add in as much detail as I do to actually make it read), also started using semi-transparent brushes rather than opaque and putting more contrast in focus areas (still struggling with contrast but getting better i think). I attempted a couple of paintings working with 3 values to start, but was completely unable to get anything to read at all, so went back to approximating values. I know the perspective is a bit odd in places. Constructive criticism would be really helpful.
You guys sure have talent !

Seeing someone's art gradually improve as they learn and practice more and more. Hopefully you don't give up halfway through :v:

Otherwise youll see things that dont look right in your image because they were either a) never meant to look realistic or b) become an interpretation of something else.
Drawing symbols rather than what you see. You might be capable of drawing really well if you changed the way you did it.
I'm trying not to draw symbols. Like, I tried doing my best to draw what I saw while looking at an image. But perhaps I am. I don't know.
I'm trying not to draw symbols. Like, I tried doing my best to draw what I saw while looking at an image. But perhaps I am. You can see where it's negatively impacting your drawing especially around the eyes, where the iris is not completely round. When you use a pencil softly, you can carefully go over and get the shape as correct as you think you can. Second, drawing a semi-realistic face when you are not very experienced will typically take a couple of hours. A good book that I used when I was learning to draw was "Drawing on the right side of the brain". In that book, one of the exercises suggested exercises is drawing stuff upside-down. That means getting a photo of something you want to draw, turning it upside-down, and draw it as you see it. You don't ever draw an eye, you just draw exactly what you are looking at. Don't try and make it look correct, just draw what you are looking at. Thanks!
here's a rough portrait of my brother
You have to learn how to properly draw contours. Vary the thickness of the line based on the shadows and highlights. This will create volume.
Pacific Rim fan-art, an Icelandic Jaeger, I know they don't have swords in the movie, but why not.
It's a cool idea to think how your country's jaeger would look like by the way. Not that i didn't like that russian mecha design (even though it's pilots were just hilarious with their punk hair and stuff), but I'm pretty tempted to draw one more. It also would be cool to design pilots for it too.

The one I posted now is pretty old, I been working on a matte-painting for a while now, and it is fun trying to think up in what ways one can try and make it look more like the country you want it to represent.
i would do a new zealand one but it would probably end up just being a giant sheep-cannon with legs

[t]http://i.imgur.com/b2cdfwb.png[/t] Jesus Christ how horrifying. Well I tried making something nice for once. Here's something I made from trying to apply what I learned from drawing gestures. Sorry for the shitty quality [t]http://i.imgur.com/y75tGCL.jpg[/t]
You have to learn how to properly draw contours. Vary the thickness of the line based on the shadows and highlights.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/ZaEy87J.jpg[/img_thumb]
Mate this is really good, def your best piece yet for me The guy whose face is visible is pretty jarring, mind. Also your muddiness issues are still apparent, but in this particular case the subject matter is so muddy that it doesn't constrain the painting too much. Anyway the pose/perspective is really dynamic and the tight comp adds to the feeling I think, the insect's rendering isn't half bad either. Well done
the brazil jaeger would kick aliens like footballs or some shit
the brazil jaeger would kick aliens like footballs or some shit
More like kick nukes shaped like footballs.

Looks really good, but what's with the pink and green ghosting effect on some of the objects? (most noticeable on the bottom of the cables and the right side of the poles) Is it to make it look more photo-like?
just a bit of chromatic aberration yeh. i can always tone it down. it gives a somewhat shitty photo feel but i mainly did it to suggest some sort of aged/worn/somethingsnotquiteright feel
