So for any of you guys following my tumblr thing, I made another terrible drawing. I won't come and say this is a masterpiece (because it certainly isn't), but this is one I drew freely, without some kind of reference but my memory. It felt strange to just draw when I couldn't see specific details, just 'it was this-ish over here'. I won't say something 'clicked', but it was certainly different than the usual bullshit I've slapped on there so far. Edit: I've also been considering posting in here every time I update the tumblr, but I feel I might just be spamming with low-quality content. Any other opinions on this?
A level art teachers failed me 4 years running, I hated the course, but I had to do it to get onto my current course (Games art design) I'm so glad I went through 4 years of bullshit, because being on a proper art course actually means I get marked properly and fairly. Edit: I don't mean to sound like I dislike anyone, it's just frustrating quitting on the tablet. It feels like I'm giving up.
I'd say that you should try other methods with the tablet than laying down straight up lines, especially if you're the type to try and 'feather' the linework with short dodgy strokes when you're running full pressure, it's like drawing on paper with a permanent marker the reason you hear about feathering being a good thing to do while sketching is that it works well when you have control over the darkness, like working with a real pencil. You can run light lines all over and get a general shape, then refine it down to a thicker more defined shape where you really want it A simple excercise to do with the tablet is to not use it like a pencil- treat it like clay. Create a block of clay, rough as you like, and sculpt it into shape. Use a thicker brush to lay down rough lines or an entire shape, then carve what you want out of it using a different color or the eraser tool with the same settings [t]http://i.imgur.com/34epM4a.png[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/zZyFnTc.png[/t] even if your end result is lines, it can help you make good judgements on where you're going with an overall shape, like this awful mouse. I don't normally work with such fat lines but it gets the point across [t]http://i.imgur.com/jI9AeMx.png[/t]

I'm not sure what you mean with sculpting it out like clay, though. Could you perhaps explain a bit further?
another analogy is to build a frame that you can draw on top of- instead of thinking solely about drawing an outline first, focus more on the overall shape. Like with that mouse doodle, it was fat lines that didn't look good but it let me quickly make sure I had it about the size and shape I wanted. Once you get the framework down, it's way easier to imagine where the final lines will go, and either start a new layer to do lineart with or go straight into the sketch and erase away at the fat lines to start refining it into what I want. It still takes a ton of practice to really get it down but I personally found this roughing method to be really helpful in picking up my own stuff
So I just picked up Paint Tools SAI. It's fuckin brilliant - I'm still a crap artist though.. This example took me ages. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34938612/Drawing/Alien%20Head.png[/t] Any tips or crits?

It's definitely different. I'm going to try it out some more (Perhaps check my tumblr tomorrow, you never know~) But thanks. I'm a bit caught up in some stress lately, school projects culminating etc., so I'm easy to explode. And thanks for the method. Does anyone have tips or criticism for the head on the lower left? I think I need to do more anatomy studies and photostudies
So I did my first 30 minute session of figure drawing using this. I had it set to one minute - I know my drawings are pretty pathetic but can people give me tips and crit? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/34938612/Drawing/Untitled-1.png[/t] [editline]13th November 2013[/editline] I think my lines get harder towards the end as I was getting more frustrated with my lack of skill..
I can see you're focusing far too much on aesthetics rather than the gesture. For a beginner, 1 minute really isn't enough, like a trial by fire. I would suggest not trying to get the precise curvature of the arm muscles and such, but rather focusing on getting the basic structure right. Each was about 3 minutes long. I'm not sure you can see, but notice how I sort of compartmentalise the limbs and torso into shapes, rather than following a specific line. The key to gesture drawing is to stop caring about how it looks, because it's not going to be greek-sculpture masterpiece, that's not what it's for. It's for getting down proportions and accurately depicting the motion of the pose.
it's just frustrating quitting on the tablet. It feels like I'm giving up.
You have to start learning in the right place, or it'll take eons before you make any visible progress (and then you'll realise that you still haven't progressed to where you want to go, and you'll have to go back and start learning fundamentals and it'll be just as frustrating.) Believe me you're doing the right thing. I wouldn't bother documenting all this shite either, you will be terrible for a while. Spend your time working studiously rather than writing blog posts about single drawings you aren't even proud of. You'll get through the shitty beginning phase quicker
